When petrol prices rise, start by using the car for fewer miles: combine errands, share regular trips, and choose walking, cycling or public transport for suitable journeys. Then reduce wasted fuel with smoother driving, less idling, correctly inflated tyres and less unnecessary weight or roof equipment. Keep up with maintenance, but fix diagnosed problems rather than paying for speculative repairs. The savings vary with your vehicle, routes and driving, so official percentages are estimates—not guarantees.
Start with the miles you can avoid
Fuel economy improvements help, but not driving a journey at all avoids the fuel that journey would have used. The UK Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) says the best way to reduce fuel or energy use is to use a car only when necessary. That does not mean every journey can be replaced: work, caring responsibilities, accessibility and local transport options all matter. It does mean checking whether a particular trip can be combined, shared or made another way before trying to optimize how the car uses fuel.

Combine trips and plan the route
Group errands into one outing where practical instead of making several separate drives. Before setting off, choose a route that avoids predictable congestion and unnecessary detours. Route planning cannot guarantee a faster journey—traffic and road closures change—but repeated stop-start travel and extra distance both use fuel without getting you closer to your destination.

Share regular journeys
For a commute, school run or recurring appointment, see whether another person can share the trip or whether the driving can be rotated. A shared journey can reduce the number of cars making the same trip, though the benefit depends on the extra distance required to collect passengers. If a detour is long, compare it with the fuel saved by leaving another car at home.

Use another mode for suitable short trips
For a short journey, consider walking, cycling or public transport if it is safe, accessible and practical for your circumstances. The relevant comparison is the whole trip: time, connections, carrying needs and return travel as well as cost. There is no need to force an alternative that does not work for the journey; focus on trips where the car is not essential.
Change how you drive before spending money
Smoother driving is a no-cost change that can reduce fuel wasted in repeated acceleration and braking. Look ahead, leave room, accelerate moderately and ease off early when traffic or a junction requires you to slow. Avoiding abrupt inputs can also reduce wear, but it never takes priority over safe control or the road conditions.
Anticipate rather than brake late
Scan well ahead for traffic lights, queues, bends and changes in speed. If you see that traffic is slowing, ease off the accelerator early and let the vehicle slow in a controlled way instead of maintaining speed and braking hard at the last moment. Keep a safe following distance; tailgating reduces the room you have to respond smoothly and safely.

Choose an appropriate speed
Fuel economy generally falls as speed rises, particularly at higher speeds. The US Department of Energy (DOE) says average mileage usually decreases rapidly above 50 mph. That is a broad US generalization, not a recommended speed for every vehicle or road, and it should not be interpreted as a reason to drive at 50 mph regardless of conditions. Observe the legal limit where you are, keep pace safely with traffic, and choose a speed appropriate to visibility, weather and the road.
Avoid treating a single speed as an “ideal” that applies everywhere. Vehicle design, gearing, load, gradients and traffic all affect fuel use. Chasing a particular number can create risk or obstruct traffic; the practical aim is to avoid unnecessary speed and acceleration while driving legally and predictably.
Reduce unnecessary idling
When parked, switch the engine off if it is safe and lawful to do so. Use a fitted stop-start system as intended. Avoid leaving the engine running simply to wait when switching it off is appropriate. The DOE estimates that idling can use a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour; this is US-source context, not an exact rate for every engine. The VCA also notes that parked idling can be an offence in the UK, so check and follow local rules.
Check tyres against the vehicle’s specified pressure
Correct tyre pressure is a simple vehicle check with benefits for fuel economy, tyre life and safety. Find the recommended pressure in the vehicle owner’s manual or on the vehicle’s tyre-pressure placard. Do not inflate tyres to the maximum pressure printed on the tyre sidewall: that figure is not a substitute for the vehicle maker’s recommended setting.

How to check and correct pressure
- Locate the pressure specification in the manual or vehicle placard. Check whether it gives different figures for front and rear tyres or for different load conditions, and use the figure that applies to your situation.
- Use a tyre-pressure gauge or a service-station compressor with a gauge. A separate gauge is optional; you may already have one or be able to use equipment at a service station.
- Measure and adjust the tyres according to the vehicle maker’s instructions. If the car is carrying a heavier load and the manual or placard specifies a different pressure, follow that instruction rather than guessing.
- Recheck the reading and replace the valve caps. If pressure repeatedly drops or a tyre looks damaged, arrange an appropriate inspection rather than treating repeated inflation as a repair.
The DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Fuel Economy says correct inflation can improve gas mileage by 0.6% on average and by up to 3% in some cases. Those are estimates, not a promised saving for every car or a reason to overinflate. Pressure guidance specific to your vehicle takes precedence over a general fuel-economy target.
Remove weight and aerodynamic drag you do not need
Clear unnecessary items from the car and remove external carriers when they are not in use. Extra load requires energy to move, while roof equipment disrupts airflow—especially at speed. A roof box that is empty can still create drag, so removing it matters even when there is nothing inside.
Prioritize roof boxes and bars
VCA figures updated in 2025 estimate that a roof box typically adds around 22% to fuel consumption at 62 mph and 39% at 75 mph. Empty roof bars can add around 7% at motorway speeds. The figures depend on the equipment and conditions, so they are not exact predictions for an individual vehicle. They nevertheless show why taking off unused roof equipment can be more consequential than small adjustments to items carried inside.

If you need a carrier for a particular trip, use it for that trip and remove it afterward if it is designed to be removed safely. Follow the vehicle and carrier instructions for fitting and load limits; fuel economy is not a reason to carry equipment unsafely.

