How to Fix Smart Bulbs That Keep Disconnecting or Going Offline

An offline smart bulb may have lost power, signal, or network access—not failed. Follow these checks in order, with brand-specific guidance for WiZ and Kasa.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a smart bulb appears offline, first make sure it still has power, refresh the app, and check the Wi-Fi signal where the bulb is installed. Then restart the bulb and router, verify the bulb’s network credentials and band requirements, and investigate router settings only if simpler checks fail. An offline status does not by itself mean the bulb is broken.

1. Check the bulb’s power and the app status

Confirm the wall switch is on and the fixture is supplying power. A smart bulb that has been switched off at the wall cannot stay connected for app control. If the bulb is lit but the app says it is offline, force-close and reopen the app to refresh its status.

For WiZ lights, a firmware update can briefly interrupt the connection to WiZ’s server. Wait a few minutes for the bulb to reconnect before taking further action. WiZ explains that its Wi-Fi lights can appear offline when the network fails or cannot connect to them: WiZ support: “My light appears ‘offline’ in the app. What should I do?”

2. Power-cycle the bulb once

If it remains offline after the wait, switch the bulb off, wait five seconds, then switch it back on. WiZ lists this as a reconnection step. Avoid starting with a factory reset: that can mean setting up the bulb again, while a changed Wi-Fi password generally calls for re-pairing rather than an indiscriminate reset.

3. Check Wi-Fi coverage at the lamp

A bulb may be in a weak-signal spot even when phones elsewhere in the home work normally. Check the manufacturer app or router’s connected-device list for signal information, if available. In Kasa, the path is device card > Device Settings > Device Info > Wi-Fi icon. TP-Link’s Kasa guidance rates RSSI above -50 dBm as strong, between -70 dBm and -50 dBm as good to average, and below -70 dBm as poor; the company says weak signal can cause disconnections. These are Kasa troubleshooting thresholds, not universal guarantees for every bulb. See TP-Link Kasa offline troubleshooting.

Move the bulb or router, if practical, to improve coverage. WiZ also advises checking that the bulb is within Wi-Fi range, particularly if it has been moved. Consider an extender only if a weak spot is confirmed and moving existing equipment is impractical; the cited manufacturer guidance does not specifically recommend buying one.

4. Verify the Wi-Fi band and network credentials

WiZ bulbs

WiZ says its lights use 2.4 GHz b/g/n Wi-Fi, and the phone must be connected to the 2.4 GHz network during pairing. If the router uses one network name for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, temporarily separating the names can help you identify and select the 2.4 GHz network. If the Wi-Fi name or password changed, run the WiZ pairing procedure again so the bulb receives the current credentials. Follow the instructions for your model in WiZ’s support guide.

Kasa bulbs

For Kasa setup problems, TP-Link suggests WPA2+AES security, 20 MHz channel width, and Wi-Fi channels 1, 6, or 11; it also suggests separating the 5 GHz network name or temporarily turning off 5 GHz when needed. These are Kasa-specific setup suggestions, not settings to apply blindly to other brands or models. Check your router instructions and the bulb’s support page before changing them. See TP-Link Kasa setup troubleshooting.

5. Restart the router and check for updates

For recurring Kasa disconnects, TP-Link’s recommended sequence includes restarting the router and device, checking the bulb’s firmware, and updating the Kasa app. Outdated device firmware or app software can contribute to offline behavior. Use the update controls in the maker’s app and allow any update to finish before power-cycling the bulb.

6. Investigate router settings if multiple devices are affected

If several bulbs or other Wi-Fi devices drop at once, or the bulb becomes stable on another network, the router may be involved. TP-Link suggests trying a different 2.4 GHz network or hotspot as a diagnostic; stability there points toward settings on the primary router. For Kasa, settings to investigate include Band Steering (also called Smart Connect or Whole-Home Wi-Fi), Wi-Fi optimization, and channel optimization. Change settings one at a time and consult the router’s documentation.

WiZ notes that router capacity can matter when many devices are connected, and its pairing guide identifies DHCP failure or no available address as possible pairing problems. These are clues rather than proof of a capacity issue. Check the router’s device/client list and address status if multiple devices fail or the pairing process reports an address error. WiZ also suggests checking UDP broadcast only when its in-app network test reports a UDP error; it is not a routine setting to change.

7. Re-pair the bulb or contact its maker

Re-pair when network credentials have changed or when the manufacturer’s troubleshooting steps call for it. Use the bulb’s brand- and model-specific procedure; reset and pairing methods differ. If WiZ lights still will not reconnect, WiZ directs users to its in-app support chat.

For persistent Kasa failures, contact TP-Link support and have these details ready:

  • The bulb’s model, LED state, and MAC address.
  • The router model and relevant network setup.
  • Whether the bulb is reachable on the local network when it appears offline.
  • How often the disconnection happens and whether it resolves on its own.
  • The email address associated with the TP-Link account.

TP-Link’s troubleshooting steps and support guidance are at its Kasa offline support page.

Do not assume every smart bulb connects the same way

The WiZ and Kasa guidance above concerns Wi-Fi products. Philips Hue’s setup page describes bulbs connected through a Hue Bridge or Bridge Pro plugged into the router, as well as newer wireless bridge alternatives. For a bridge-based system, the bulb’s connection path includes that bridge, so Wi-Fi checks for a direct-to-router bulb may not apply in the same way. Compare the system’s connection architecture, coverage, app diagnostics, and band requirements rather than assuming one ecosystem is categorically more reliable; the cited sources do not establish a head-to-head reliability winner. See Philips Hue: how the system connects.
