You can reduce unnecessary memory pressure without shutting down apps you need: first find out whether memory is actually the bottleneck, then limit unneeded startup and background activity. Use Task Manager to check memory alongside CPU and disk, because a slow PC is not always short on RAM.
Check what is using resources before changing settings
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes page, review the Memory column to see which running processes are using the most RAM. Then open Performance and select Memory for the system-wide picture. Check CPU and Disk there too: Microsoft notes that monitoring all three can help identify processes slowing the PC (Tips to improve PC performance in Windows).

High memory use by itself does not prove there is a problem. Identify whether memory is under pressure and whether a particular process stands out before changing settings. If CPU or disk activity is unusually high instead, reducing startup apps may not address the cause.

- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

- In Task Manager, select Startup apps.
- Review the list and select an app you do not need to start automatically.
- Choose Disable. Leave apps enabled when you rely on them immediately after sign-in.
You can also use Settings > Apps > Startup. Task Manager’s startup impact label describes an app’s effect on startup, not its current memory use; use the Processes page for current usage. Microsoft documents these startup controls in its Windows performance guidance.
Limit background activity selectively
Some apps can run in the background when you are not actively using them. Restricting an app may reduce its background activity, but it can also stop or delay notifications, syncing, or other services you depend on. The control is not available for every app.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, select its menu, and choose Advanced options if available.
- Under Background app permissions, choose Never only if the app does not need to run in the background.
Keep background permission enabled for apps whose timely syncing or notifications matter to you. Microsoft describes this setting in its performance guidance.

Microsoft’s Runtime Broker support article explains that Runtime Broker manages permissions for Microsoft Store apps and that a problematic app can cause unusually high use. That page is marked for Windows 10; its specific threshold and troubleshooting steps should not be treated as a universal Windows 11 rule.
Use clean boot troubleshooting only to isolate a conflict
If you suspect a startup app or service is interfering with performance, a clean boot can help determine whether background software is involved. It is a diagnostic procedure, not a routine way to clear memory. Microsoft warns that network policies may restrict the steps and that functionality may be temporarily unavailable during troubleshooting.

Consider more RAM only after checking the device
More RAM can help a PC handle more simultaneous work, but whether an upgrade is possible depends on the computer’s design. Microsoft gives broad workload guidance: at least 4 GB for mainly browsing, documents, or streaming video; 8 GB recommended for long-term use; and 16 GB or more as a possible fit for photo or video editing and other high-performance projects (All about computer memory). These are general recommendations, not a diagnosis or a promise that a specific upgrade will resolve slowdowns.

Before buying memory, check the exact PC model, supported memory type and maximum capacity, and whether its memory can be serviced or upgraded. Microsoft notes that some PCs with less than 4 GB may have upgrade options, but that does not mean every such PC is upgradeable (How much memory does my computer have?). If the PC is managed by an organization, ask its administrator before changing settings that may be controlled by policy.
