The best dynamic microphone for streaming depends first on how you want to connect it: USB models plug straight into a computer, XLR models need an audio interface or mixer and a cable, and a few support both. The seven microphones below offer different connection paths and documented features, but manufacturer specifications alone do not establish which sounds best with your voice, room, and setup.
How to choose a dynamic microphone for streaming
Choose USB, XLR, or both
- USB: Connects directly to a computer, so you do not need an interface as the bridge to your computer. The Audio-Technica AT2040USB is a USB option.
- XLR: Requires an XLR cable and an interface or mixer to connect to a computer. The Shure MV7X, Shure SM7B, Elgato Wave DX, and RØDE PodMic use XLR.
- USB and XLR: Offers both connection paths. The RØDE PodMic USB and Shure MV7 document USB and XLR connections.
For an XLR setup, account for the interface or mixer, cable, and a compatible stand or boom arm as needed. If you choose USB, check the included cable and mounting hardware rather than assuming they come in the box.

Read the pickup pattern as a specification, not a promise
These manufacturers describe the microphones as cardioid or hypercardioid. Those labels identify pickup patterns; they do not establish how much room noise a microphone will reject in your particular space. Placement, distance, room acoustics, and voice all matter, and the available specifications do not provide a controlled comparison between these models.

Which setup fits your streaming desk?
Pick USB for a direct computer connection
The AT2040USB connects over USB-C and documents headphone monitoring, mix control, and a low-cut control. The PodMic USB also offers USB, alongside XLR. Choose based on the documented connection and features you need, then check the manufacturer’s current package details for included cables and mounts.

Pick XLR if you already have the supporting gear
The MV7X, SM7B, Wave DX, and PodMic are XLR options. An XLR microphone does not connect to a computer by itself: allow for the cable and an interface or mixer. The Wave DX explicitly requires a separate interface, cable, and stand or boom arm; the PodMic’s RØDE FAQ likewise describes an XLR cable and interface as the bridge to a computer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPick dual connection if flexibility matters
The PodMic USB and MV7 document USB and XLR routes. That gives you connection options, but does not by itself prove one model sounds better or that every feature works identically over both paths. Check the current manufacturer guide for the details that matter to your planned setup.

The heavy-duty boom arm maintains distance from your desktop, preventing noise interference, resulting in smoother, clearer vocals during voice-over and streams. (For optimal input volume, adjust input volume via the mic's gain knob in USB connection, or control on your audio interface when XLR connection.)
How do I connect the microphone to my computer?
For a USB microphone
- Check the manufacturer’s connection instructions and use the specified USB port and cable. For the AT2040USB, the datasheet lists a USB cable and the microphone has a USB-C output.
- Connect the microphone to the computer and select it as the input device in your operating system and streaming or recording software.
- If the model provides headphone monitoring or onboard controls, set those for your workflow. AT2040USB documents headphone monitoring, mix control, and low-cut control.
- Make a test recording or private stream and confirm that the software is receiving the microphone signal before going live.
For an XLR microphone
- Connect the microphone’s XLR output to an XLR cable, then connect that cable to an audio interface or mixer. The interface or mixer provides the bridge to the computer.
- Connect the interface or mixer to the computer and select its input in your operating system and streaming or recording software.
- Set input gain on the interface or mixer while speaking at your normal streaming level. The manufacturer figures in the table are not a tested gain recommendation for every interface.
- Monitor a test recording or private stream and adjust the input level if the voice is too quiet, distorted, or clipping.
For a microphone with both outputs
Use either the documented USB route or the XLR route through an interface or mixer. Follow the current model guide for its connection-specific setup; do not assume that the two paths share controls or behave identically.
How close should you be, and what accessories are needed?
Elgato’s Wave DX page includes the question “How close should I be to the microphone?” but the cited prompt alone does not establish a single recommended distance. Start with a comfortable, consistent speaking position, then listen to a recording and adjust distance and level for your room and voice.

- Pop protection: RØDE says the PodMic has a built-in pop filter and does not need an added windshield. The MV7X specification sheet lists a windscreen. For other models, confirm included protection on the current product page rather than assuming it comes in the box.
- Cable and interface: Confirm whether the cable, interface, and any stand are included. Wave DX explicitly does not include its XLR cable or interface.
What the specifications can—and cannot—tell you
The manufacturer materials establish the listed connection types, pickup patterns, and figures. They do not establish comparative listening results under matched room, voice, placement, and gain conditions. Nor do they establish current retail prices, stock, or Amazon listing availability. Use specifications to check setup fit; if sound quality is your deciding factor, seek a return policy and evaluate the microphone with your own voice and room.

Common setup problems and fixes
- The computer does not show an XLR microphone as an input: An XLR microphone needs an interface or mixer connected to the computer. Connect the microphone to that device, then select the interface input in the computer and streaming software.
- The microphone is connected but software receives no signal: Check that the intended input is selected in both the operating system and the streaming or recording app, and verify the cable and interface connections.
- The voice is too quiet or distorted: Recheck input gain and speak at your normal distance and level. Sensitivity and output figures are not universal gain settings; the right adjustment depends on the interface and setup.
- The microphone does not fit the arm or stand: Check the thread and mount dimensions and use the included adapter where applicable. Wave DX includes specified thread adapters; Shure says an adapter may be needed for some MV7 stands.
- Plosives or wind noise are distracting: Check whether the selected microphone has included pop protection, adjust your speaking position, and add compatible protection if needed. RØDE says PodMic’s built-in pop filter removes the need for a separate windshield.
