How to Compare Travel Credit Cards by Annual Fee, Points Value, and Benefits

Compare travel cards by estimating what each will cost you after benefits you will actually use, then calculating rewards from your spending and a realistic redemption. Points do not have a universal cash value, and a card’s advertised credits or perks are not automatically worth their face value to you. Use the framework below to compare a shortlist on the same assumptions, and verify each card’s current terms before deciding.

Build a like-for-like comparison

Choose the cards you are genuinely considering and assess them against your own annual spending, travel habits, and likely redemptions. Record the date you checked each term. Keep confirmed issuer terms separate from your estimates so that a changing offer or assumption does not look like a guaranteed benefit.

What to compare What to record
Annual fee and net cost Current fee, less only the value of benefits you expect to use under their actual conditions.
Ongoing rewards Earn rates, categories, caps, exclusions, and rewards estimated from your own yearly spending.
Points or miles value A plausible redemption, including the cash price, points required, taxes or fees, availability, and transfer steps.
Bonus and eligibility Bonus amount, spending threshold, timing, and any eligibility rules that could prevent you from receiving it.
Benefits and restrictions Enrollment, booking channel, frequency, covered travelers, exclusions, and claim process.
Terms and dependencies Current issuer terms, rewards rules, benefit guide, and reliance on airline, hotel, or other partner programs.

Do not rank cards by advertised headline value alone. The comparison is useful only if the same spending and redemption assumptions are applied to each card.

Is a travel card’s annual fee worth it?

Start with the card’s current annual fee, then subtract only benefits that replace spending you would otherwise make and that you can realistically claim. A travel credit is not worth its full face amount if it requires a purchase you would not make, applies only through a particular booking channel, or has conditions you are unlikely to meet. Likewise, lounge access or hotel status may be valuable to a frequent traveler but little or no value to someone who will not use it.

A simple personal estimate is: annual fee minus the value of usable benefits. Keep this separate from rewards earned through spending, and avoid counting the same benefit twice. This is a planning estimate, not a guarantee of what the card will return.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reported that the average annual fee amount increased 21% from 2022 to 2025, from $105 to $127. That is market-level historical context, not a current quote for any particular card. The CFPB links premium cards’ higher rewards rates and ancillary benefits to this market context: CFPB 2025 credit card market report.

How much are travel points worth?

There is no single guaranteed cents-per-point value that applies across cards, programs, and trips. To estimate a value that matters to you, choose a redemption you would actually make and compare its cash price with the points or miles required. Account for taxes, fees, availability, and any steps or restrictions involved in transferring rewards to a partner.

  1. Choose a realistic trip or redemption. Use dates, route, lodging, and travel style you might actually book.
  2. Find the cash alternative. Record the cash price you would be willing to pay, not simply the highest listed price.
  3. Record the reward cost and extra charges. Include points or miles needed, taxes and fees, transfer requirements, and whether award space is available.
  4. State the assumptions and date. Label the result as a cash-equivalent redemption or an estimate for a particular award, and note when you checked it.

A favorable partner-transfer example is not a value every cardholder can obtain. Travel prices change, and rewards programs may change redemption rates, so a value estimate is tied to its specific redemption and date. The CFPB discusses this risk in its circular on rewards practices.

Calculate rewards from your real spending

Estimate ordinary rewards from your own likely yearly purchases rather than a generic household profile. For each card, note the base earn rate and bonus categories, then check whether a category has a cap, excludes certain transactions, or requires a particular payment method. A high rate in a category where you spend little may matter less than a modest rate on purchases you make regularly.

Keep introductory bonuses separate from ongoing rewards. Record the bonus eligibility rules, spending threshold, deadline or timing conditions, and whether you expect to meet the threshold through purchases you would make anyway. Do not treat a bonus as recurring annual value unless the program’s terms establish that it recurs.

The CFPB describes common rewards structures, including spending-based earning, promotional bonuses, and transfers to co-brand or merchant partners, in its rewards-practices circular.

Check whether benefits are usable in practice

For each benefit you care about, read the conditions rather than treating its label as cash. Check whether you must enroll, book through a specified channel, use the benefit by a deadline, or pay with the card. Confirm who is covered, how often the benefit applies, what is excluded, and how to make a claim. These details can decide whether a listed perk has practical value for you.

The CFPB has described consumer complaints involving unexpected promotional conditions, reward devaluation, redemption obstacles, and revoked rewards. Its report also warns that unclear or buried conditions can prevent consumers from receiving rewards they expected. See the CFPB market report and its circular on rewards practices.

Verify current terms before choosing

Use the issuer’s current pricing information, cardholder agreement, rewards-program rules, and benefit guide as the decisive sources for a specific card. The CFPB’s agreement database contains filed agreements with general terms, pricing, and fee information; its resource page describes agreements from more than 600 issuers: CFPB credit card agreements.

The CFPB publishes its Terms of Credit Card Plans survey twice a year and lists a July 1–December 31, 2025 dataset. It has retired its interactive Explore Credit Cards comparison tool, saying it lacks timely source data for consumers’ comparison needs. Public data can provide context, but it should not replace checking an issuer’s live terms. See CFPB credit card data.

On your comparison sheet, mark which details are confirmed and which are estimates, and write down the date checked. That makes it easier to revisit volatile fees, bonuses, earning rules, transfer terms, and benefits before applying.