Clear out the boot and cabin
Remove tools, sports equipment, luggage or other items that do not need to stay in the car. Do not remove equipment needed for safety, accessibility or an upcoming journey. The aim is to avoid carrying avoidable weight, not to strip the vehicle of useful or required items.
Maintain the vehicle, but address real needs
Follow the vehicle maker’s service schedule and use the motor-oil grade specified for your engine. Proper maintenance helps the vehicle operate as intended, but the evidence does not support buying generic fuel additives or authorizing unneeded repairs simply because petrol has become more expensive. If a warning light appears, performance changes, or a mechanic identifies a fault, address that specific issue according to professional advice and the vehicle handbook.
Fix problems that have actually been identified
The DOE’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Fuel Economy reports that fixing a noticeably out-of-tune vehicle can improve gas mileage by an average of 4%. That figure applies to vehicles with a noticeable problem; it does not mean every car will gain 4% from a tune-up or justify preventive work that the maker does not call for. Ask what fault has been found, what repair is needed and whether it is part of the scheduled maintenance for your vehicle.
Use the manufacturer-recommended oil grade
The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center says using the manufacturer-recommended motor-oil grade can improve fuel economy by 1%–2%. That is an estimate, and the page does not state a publication date. Check the owner’s manual for the correct specification; do not choose a different grade just to pursue a fuel saving.

Which changes should you try first?
The best first step depends on your situation. Cutting a journey can have a direct effect on the fuel it would have used, but may require a change to your routine. Smoother driving and avoiding unnecessary idling take no special equipment. Checking tyre pressure and removing an unused roof carrier are straightforward adjustments. Maintenance is important, but should be based on the vehicle’s schedule or a diagnosed issue.
| Action | Likely reach | Effort or cost | Most useful when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avoid, combine or share journeys | Can avoid fuel use for a trip or reduce duplicated travel | May require planning or changing arrangements | You have errands that can be grouped or a regular trip that can be shared |
| Walk, cycle or use public transport for a suitable trip | Avoids using the car for that trip | Depends on access, time and local options | The destination and journey make another mode practical |
| Drive smoothly and reduce unnecessary idling | Reduces avoidable acceleration, braking or stationary engine use | No purchase required; habits need attention | Routes include queues, stop-start traffic or avoidable waiting |
| Check tyre pressure | DOE estimates 0.6% average and up to 3% in some cases with correct inflation | Requires access to a gauge or compressor | Pressure is below the vehicle maker’s specification |
| Remove unused roof equipment | Can reduce aerodynamic drag; VCA estimates vary by equipment and speed | Usually a practical adjustment, subject to safe removal | A roof box or bars are fitted but not needed |
| Maintain the vehicle and use specified oil | Depends on the condition and requirements of the particular vehicle | Can involve service or repair costs | A scheduled service is due, a fault is diagnosed or oil is being selected |
Estimate what a fuel-economy change means for your budget
A percentage reduction in fuel consumption is not the same thing as the same percentage reduction in your entire transport budget. Petrol is only one part of motoring costs, and the effect of a change depends on how far you drive, your vehicle’s fuel use, current local prices and whether the change applies to all or only some journeys. Avoid relying on old examples of savings per gallon or litre as if they were current prices.
For a personal estimate, start with what you actually spend on fuel over a representative period, such as a month. If a change reduced fuel use by an estimated proportion, multiply that fuel spending—not all household transport spending—by the proportion to get a rough scenario. For example, using the DOE tyre figure, a 0.6% average improvement would mean multiplying your fuel spend by 0.006 to estimate the corresponding reduction under that estimate. This is an illustration of the calculation, not a prediction that your own car will achieve that result. Your outcome can differ, and several changes do not necessarily add together into a matching total saving.
For travel you can eliminate, compare the fuel cost of those miles with any cost of the alternative, such as a ticket or a shared ride. A shorter or combined route may save fuel but could also change journey time. Use your local pump price and actual driving rather than a generic online savings figure.
Quick Recap
A practical order of operations
- Review your journeys. Identify trips that can be combined, shared or made another way without creating an impractical or inaccessible journey.
- Adjust your driving. Look ahead, accelerate moderately, leave space, slow smoothly and avoid unnecessary idling, while following local law and conditions.
- Check the vehicle’s easy settings. Use the manual or placard for tyre pressure, and remove roof boxes, bars or other items that are not needed.
- Keep to the maintenance schedule. Use the specified oil grade and deal with actual faults rather than speculative fuel-saving purchases.
- Review the result using your own fuel spending. Compare like-for-like periods where possible, recognizing that distance driven, routes, traffic and fuel prices can change the result.
Common mistakes that can erase the benefit
- Using the tyre sidewall maximum as the target: use the vehicle’s own specified pressure instead.
- Driving at an arbitrary “most efficient” speed: obey local limits and drive for conditions; the DOE’s above-50-mph observation is not a universal cruising recommendation.
- Coasting in neutral or braking late: preserve control and follow the vehicle handbook; anticipate traffic and ease off while remaining in gear as appropriate for your vehicle.
- Keeping a roof box fitted because it is empty: empty roof equipment still creates drag, and the VCA reports substantial estimated effects at speed.
- Paying for an unneeded repair or additive: use the service schedule and diagnosed faults as the basis for maintenance decisions.
- Expecting a stated percentage to match your bill: official estimates describe fuel economy under broad conditions, while your mileage, vehicle, routes and prices determine actual spending.
