How to Reduce Ear Discomfort from Wearing Earbuds Overnight

Earbud pain at bedtime is a reason to remove the device. Learn how pillow pressure, fit, moisture, listening habits, and alternative audio options affect comfort.

If an earbud hurts while you are trying to sleep, take it out. Pressure from a pillow and a poor fit can irritate the outer ear or ear canal; pushing through the pain is not a solution. For bedtime audio, try a bedside or pillow speaker to avoid putting a device in your ear, or compare a sleep headband if you prefer wearable audio.

Why earbuds can hurt overnight

Pillow pressure and fit

When you sleep on your side, an earbud can be squeezed between your ear and pillow. A tip that is too large, protrudes, or otherwise fits poorly can add pressure and irritate the ear. The discomfort may be more noticeable after hours in the same position. Cleveland Clinic discusses pressure and fit as potential sources of irritation (Cleveland Clinic); University of Rochester Medicine also notes that earbuds can cause ear irritation or pain (University of Rochester Medicine).

Moisture and wax

In-ear devices can trap moisture, particularly if you put them in while your ears are still damp after bathing. Wearing them for extended periods may also push earwax deeper, contributing to irritation or a blocked feeling. These are risks, not inevitable outcomes: overnight use does not mean you will automatically develop an infection or hearing loss. Cleveland Clinic describes these concerns in its guidance on sleeping with earbuds (Cleveland Clinic).

What to do when an earbud hurts

  1. Remove it. Let the ear rest rather than continuing to sleep with painful pressure.
  2. Do not force the tip deeper. If the earbud feels uncomfortable, stop using it instead of trying to make it stay in place.
  3. Check the fit and position. Notice whether the device protrudes or presses against the pillow. If you sleep on your side, consider whether the pillow is pushing it into your ear.
  4. Keep the ear and device dry. Wait until your ears are dry after bathing before using in-ear audio.

How to make bedtime listening less irritating

Lower the volume and set a timer

Keep audio quiet—Cleveland Clinic audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff, AuD, suggests about half volume or lower, with enough awareness to hear someone speaking nearby. Use a sleep timer so playback stops after you fall asleep rather than running all night. Low volume and shorter listening time address sound exposure, but they do not make a painful or poorly fitting earbud comfortable. Cleveland Clinic’s recommendations are in its bedtime listening guidance (Cleveland Clinic).

Clean the earbuds and avoid damp ears

Clean earbuds at least weekly, as Cleveland Clinic advises, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Let the device dry before wearing it, and do not insert earbuds into damp ears after a shower. Houston Methodist audiologist Mary Williams notes that extended use of closed-back headphones, earphones, or earbuds can raise the risk of ear-canal irritation or infection, especially if moisture is trapped (Houston Methodist).

Keep alerts audible

If you need to hear alarms, calls, or other important sounds, avoid noise-canceling modes at bedtime. Cleveland Clinic recommends preserving awareness of nearby alerts when listening as you fall asleep (Cleveland Clinic).

Alternatives to in-ear earbuds

Option How it may help What to consider
External bedside speaker Plays audio without putting a device in or pressing it against your ear. Sound carries into the room; keep volume low and use a timer. Cleveland Clinic audiologist Valerie Pavlovich Ruff says, “Using an external speaker would be best.”
Pillow speaker Can provide sound near the pillow without an in-ear tip. Placement and comfort vary; check whether it creates pressure where you sleep.
Sleep headband headphones Wearable audio avoids an in-ear earbud. A headband can still feel uncomfortable depending on fit, materials, and sleeping position. It is an option to compare, not a guaranteed remedy.

For side sleepers especially, compare alternatives by whether they press on the ear, whether you can keep volume low and set a timer, whether alerts remain audible, and how the device must be cleaned. University of Rochester Medicine neurotologist Dorothy Pan, MD, PhD, cautions that “There isn’t strong evidence that over-the-ear headphones are inherently safer than earbuds” (University of Rochester Medicine). Changing form factor may relieve pressure for you, but comfort and suitability vary.

When to seek medical advice

Stop using earbuds overnight and consult a clinician if you have ear pain, a change in hearing, or signs that could indicate infection. Houston Methodist likewise advises seeking medical care for irritation or possible infection after using audio devices (Houston Methodist).
