For finding a file by name, Everything is the clearest fit; for broader searches across indexed Windows data, start with Windows Search; for keyboard-driven search and file-workflow integration, consider Listary. The right choice depends less on a universal speed ranking than on whether you need to search filenames, file contents, or other data—and which locations are included in the index.
Choose by what you need to find
- Know all or part of a filename? Try Everything, which is designed to search file and folder names.
- Need files plus other Windows data? Check Windows Search first; its scope can include common user folders and other indexed data types.
- Want a keyboard-first launcher or search in file workflows? Consider Listary for its documented search bar, fuzzy matching, filters, and File Explorer integration.
- Need words inside documents? Treat that as a separate requirement. Everything can search file contents, but it does not index contents by default and that search can be slow.
These are feature-based recommendations, not results of a head-to-head speed test. No independently measured, comparable benchmark establishes one of these tools as universally fastest.
At a glance
| Tool | Best fit | How its search works | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Search | General Windows search across files and common data types | Classic mode indexes common user folders by default, with locations you can add. Enhanced mode indexes the whole PC. Microsoft says the index is stored locally. | Enhanced coverage may use more system resources. Results depend on indexed locations, file types, and volumes; feature rollouts can vary by build and region. |
| Everything | Finding a file or folder by a known or partial name | Indexes names rather than file contents by default, searches filenames, and updates in real time. It can include external or network locations and file-list snapshots. | Content searching reads files and can be slow. NTFS indexing may require the Everything service or administrator access. |
| Listary | Quick launching and file search integrated into a workflow | Its documented features include a search bar opened by pressing Ctrl twice, fuzzy matching, a deeper search window with filters, configurable scope, and type-to-search in File Explorer. | Listary says it maintains its own index. Its feature claims are vendor statements, not independent comparative results; check current feature availability and compatibility. |
Windows Search: check its scope before replacing it
Windows Search may already cover the folders you use. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows and check whether your files are in the indexed locations. In Classic mode, Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop are indexed by default; you can add locations. Enhanced mode indexes the whole PC, but may use more system resources. Microsoft’s Windows Search indexing options explain the modes and settings.
Windows Search is not limited to filenames. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes searching common data types such as email, contacts, calendar items, documents, photos, and multimedia. That does not mean every file format or connected account is indexed on every PC; the actual results depend on your configuration and data sources. See Windows Search for the documented scope.

Microsoft says data gathered from semantic indexing is stored locally, is not stored by Microsoft, and is not used to train AI models. It also cautions that installed apps may be able to read index data, so install only software you trust. These statements describe Microsoft’s documentation, not a general guarantee about every Windows search feature or third-party app.
Recent Windows 11 search changes are rollout-dependent
On July 13, 2026, a Windows Insider Blog post by Jeff Petty and Anderson Aiziro described a calmer search home, clearer result sources, a setting for web and Microsoft Store suggestions, and improved file search. The authors said the changes were gradually rolling out to Insiders in the Experimental channel and that experience could vary by region. This is not evidence that every Windows 11 user already has the changes; check your own build and region. Read the Windows Insider announcement.

Everything: best aligned with filename hunts
Everything is a focused option when you remember a filename, an extension, or only part of a name and want to narrow the list quickly. Its documented design indexes file and folder names, supports real-time updates, and can include external or network locations as well as file-list snapshots. The vendor describes it as running offline without telemetry or user-data collection; that is the vendor’s own privacy statement, not an independent security audit. See Everything and its FAQ.
Do not assume that a quick name search means file contents are indexed. Everything’s content search reads files and can be slow. If expected files do not appear, check the configured locations and permissions: NTFS indexing may require the Everything service or administrator privileges. Its search syntax help describes search behavior and options.

Listary: useful when search is part of the workflow
Listary’s documented features suit people who want to invoke search from the keyboard and move between finding and opening files without relying only on a standalone results list. Pressing Ctrl twice opens its search bar; its feature page also describes fuzzy matching, a larger deep-search window with filters, configurable index scope including network drives, and type-to-search in File Explorer. Listary says it maintains its own index rather than relying on Windows indexing. Review Listary’s features and Listary.

How to make the choice
- Identify the search target. For names and folders, try Everything. For content inside files or broader data such as email and calendar items, examine Windows Search’s coverage and the specific formats or sources you use.
- Check location coverage. In Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. For Everything or Listary, confirm that the relevant drives and folders are in scope and accessible.
- Choose the workflow. Stick with Windows Search for a built-in option; use Everything for focused name searches; consider Listary if its launcher and file-workflow features match how you work.
- Test with your own files. Search for a known filename, a partial name, and—if needed—a known phrase inside a document. Check that results come from the folders and file types you expect before relying on the tool.
Search time depends on the task and setup, including indexed locations, file types, file-system volumes, permissions, and index state. A fair speed comparison would need the same machines, drives, index state, and search tasks; the available documentation does not establish a reproducible, independently measured winner.
