How to Reduce False Triggers on an ESP32 Presence Radar

Learn how to diagnose unwanted LD2410 presence reports in ESPHome, adjust the relevant gate thresholds, and distinguish sensitivity from timeout.

If an ESPHome installation with a Hi-Link LD2410-family radar reports presence when nobody is in the monitored area, first identify whether the event is reported as moving, still, or both. Then use engineering mode to inspect the affected distance gates and adjust only their thresholds, checking the result in the room where the sensor is installed. There is no universal threshold setting: calibration is an observe-adjust-observe process.

Check that these instructions match your radar

This walkthrough covers ESPHome’s LD2410 component and its documented LD2410, LD2410B, and LD2410C variants, which use similar communication protocols. Other radar families may expose different controls; do not assume that an LD2410 setting or diagnosis applies to every ESP32 presence sensor.

ESPHome’s LD2410 documentation describes the component and its available controls. The adjustment process below follows that integration’s per-gate engineering readings.

Verify the UART connection before tuning sensitivity

The LD2410 communicates with ESPHome over UART. ESPHome specifies no parity and one stop bit, and the module’s default baud rate is 256000. The documentation recommends using hardware UART pins at this rate. If readings are missing or unstable, confirm the serial configuration and wiring before treating the problem as a sensitivity issue.

Identify which detection path is reporting presence

ESPHome exposes separate has_moving_target and has_still_target states, as well as the combined has_target state. Check these alongside the sensor’s engineering readings. This helps distinguish a moving-target event from a still-presence report before you change a threshold.

  • If has_moving_target changes, inspect the moving-energy readings for the relevant gates.
  • If has_still_target changes, inspect the still-energy readings.
  • If the combined target state remains on but neither path shows a new event, check the timeout separately rather than assuming another trigger occurred.

Use engineering mode to tune the affected gates

  1. Enable engineering mode in the LD2410 configuration. ESPHome documents this mode for exposing per-gate readings.
  2. Observe gX_move_energy and gX_still_energy, where X identifies a distance gate. Note which gate readings accompany the unwanted report.
  3. Adjust the sensitivity threshold for the implicated gate or gates, rather than lowering sensitivity everywhere without evidence. The LD2410 manual describes independent gate sensitivity; a copy of the manual surfaced on a third-party host, so consult the current manufacturer manual for detailed model-specific instructions: HLK-LD2410 User Manual v1.02.
  4. Repeat the observation with the room empty and with a person in the intended detection area. Change one relevant setting at a time so you can tell what affected the result.
  5. Continue adjusting and observing in the installed room until detection is suitable for that setup. ESPHome does not publish a universally correct threshold set or a fixed test duration.
  6. Disable engineering mode after calibration.

Separate a lingering presence state from a new trigger

Sensitivity affects whether the radar reports a target at a gate. Timeout controls how long the occupied state takes to transition to unoccupied after detection; it is not the same adjustment. If presence stays on after an event but there is no new energy event, inspect the timeout or unoccupied delay as a separate control. ESPHome exposes a timeout control, and the LD2410 manual describes a delay before reporting the transition from occupied to unoccupied.

Do not transfer model-specific advice to another radar

Several other ESPHome-supported radar families have their own controls and cautions. These are not established causes or fixes for LD2410 false triggers.

  • LD2420: ESPHome’s LD2420 documentation says solid objects and noise outside the configured minimum and maximum detection gates may cause false detections or abnormal gate thresholds. This caution is specific to LD2420.
  • LD6002B: ESPHome’s LD6002B documentation warns against using classic ESP32 UART0 pins GPIO1 and GPIO3, because bootloader output on UART0 can corrupt the radar module’s state until it is power-cycled. This wiring warning is specific to LD6002B.
  • Seeed MR24HPC1: ESPHome’s MR24HPC1 documentation describes separate sensitivity and motion-trigger accumulation controls, including multi-judgment triggers intended to reduce false alarms. Those controls are not LD2410 settings.

If choosing among sensor families, compare the specific model’s configurable gates or zones, moving/still reporting, configuration support, and intended mounting or application. The cited documentation does not provide comparable accuracy tests, so it cannot establish which model produces fewer false triggers in a given room.
