Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When oil prices rise, you cannot control what a gas station charges—but you can reduce the gallons you use and shop for fuel more carefully. For U.S. drivers, the most practical steps are smoother driving, fewer or combined trips, correct vehicle maintenance, and checking whether a cheaper station is worth the detour.
Why oil prices affect—but do not determine—gas prices
Crude oil is a major influence on U.S. gasoline prices, but pump prices also depend on how much gasoline is available relative to demand. Refinery or pipeline disruptions, inventories, seasonal demand, and seasonal fuel specifications can all contribute to price changes. The Energy Information Administration explains that “Gasoline prices generally follow crude oil prices.” EIA’s overview of factors affecting gasoline prices describes those influences.

Crude oil prices reflect global supply and demand, which individual drivers cannot meaningfully forecast or influence. A more useful response is to focus on fuel consumption and local purchase choices. As an example of seasonality—not a forecast—the EIA reported in 2024 that the average U.S. retail price of regular gasoline in August was about 40 cents per gallon higher than in January, on average over 2004–2023.
How can I save money on gas when prices go up?
Drive smoothly and avoid unnecessary idling
Accelerating hard and braking sharply wastes fuel. Accelerate gradually, leave room to slow down smoothly, and avoid idling when you can safely turn the engine off. On suitable highway trips, cruise control can help maintain a steady speed. The best speed and driving approach depend on road conditions, traffic, and your vehicle; these steps do not guarantee a fixed percentage of savings.

Combine errands and skip trips where practical
Plan several errands into one outing when that works for your schedule, and consider carpooling, transit, walking, biking, or remote work if those options are practical. Every trip avoided means less fuel used, though the amount saved depends on the distance and vehicle.
EPA says leaving a car at home two days a week can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 3,000 pounds per year. That is an emissions estimate, not a universal estimate of dollars saved; it should not be converted directly into a fuel-cost figure.

Remove cargo you do not need
Extra weight makes a vehicle work harder. Remove unneeded items from the trunk or cargo area, while keeping required safety equipment and anything you need for the trip. The benefit varies with the vehicle and load.
What vehicle maintenance can help reduce fuel use?
Check tire pressure against the vehicle’s recommendation
Use the pressure specified on the driver-side doorjamb placard or in the owner’s manual, and check tires when they are cold. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall as the target; that figure is not a substitute for the vehicle maker’s recommended pressure.
In a 2021 consumer guide, the U.S. Department of Energy estimated that properly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by 0.6% on average, and by up to 3% in some cases. Those are estimates, not a promised result for any particular vehicle. A basic tire-pressure gauge can help with the check, but the correct target still comes from your vehicle documentation. FuelEconomy.gov’s maintenance guidance explains tire pressure and other maintenance steps.

Follow the maintenance schedule and use specified fluids
Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual and use the motor oil and fuel grade the manufacturer specifies. A 2022 DOE article reports an average 4% improvement in gas mileage for properly maintained vehicles; that is an overall average, not a savings guarantee for a particular repair or car. Maintenance needs and the effect of a fault vary by vehicle, so use the manufacturer’s schedule rather than replacing parts or fluids based on generalized fuel-saving claims.

Should I drive farther to get cheaper gas?
Not automatically. A lower posted price saves money only if the savings on the fuel you buy outweigh the cost of the extra driving. Compare the price difference, the amount you plan to buy, your vehicle’s fuel economy, and the added distance. If you are already passing the cheaper station, the detour may be negligible; a special round trip can erase a small per-gallon discount.
The Federal Trade Commission says apps and websites can help shoppers find local prices. FTC guidance on saving money on gas covers price shopping. Prices and app coverage can change, so check current local listings. There is no universal break-even distance: it depends on the price gap, fuel purchased, route, and car.

Are gas-saving additives or gadgets worth buying?
Be skeptical of products promising large, effortless fuel savings. In a 2004 consumer alert, the FTC described EPA testing of more than 100 purported gas-saving devices: very few provided a benefit, and some could cause engine damage or increased emissions. That is historical evidence cited by the alert, not a current test of every product on sale.
EPA also says that registration requirements for fuel additives do not validate claims that an additive improves fuel economy. EPA’s fuel-additive registration information explains what registration does—and does not—establish. Before buying an additive or device, look for credible evidence for the specific product and vehicle, and consider the risk of damage or emissions as well as the purchase price.
Would a more fuel-efficient vehicle lower my costs?
If you are already considering replacing your vehicle, compare official fuel-economy estimates using the same annual mileage, city/highway mix, and fuel-price assumptions. EPA labels and FuelEconomy.gov can help estimate and compare fuel use and costs.
A vehicle that uses less fuel is not automatically the least expensive choice overall. A fuel-only comparison does not include purchase price, financing, insurance, or maintenance. Replacing a functioning vehicle solely because fuel prices have risen may not reduce your total household costs.
