Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchMake screenshot tests repeatable by controlling the rendering environment and page state before changing the image-diff threshold. Use Playwright’s screenshot assertions, wait for application conditions instead of fixed delays, isolate genuinely dynamic content, and investigate actual and diff images before accepting a new baseline. Retries can reveal flakiness; a test that passes on retry is not thereby fixed.
Why Playwright screenshots can differ
A screenshot can change even when your application code does not. Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Keep the environment that creates a baseline consistent with the environment that checks it.
Record these details for both baseline generation and failing runs:
- Playwright version and browser project, including the browser version used.
- Operating system and whether the browser is headless or headed.
- Viewport size and device scale factor.
- Relevant browser settings and whether the machine is running on battery or external power.
When a suite deliberately covers different real configurations, treat rendering-sensitive configurations as separate baseline sets. Playwright snapshot names include browser and platform information; browsers and platforms can render differently. Playwright supports Chromium, WebKit, Firefox, and branded browser projects, so do not assume one engine’s baseline is interchangeable with another’s. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide and browser documentation.

Use screenshot assertions and wait for real page conditions
For visual checks, prefer Playwright’s screenshot assertion over taking an arbitrary screenshot and comparing it yourself. A page assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, then compares the last capture with the baseline. This helps avoid capturing while the page is still changing, but it cannot make nondeterministic application state deterministic.
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('pricing page looks right', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/pricing');
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Plans' })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('pricing.png');
});
The locator form is useful when only one component needs visual coverage:
await expect(page.getByTestId('pricing-card')).toHaveScreenshot('pricing-card.png');
Wait for the application condition that makes the page ready—such as the expected heading being visible or loaded content appearing—with Playwright assertions. Avoid treating a fixed sleep as proof of readiness: network and rendering time vary, so a delay that works locally can race in another run. Playwright’s assertions auto-wait for conditions and are intended to help avoid flaky timeouts and race conditions. See Playwright’s assertions documentation.

Control animations, caret, and volatile content
Use screenshot options for transient browser effects
Screenshot assertions disable animations by default. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion; infinite animations are cancelled for the capture. The caret is hidden by default as well. These defaults remove common sources of visual noise without requiring broad CSS overrides. Check the assertion’s screenshot options when you need different behavior for a particular test. See the page screenshot assertion API.

For timestamps, rotating promotions, or other intentionally changing regions, use a capture stylesheet to hide or neutralize only the unstable area. Playwright’s stylePath option applies a stylesheet during screenshot capture; the stylesheet can pierce Shadow DOM and inner frames.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('account.png', {
stylePath: './tests/screenshot-stability.css',
});
/* tests/screenshot-stability.css */
[data-testid="last-updated"],
[data-testid="rotating-promo"] {
visibility: hidden !important;
}
Keep masks narrow. Hiding a whole panel may silence a diff while concealing a real layout or content regression. If the varying value itself matters to the test, stabilize its input or assert it separately instead of masking it.

Tune image-diff tolerance only after inspecting changes
Playwright’s documented default YIQ color threshold is 0.2. Screenshot assertions also support maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio. These are tradeoffs, not universal fixes: a more permissive threshold may absorb harmless pixel variation but can also let a real visual regression pass.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard.png', {
maxDiffPixels: 100,
});
Use pixel limits only when reviewed differences justify them. Examine representative expected, actual, and diff images first; choose a threshold that allows the specific benign variation without masking changes the test is supposed to catch. A tighter threshold is more sensitive, but it is not a substitute for matching the baseline and test environments. See the visual comparison documentation and the assertion options.
Keep baseline updates deliberate
Commit visual snapshot files so changes are reviewable alongside code. When a page changes intentionally, regenerate references with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Do this only after confirming the new appearance is intended. Updating snapshots to clear unexplained failures turns a detection mechanism into a record of accidental changes. Review the resulting image diffs as part of the change.
Use retries as evidence, not as a repair
Playwright can retry failed tests when retries are configured. A test that fails and then passes is categorized as flaky. That label is useful evidence that a failure is intermittent, but the retry does not identify the cause or prove that the test is reliable now. Track which tests fail only on retry, then investigate their environment, readiness conditions, and dynamic content rather than increasing retries as the sole remedy. See Playwright’s retry documentation.
Debug a failing screenshot in a repeatable order
- Compare run conditions. Check Playwright and browser versions, OS, headless mode, viewport, and device scale factor against the baseline run. Confirm the failure is not simply a baseline created under a different rendering environment.
- Open the visual artifacts. Compare expected, actual, and diff images. Identify whether the change is a layout shift, missing content, font or rendering noise, animation frame, or a clearly changed component.
- Check readiness and volatility. Replace fixed waits with assertions on the expected application state. Determine whether a dynamic region should be stabilized, asserted separately, or narrowly masked.
- Inspect browser activity around capture. In Playwright UI Mode, inspect screenshots alongside browser DevTools and the network panel for logs, failed requests, or content that had not loaded when the assertion ran. See UI Mode documentation.
- Change one cause at a time. Rerun after correcting the environment or state. Only then consider a documented diff tolerance, and validate it against reviewed images.
- Update the baseline only for an accepted design change. Review the new reference image and commit it with the intentional UI change.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot from a URL without configuring a Playwright browser run, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a screenshot or PDF; the API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. This is useful for URL capture, but it does not replace Playwright assertions against your application’s test state or visual baselines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a passing retry mean my screenshot test is fixed?
No. A fail-then-pass test is categorized as flaky; investigate the cause rather than treating the retry as a fix.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use one screenshot baseline for every browser and operating system?
Not reliably. Rendering can differ across browsers and platforms, so maintain baselines for the configurations your suite actually tests.
