How to Reduce Haloing and Blooming on a Mini LED TV

Compare local-dimming levels on the same dark scene to reduce distracting halos on a Mini LED TV, while balancing black depth, shadow detail, and small-highlight brightness.

Start with your TV’s local-dimming control: compare its available levels on the same dark scene with subtitles or small bright objects. If halos are distracting, try a lower level or Off; if you prefer deeper blacks, try a stronger level. The tradeoff is that reducing local dimming can weaken contrast, while stronger dimming may make tiny highlights less bright. The best setting depends on the TV model and your preference.

Why Mini LED TVs show halos

A Mini LED TV is still an LCD television illuminated by a zoned LED backlight. Each zone covers many pixels. When a small bright object appears within a zone, the backlight has to illuminate an area larger than that object, so light can spill into nearby dark parts of the picture. This glow is often easiest to notice around subtitles, stars, small lights, and bright interface elements on a dark background.

The effect varies with both the number and size of dimming zones and the TV’s image-processing algorithm. RTINGS illustrates the model-specific nature of the issue with a tested Hisense QD7QF that had 160 zones and visible halos in its example, compared with a tested Sony BRAVIA 9 size with 1,512 zones and much less haloing. Those observations do not establish a universal zone-count threshold or guarantee how another size, generation, or model will perform. RTINGS’ Mini LED overview also notes that “Mini LED” has no universally enforced definition and that processing and panel behavior matter alongside zone count.

Compare local-dimming settings first

  1. Open the picture settings. Look for a control called Local Dimming, Local Contrast, or something similar. The name, available levels, and effect vary by manufacturer and model.
  2. Use one consistent test scene. Pause a dark scene with subtitles or a small bright object against a dark background. Change only the local-dimming control, then compare the same frame at each level.
  3. Try a lower level or Off if the glow is distracting. This can make haloing less visible in some content, but may also reduce local contrast and make dark scenes look less deep.
  4. Try a stronger level if black depth matters more to you. It may improve control of the backlight, but very small light-emitting objects can appear dimmer, and other processing artifacts may become noticeable.

Options differ by set. TCL’s FAQ describes Off, Normal, and High: Normal balances brightness and control but may show halos in extreme scenes; High aims to make halos less noticeable, while very small light-emitting objects may be dimmed. TCL’s MiniLED Local Dimming Adjustment Options describes that behavior. For a specific symptom on the BRAVIA 7 II K-98XR70M2, Sony suggests Auto Local Dimming Low or Off; that is advice for that model, not a setting to apply automatically to every TV. Sony’s support guidance gives the model-specific recommendation.

Check other factors without losing picture detail

Brightness and picture mode

If changing local dimming is not enough, compare picture modes or overall brightness using the same scene. Avoid lowering brightness so far that highlights lose their impact or shadow detail disappears. Brightness controls and their effects are not identical across TVs, so make changes gradually and judge the whole picture rather than only the halo.

Subtitles and source content

If the glow is most noticeable around subtitles, check whether it appears with other content or sources. If your streaming app offers subtitle appearance controls, try a less bright or less prominent style as an experiment. Subtitles are a common high-contrast trigger, but there is no single subtitle adjustment established as a fix for every television.

Viewing position and room light

Try watching from your usual seat and with your normal room lighting. Off-axis viewing and ambient light can affect how visible halos seem, though guidance on these perception factors is drawn mainly from monitor advice rather than direct TV evidence. Treat a change in seating or lighting as a low-risk experiment, not a fix for the backlight behavior itself.

When the effect changes suddenly

If blooming is new or seems abnormal, consult the support materials for your exact TV model and firmware. Local-dimming menus and processing are model-dependent, and there is no general firmware update established as a fix for TV blooming. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model rather than installing unofficial software.

When settings are not enough: compare TVs by performance

If you are comparing replacement TVs, look beyond Mini LED branding and zone count. Compare the exact screen size and model in real high-contrast scenes, including subtitles and small highlights, and consider several behaviors together:

  • How well the TV controls halos around small bright objects and subtitles.
  • Whether black areas retain useful shadow detail.
  • How bright highlights appear.
  • Whether zone transitions or other processing artifacts are distracting.

More zones can help, but the count alone does not predict the result. A manufacturer’s zone figure should not be treated as interchangeable across sizes or model generations.
