Reduce light pollution without giving up useful security lighting by working in this order: remove lights with no clear purpose, shield and aim those you keep, lower their output, limit when they operate, and choose a warmer color where practical. The goal is to light the entry, path, or other target—not to make the whole property as bright as possible.
1. Decide whether the light is needed
Start by asking what each outdoor security light is meant to illuminate. If it serves no clear purpose, switch it off or remove it. DarkSky and the Illuminating Engineering Society put that principle first: “All light should have a clear purpose.” DarkSky’s Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting also emphasize targeting light, using only the level needed, controlling its use, and choosing warm colors.

Lighting at night can contribute to increased sky brightness and ecological disruption, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s overview of light at night. The appropriate balance depends on the purpose and setting; reducing spill does not require leaving a needed entrance or work area unlit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Shield and aim the fixture before changing the bulb
Light should reach the specific area you need—not shine into a neighbor’s windows, across the property line, or upward into the sky. Use a fully shielded fixture and aim its beam downward. DarkSky’s home assessment recommends a fixture that directs light downward, no higher than 80 degrees from the nadir. Its home outdoor-lighting assessment is practical guidance, not a universal building code or security-lighting standard.

- Reduced glare from lamp source provides comfortable illumination
- ONLY SUITABLE with following GKOLED models: 7W and 12W low voltage LED Flood Lights
- NOT SUITABLE with GKOLED Line voltage model: 15W, 30W and 45W LED Flood lights.
- Mount directly to fixture hood. held in place by locking screw (provided). Suitable for wet/damp/dry location installations
- Help prevent wind, water, and moving branches from damaging the flood light fixture
A bulb swap alone will not fix a bare or poorly aimed fixture: light can still spill in unwanted directions. For an existing light, consider compatible retrofit shielding or a replacement fixture designed to direct the beam downward. Check that any shield fits the fixture and does not interfere with its operation.
3. Use the lowest output that does the job
Choose output for the task and site, rather than assuming brighter means safer or more effective. DarkSky’s home assessment suggests keeping total output below 1,000 lumens. For context, it gives 300–800 lumens as a typical range for work areas outside a garage and 300 lumens or less for pathways. These are recommendations and examples, not universal limits; the right level depends on what you need to see and how the light is aimed.

- High-quality materials:Made of high-quality plastic composite materials, durable. It can continuously reduce the aging damage caused by sunlight and rain to the camera, provide safe and reliable protection for the camera for a long time, and make the service life of the camera longer.
- Unique design:Suitable for most bullets and dome security cameras, Covering the entire bracket and camera can better protect all parts of the camera. Its overall dimensions:8.46" x 7.25" x 4.4"cm (LxWxH); And its inside size is about 8" x 5.5" x 3.43"(LxWxH), Please check the inside size for installation.
- Strong protection:The drainage design of the waterproof and rainproof cover will drain the rainwater from the built-in rainwater channel prevent rain from entering the camera and reduce the heat generated by sunlight on the camera, because overheating will affect the service life and normal operation of the camera.
- Reduce glare:The hood can prevent dust from accumulating on the camera and prevent strong wind from damaging the camera and reduce the glare caused by sunlight and street lights on the camera and make the camera have better visual effect.
- Simple installation:Positioning, drilling, screwing in, and installing the camera cover is complete. The upper part of the camera protective cover also relates to a drilling free wall drilling design, which can be hung on the camera with a rope.
If the fixture takes a replaceable bulb, a compatible lower-output bulb may help. Verify the bulb type and the fixture’s rating before replacing it. If the fixture itself emits too much light or distributes it poorly, a new bulb may not be enough.

Use a motion sensor, timer, dimmer, or manual switch to avoid leaving a security light at full brightness all night. DarkSky recommends controls that make light available when needed, dim it when possible, and turn it off when it is not needed. A motion sensor can provide light on approach; a timer or switch can suit a predictable schedule. Choose a control compatible with the fixture and wiring, and set it so the target area is lit when required.

5. Choose a warmer color where feasible
For residential outdoor lighting, DarkSky’s home assessment recommends a warm or amber color temperature of 2700 K or lower. If you choose a bulb above 2700 K, it advises careful shielding, aiming, and control. Color temperature is one part of the decision: a warm bulb in an unshielded fixture can still cause glare and spill.
DarkSky’s Approved Luminaires program has separate criteria for residential luminaires. Version 3.1, updated October 2025, sets a maximum total output of 1,000 lumens, no more than 50 lumens between 90 and 180 degrees above nadir, nominal CCT no higher than 3000 K, and dimmability to 10% or less, subject to stated exclusions. These are program criteria, not the same thing as the more conservative 2700 K home-assessment recommendation or a general legal standard. See the DarkSky Approved Luminaires guidelines for the program details.

Retrofit or replace? What to compare
When deciding whether to improve an existing light or install a different one, compare the fixture’s light direction and the compatibility of any changes. A fully shielded motion-sensor light is a straightforward replacement category to consider; no particular brand or model is established here. A warm outdoor LED bulb is relevant only if it fits the fixture and the fixture provides suitable shielding and aiming.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Retrofit or replacement | A compatible shield, bulb, or control may improve an existing fixture; replacement may be necessary if the fixture cannot direct light appropriately. |
| Shielding and beam direction | Look for a fully shielded fixture that directs light down onto the target area. |
| Lumen output | Choose the lowest output that meets the task; DarkSky’s home-assessment examples are guidance, not universal limits. |
| Color temperature | DarkSky’s home assessment recommends 2700 K or lower; the Approved Luminaires program allows nominal CCT up to 3000 K under its criteria. |
| Controls | Check whether a motion sensor, timer, dimmer, or switch suits your needs and is compatible with the fixture. |
| Fixture and wiring compatibility | Confirm ratings and installation requirements before adding a bulb, shield, or control. |
| Local rules | Check your jurisdiction’s requirements before replacing or modifying outdoor lighting. IES does not endorse or provide specific guidance for lighting ordinances; its position statement advises consulting the local jurisdiction. |

If you rent, ask for targeted changes
Ask the property owner or manager whether they can aim or shield the light, use a lower-output compatible bulb, or add an appropriate control. DarkSky’s guide, What renters can do about light pollution, offers renter-focused suggestions. Avoid modifying a fixture or its wiring without permission and confirmation that the change is safe and allowed.
Check local requirements before making changes
Outdoor-lighting rules vary by jurisdiction. Confirm local requirements and fixture or electrical compatibility before replacing equipment or adding controls. The Illuminating Engineering Society’s June 17, 2024 position statement says IES does not endorse or provide specific guidance for lighting ordinances, so consult your local jurisdiction for applicable rules. The U.S. Department of Energy also describes the need to balance lighting purposes and impacts in its overview of the Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting.
