How to reduce drift and noise in fluorescent pressure-sensor readings

A practical guide to diagnosing and reducing drift and noise in fluorescent pressure readings, covering PSP imaging, fiber-optic Fabry–Perot sensors, temperature compensation, reference calibration and filtering.

A changing fluorescent pressure reading has two fundamentally different causes. Drift is a systematic change in baseline or sensitivity over time or temperature; noise is short-term random variation around the underlying value. You reduce them differently: stabilize and reference the optical system for drift, measure temperature and recalibrate the sensor response for cross-sensitivity, then diagnose the noise source before choosing a filter.

First identify what “fluorescent pressure sensor” means in your setup. It may be pressure-sensitive paint (PSP), where pressure is inferred from fluorescence images, or a fiber-optic Fabry–Perot sensor that uses a fluorescent element to measure temperature alongside an interferometric pressure signal. Their signal chains, error sources and correction models are not interchangeable.

Identify the architecture before changing settings

Write down what is actually measured, not just the product name. Record the excitation source, detector, sensing material, acquisition settings and whether pressure is derived from image intensity, fluorescence lifetime, an interferometric cavity, or a combination of signals.

Pressure-sensitive paint or another fluorescence-imaging system

In a PSP arrangement, a camera records fluorescence from a coated surface and pressure is inferred from a calibrated intensity relationship, often using an intensity ratio or another normalized image quantity. Light-source instability, camera/readout noise and paint photodegradation can all appear as a changing pressure value. The available PSP evidence identifies those effects as coupled errors, but the detailed article was not accessible; treat the list as a diagnostic starting point rather than a complete uncertainty budget.

Fiber-optic Fabry–Perot sensing with fluorescent temperature measurement

Here pressure is obtained from the change in an optical cavity, while fluorescence provides temperature information or an auxiliary temperature channel. A pressure cavity can change both its baseline and its pressure sensitivity as temperature changes. The pressure signal therefore needs a device-specific temperature-compensation model, not a generic correction copied from another sensor.

A 2019 Sensors paper describes this hybrid architecture and uses inverse discrete wavelet reconstruction. That demonstrates one way to combine the signals; it does not establish a universal wavelet setting or filtering recipe.

Separate drift from noise with a controlled test

At a fixed known pressure and fixed temperature, record a time series without changing illumination, gain, exposure, wavelength settings or processing. A slow, one-directional or repeatable change indicates drift. Rapid scatter that reverses from sample to sample is noise. If the mean moves only when temperature moves, temperature cross-sensitivity is likely rather than an electronics-only problem.

Repeat the test at several pressures. A changing intercept suggests baseline drift; a changing slope suggests sensitivity drift. Repeat it at several temperatures. If both intercept and slope vary with temperature, a single offset correction cannot be sufficient.

Observed behavior Most likely class of problem First check
Reading moves slowly while pressure and temperature are held constant Source or detector settling, photodegradation, electronics warm-up or baseline drift Record an unpressurized or reference baseline with the final operating settings
Different parts of one image give different values at the same pressure Spatial illumination or detector nonuniformity Inspect a uniform reference across the field
Value changes when temperature changes, even at constant pressure Temperature-dependent baseline or pressure sensitivity Measure temperature at the sensor and calibrate at representative temperatures
Rapid scatter persists at fixed pressure and temperature Optical, detector, interrogator or mechanical noise Compare repeated readings and isolate source, detector and sensor contributions
Noise falls after averaging but the response becomes too slow Filtering trade-off Use an Allan-deviation or equivalent stability analysis to select averaging time

A practical seven-step troubleshooting workflow

  1. Name the signal chain

Document whether your value comes from fluorescence intensity, an image, lifetime, cavity length or a fused pressure-and-temperature estimate. Note the excitation wavelength or source type, detector, sensor material, exposure and gain, sampling rate, pressure range and temperature range. This prevents applying an imaging correction to an interferometric measurement, or vice versa.

  2. Establish baseline stability before a run

Set the source and detector to the exact settings used for measurement, then allow the apparatus to settle while recording a baseline series. Do not assume a universal warm-up time: a 2024 Scientific Reports study observed small baseline drift that may have been associated with LED or camera stabilization and recommended checking stability on the actual apparatus.

