To reduce display-side input lag, select the TV input your console uses, turn on that input’s Game mode or equivalent, and switch off motion interpolation if you still notice delay. For an older console with analog video, use a scaler compatible with its output and your TV. These changes can help, but the full response time depends on the console, any converter, the display and their settings—not the TV alone.
What input lag means for a retro setup
Input lag is the time it takes a display to show a signal after the source sends it, as RTINGS defines it in its TV testing methodology. In play, however, the delay from pressing a button to seeing the result can include the controller, console, video converter or scaler, and TV. A TV-side measurement does not describe that entire chain.

Start by identifying how the console sends video. Its output might be composite, S-Video, component or SCART RGB. Check the console’s actual output and the adapter or scaler’s supported inputs before connecting it to an HDTV. The RetroTINK-5X Pro manual, for example, documents those analog input families and digital output; it is one product example, not a universal recommendation.
Enable the TV’s low-latency picture mode
Choose the input the console is connected to, then enable Game mode, Game Optimizer or the equivalent low-latency setting for that TV. This is usually the most important TV-side adjustment because it can reduce processing that delays the picture. Names, menus and behavior vary by model; consult the model’s instructions rather than assuming one brand-wide path. Sony’s support instructions and LG’s Game Optimizer guide illustrate model-dependent controls.

Some picture options may be unavailable while Game mode is active; that can be intentional. Compare how the game responds with the mode on, using the same console, input and other settings so you can tell whether the change helped.
Turn off processing that can add delay
If controls still feel delayed, try disabling motion interpolation—the feature that generates intermediate frames to make motion look smoother—and other demanding picture processing. RTINGS notes that demanding processing can increase input lag; brightness controls generally do not. Change one option at a time and compare, since the available settings and their effects depend on the TV.

Check whether ALLM actually engaged
Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) lets compatible HDMI equipment request a display’s low-latency mode. The feature requires compatible devices and may depend on the TV model or input. LG describes its model-dependent setting in this ALLM and Game Optimizer guide; Sony explains the source-triggered switching in its ALLM support article.
Do not assume ALLM switched modes just because it is enabled. An older analog console, or a converter between it and the TV, may not provide the HDMI signaling the TV expects. Check the TV’s picture or game menu to confirm its low-latency mode is active; if not, enable Game mode manually.

Choose a scaler mode that works with both console and TV
A scaler can convert a console’s analog video for an HDTV. It may also have processing or buffering of its own, so “use a scaler” does not mean the whole setup has no lag. Choose a mode that is compatible with the display and works reliably; the lowest-buffer option is not useful if it produces an unstable picture or fails to work with the TV.
For the RetroTINK-5X Pro specifically, its manual lists approximately 0.25 frames of lag in Frame Lock and approximately 0.25 to 1.25 frames in Triple Buffer. The manual says Frame Lock can be incompatible with some TVs or capture cards; Triple Buffer improves compatibility but may add lag and occasional judder. These are scaler-mode specifications, not end-to-end console-to-screen figures. RetroTINK’s 2021 announcement describes Triple Buffer more simply as adding one frame; the manual’s approximate range is the more precise figure for comparing modes. Its claim that the 5X Pro’s motion-adaptive deinterlacer adds no lag is also a manufacturer claim about that feature, not a measurement of the complete setup.

Compare TVs using relevant input-lag measurements
If you are evaluating a TV, look for measurements at the resolution and refresh rate relevant to the console, and check whether they were taken with Game mode enabled. RTINGS publishes results across signal formats and settings, including results outside Game mode and with interpolation. Its 2025 guidance calls less than 15 ms a “Good value” for 1080p at 60 Hz; that is a testing benchmark, not a universal comfort threshold. RTINGS also says the minimum for a 60 Hz TV is 8.33 ms, the refresh-cycle lower bound in its methodology—not a promise of total system latency. Measurements for a different format or processing configuration may not predict your setup, and TV tests exclude other contributors such as the console and controller.
