Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo reduce input lag with a wireless gaming controller, first update its firmware, then compare wireless play with a supported wired USB connection. If the delay remains, check wireless signal quality, game and system performance, and display settings. Input lag is the full button-to-screen chain, so changing the controller connection will not help if the delay originates elsewhere.
What input lag includes
The delay you feel between pressing a button and seeing the result can involve several stages: the controller registering the input, sending it to the host, the game and system processing it, the game rendering a frame, and the display showing that frame. The controller’s wireless link is only one possible source.
Microsoft’s Xbox team describes wired input on Xbox as transmitting a digital state change as soon as it changes. That explains a design approach, not a measured promise that wired play will always reduce total latency on every controller, console, or PC. The available manufacturer sources do not establish a universal number of milliseconds saved by switching connection modes.
Work through these checks in order
1. Record your current setup
Before changing anything, note the exact controller model, host device, connection mode, firmware version, game, and display. Also identify whether the delay affects buttons, sticks, or both. Keep this information handy: model-specific support and connection features can vary, and there are no universal menu paths for all platforms.

- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
2. Update the controller firmware
Use the manufacturer’s official update tool or instructions for your exact model. Firmware can add or improve features, but an update is not a general guarantee of lower latency.
For example, Microsoft announced in September 2021 that an update for specified Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controllers, Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and Xbox Adaptive Controllers brought features previously available on Xbox Series X|S controllers, including Dynamic Latency Input. Microsoft described that feature as delivering controller inputs more efficiently to an Xbox Series X|S console. This is a specific, dated example; it does not show that an update will reduce lag on every controller or platform. Read Microsoft’s announcement.

3. Compare wireless with wired USB, if your controller supports it
- Find a USB cable that fits the controller and supports data, not just charging. Check the controller manual if you are unsure whether wired input is supported.
- Keep the host, game, display, and settings unchanged. Switch only the controller connection.
- Compare the same actions in the same situation. If you measure rather than rely on feel, use a consistent method and note its limitations.
If wired play feels more responsive, the wireless connection may be contributing to the delay. If there is no meaningful difference, investigate the game, host, or display next. A wired comparison is diagnostic: it does not prove that a particular connection mode is universally faster. Microsoft’s Xbox latency explanation discusses the wired design in the context of Xbox, not as a cross-platform latency test. Read the Xbox latency explainer.
4. Check wireless signal quality
For Bluetooth, test at your normal playing distance. Where practical, keep the controller oriented toward the host, reduce obvious obstructions, and temporarily limit nearby wireless activity to see whether the connection feels more reliable.

SCUF’s support FAQ says Microsoft does not publish an official wireless-latency figure for the referenced Xbox-based SCUF Instinct. It also notes that a weaker Bluetooth signal at greater distance may reduce performance or cause a disconnection. That is a reliability warning, not a precise latency measurement or a promise that moving a receiver will produce a specific improvement. Read the SCUF Instinct FAQ.
5. Verify the connection mode and host support
Some controllers offer Bluetooth, a dedicated 2.4 GHz receiver, and USB, but supported features and performance figures may differ by mode and host. Check the controller manual, confirm which connection is active, and make sure the host recognizes the intended input protocol.

Do not treat polling rate as button-to-screen latency. Polling rate describes how often a device reports input; the game, system, frame rate, and display still affect when that input appears on screen. For example, ASUS advertises up to 1000 Hz over wired USB-C or 2.4 GHz in PC/ROG Ally mode for the ROG Raikiri II, and 250 Hz on Xbox consoles. These are manufacturer specifications for that controller, not independent test results or a guarantee of a particular response time. See the ROG Raikiri II specifications. For a broader explanation of polling rate, see SCUF’s polling-rate guide.

Setting names and availability vary by display, game, and platform. SCUF also identifies display refresh and game responsiveness as relevant factors, and notes that console polling behavior is largely managed by the system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the comparison
A useful test changes one variable at a time. For a meaningful connection-mode comparison, keep the controller, host, firmware, game, and display the same. Distinguish button response from stick response, and do not mistake a polling-rate figure for total input latency. If using measurements, record the method, sample, and variability; the manufacturer specifications cited above are not controlled, cross-platform comparisons.
Wired, Bluetooth, and dedicated 2.4 GHz connections also differ in reliability, range, battery needs, convenience, compatibility, and supported features. The sources available here do not establish a universally fastest mode across all controllers and platforms.