Save the baseline rather than merely watching a live display. It becomes the reference for deciding whether a later change is a real pressure response or a change in the instrument.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Separate temporal drift from spatial nonuniformity

For camera-based systems, test both dimensions. A temporal test follows one region over time; a spatial test compares locations at the same time. A stable average can hide a field gradient, while a spatially uniform image can still drift as the source warms.

Pichayawaytin and co-authors reported a two-reference method for compensating temporal and spatial variation in a fluorescent microarray reader. That is evidence that references can be useful in a compatible imaging arrangement, not validation of the same method for every PSP coating. If you adapt the idea, place references where they experience the same illumination and optical path as the sensing area.

  4. Measure temperature and calibrate the response at temperature

Install or use a temperature measurement that represents the sensor, not merely the room. Apply known pressures at several temperatures spanning the intended operating range, then fit the pressure response with the measured temperature as an input. The model may need both a temperature-dependent offset and a temperature-dependent sensitivity.

In the dual-cavity Fabry–Perot study by Bae and co-authors, one cavity supplied a temperature indication and the pressure cavity was compensated using its measured temperature response. In that particular polymer-diaphragm sensor, pressure sensitivity changed from 0.0122 to 0.0218 micrometres per kilopascal between 26 and 50 °C. Those coefficients belong to that sensor design and range; they are not transferable specifications.

  5. Measure the noise floor before filtering

Hold pressure and temperature constant and collect enough repeated readings to characterize the unfiltered variation. Then test likely contributors separately where possible: illumination fluctuations, detector or readout noise, interrogator electronics and mechanical–thermal sensor noise.

The Bae study identifies shot noise, thermal noise, spectrometer-amplifier noise and light-source relative-intensity noise in its optical interrogation system. In that setup, optical-interrogation noise was larger than the mechanical–thermal contribution. Your ranking may differ, so measure rather than assume.

  6. Choose filtering from the measured noise and required response time

Filtering reduces variance by averaging information over time, but it also delays a genuine pressure change. Test candidate moving averages, low-pass filters or other methods against a known pressure step and report both residual noise and response time.

Allan deviation is useful when noise changes with averaging time. Plot stability against averaging period and select the shortest period that meets the required repeatability without masking the pressure events you need to detect. The 2024 fluorophore-temperature study used Allan-deviation analysis to guide filter length in its camera-and-illumination setup; that supports the method, not a universal filter value for pressure sensors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Recheck calibration after every material change

Repeat reference-pressure checks after changing the light source, detector, sensor material, electronics, temperature range, optical alignment or processing code. The cited sources do not establish a universal recalibration interval. Let the observed baseline and sensitivity stability determine your interval, and shorten it when the operating environment changes.

Reducing drift in fluorescence-imaging pressure measurements

Stabilize the optical source and detector

Use fixed source intensity, exposure, gain and frame timing during a run. Record the source and detector state with the data so a later change can be traced to an instrument setting rather than pressure. Check the baseline after the source reaches its normal operating condition; a live value that appears stable for a few seconds is not proof of long-term stability.

Use references for compatible optical paths

A reference that sees the same illumination changes can reveal source drift, while a spatial reference can reveal field nonuniformity. Normalize the sensing signal only after confirming that the reference is itself stable and does not respond to pressure or temperature in the same way as the sensing area.

Pichayawaytin et al., in Measurement (published 31 May 2024), reported up to a 26-fold improvement in detection repeatability for their fluorescent microarray-reader method. The result was obtained under that study’s ISO settings, shutter speeds, light-source intensities and analysis areas. It is not a generic improvement factor for PSP or other pressure sensors.

Check aging and photodegradation

If the baseline changes with cumulative illumination even when the source and camera are stable, compare a freshly prepared or shielded reference with the sensing area. Paint or fluorophore aging can alter the calibration relationship, so a one-time baseline subtraction will not correct a changing sensitivity. Recalibrate when the material, illumination dose or surface condition has changed.

