Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo reduce delay on an encoder-based YouTube stream, open YouTube Studio’s stream settings and choose the latency mode that fits how quickly you need to interact: Normal for one-way events, Low for limited interaction, or Ultra-low for real-time conversation. Lower modes reduce the time viewers wait, but leave less buffer and increase the risk of playback interruptions. Upload capacity, network stability, encoder settings, and ingestion protocol also affect the result.
Choose a latency mode that fits the event
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between a camera capturing an event and viewers seeing it. For encoder-based streams, select the mode in YouTube Studio’s stream settings. The time estimates below are YouTube’s approximate descriptions of viewer experience, not guarantees for every viewer or stream.

| Mode | Best fit | Typical viewer experience | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | One-way events where immediate audience responses are not needed | YouTube describes this as the option with the lowest amount of viewer buffering. | Supports all resolutions and live features. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls that do not need an immediate response | Most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency, according to YouTube. | More buffering risk than Normal; does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low | Live conversation and real-time engagement | Most viewers experience less than five seconds of latency, according to YouTube. | Higher buffering risk; does not support 4K; viewers are more affected by ingestion problems. |
Choose the lowest mode that serves the event rather than assuming the lowest delay is always best. A lecture, performance, or announcement may benefit more from reliable playback than from a faster chat response. For a Q&A or interactive discussion, a shorter delay can make exchanges feel more natural, provided the connection is stable.
YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are always set up for interactivity, so creators using those stream types cannot choose a latency mode. The mode choice applies to encoder-based streams.

Set the encoder bitrate and keyframes correctly
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec; a single bitrate is not right for every setup. The following are YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates for selected configurations. They are platform recommendations, not independent measurements.
| Codec | Resolution and frame rate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| H.264 | 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 720p at 60 fps or 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings page rather than extrapolating these examples. YouTube recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. For 4K, use Normal latency: YouTube’s encoder guidance says 4K streams use Normal, and Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K.

See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table and other settings. These recommendations can change, so check the page when configuring a new stream.
Give the stream enough stable upload bandwidth
Check outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends testing your connection, ensuring upload capacity can handle the total stream bitrate, and leaving about 20% headroom. For example, a stream running at 10 Mbps needs more than 10 Mbps of available upload capacity to preserve that recommended margin. The connection may be shared with other devices and applications, so their traffic can reduce what is available to the encoder.

- Run a speed test from the same network and, where possible, the same location the encoder will use.
- Pause large uploads, cloud backups, downloads, and other high-bandwidth activity during the event.
- Prefer a reliable connection. A wired connection may be practical where available, but using Ethernet alone does not guarantee lower latency.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and encoder messages during the broadcast; average upload speed can look adequate even when congestion or disruptions cause delay.
YouTube notes that network congestion and other factors can add delay even when a connection can sustain the stream’s average bitrate. A speed-test result is therefore a useful check, not a guarantee.

Check whether your ingestion protocol adds delay
YouTube says HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP because HLS sends video in segments rather than continuously. Ultra-low latency is disabled when using HLS. If you use HLS, YouTube supports segment durations from one to four seconds; shorter segments result in lower latency within HLS, but the protocol still has its own latency characteristics. Check the requirements of your encoder and stream setup before changing protocols.

Test before going live and monitor the event
- Set the mode and encoder. In YouTube Studio, configure the encoder-based stream’s latency mode, then set resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current guidance.
- Test the actual network. Use the connection and equipment planned for the event, with other household or office network activity representative of event conditions.
- Include representative content. Test with audio and motion similar to the broadcast; a static screen is not a useful test of the planned workload.
- Preview and inspect stream health. Confirm the preview appears as expected and watch for encoder or network warnings before the event begins.
- Monitor during the stream. Keep an eye on stream health and messages, and be ready to reduce the bitrate or move to a more stable setup if the upload connection cannot sustain the chosen configuration.
YouTube’s setup and streaming guidance recommends testing and monitoring rather than relying on settings alone. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot delay, buffering, and mode limits
- Viewers report buffering after switching to Low or Ultra-low: Those modes use less read-ahead buffer. If the connection or viewer playback is unstable, switch to Normal or improve network stability and retest.
- Ultra-low is unavailable: Check whether the stream uses HLS; YouTube disables Ultra-low for HLS ingestion.
- You need 4K: Choose Normal latency. Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K on YouTube.
- Delay remains high despite selecting a lower mode: Check upload congestion, encoder health, bitrate, and ingestion protocol. The latency mode is only one contributor to end-to-end delay.
- The stream works in a test but degrades during the event: Check for shared network usage or disruptions and compare the live encoder’s health messages with the pre-event test.
Or let it run in the cloud