Reducing drift in fiber-optic Fabry–Perot sensors

Build a pressure–temperature calibration, not an offset-only correction

Use a pressure chamber or other controlled pressure source and a conventional reference pressure instrument. At each calibration temperature, apply several known pressures in both increasing and decreasing sequences when practical. Fit the measured cavity response to pressure and temperature, then validate the model at temperatures and pressures that were not used for fitting.

Do not transfer coefficients from another device, even if its cavity dimensions or fluorescent material appear similar. Manufacturing tolerances, diaphragm stress, optical alignment and material properties can change both the zero point and the pressure coefficient.

Use the fluorescent channel as a measured temperature input

In a dual-cavity design, the temperature cavity can provide the input needed to correct the pressure cavity. Verify the temperature channel independently before relying on it: an error in temperature becomes an error in the compensated pressure value.

Interpret published resolution in context

Bae et al. reported 0.021 kPa pressure resolution for their tested dual-cavity Fabry–Perot sensor and optical interrogation system. The paper includes both mechanical–thermal and optical-system contributions and found optical-system noise dominant. That number is not a specification for a different sensor, interrogator or installation.

Calibration procedure and acceptance checklist

  1. Define the operating envelope: list minimum and maximum pressure, temperature, pressure slew rate and required response time.
  2. Install the reference: use a calibrated reference pressure instrument connected so it measures the same pressure as the fluorescent sensor.
  3. Stabilize conditions: hold each pressure and temperature point long enough to observe whether the reading is still drifting.
  4. Collect repeated data: save raw optical data, processed values, temperature, timestamps and instrument settings.
  5. Fit only your device: include temperature terms when the measured slope or intercept changes with temperature.
  6. Validate independently: test intermediate pressures and temperatures not used in the fit, then examine residuals for trend, hysteresis and changing variance.
  7. Set an operational rule: define when a baseline check, recalibration or sensor replacement is required.
  8. Record the correction: preserve the calibration coefficients, reference-instrument identity, conditions, software version and filtering settings with every result.

Common failure modes and fixes

Failure mode Why a simple fix fails Better response
Subtracting one baseline from every reading It removes an offset at one condition but not a temperature-dependent slope or a changing sensitivity Measure temperature and fit the pressure response over the operating range
Applying a long moving average immediately It can hide pressure transients and make the sensor appear stable only because events are delayed Characterize the unfiltered noise, use Allan deviation or an equivalent analysis, and verify step response
Treating image nonuniformity as time drift A spatial gradient remains after temporal normalization Map the field with a uniform reference and correct spatial variation separately
Assuming a published sensitivity applies to your sensor Coefficients depend on cavity, diaphragm, material, interrogator and temperature range Calibrate each device with a reference pressure instrument
Changing optics without repeating calibration Source spectrum, intensity, alignment and detector response can alter the signal chain Repeat baseline and reference-pressure checks after the change
Calling every fluctuation “sensor noise” Optical-interrogation noise may dominate mechanical–thermal noise Measure source, detector, electronics and sensor contributions separately

How to choose a correction strategy

There is no evidence for one universally best correction. Choose according to the architecture and the error you have measured.

Decision axis Fluorescence imaging or PSP Fiber-optic Fabry–Perot with fluorescence temperature channel
Primary measured signal Image intensity, ratio, lifetime or another fluorescence-derived quantity Interferometric cavity response, optionally combined with fluorescent temperature
Main drift checks Source and camera stabilization, reference regions, spatial uniformity and material aging Temperature-dependent offset and sensitivity, cavity stability and interrogator baseline
Calibration burden Optical references and pressure calibration for the coating and imaging geometry Known pressures across temperature, with a device-specific pressure–temperature model
Filtering concern Image/readout noise versus spatial detail and frame rate Interrogator noise versus pressure response time and cavity tracking
Transferability of published figures Not established across coatings, cameras and illumination arrangements Not established across sensors; cited values are specific to the tested design

What to report with a pressure result

A number without its correction conditions is difficult to interpret. Report the sensor architecture, sensing material, pressure and temperature range, reference instrument, calibration method, source and detector settings, sampling rate, filter or averaging period, and whether the quoted uncertainty includes drift, noise, hysteresis and temperature effects.

State whether a result is a short-term repeatability measurement or a long-term stability measurement. Include the duration of the baseline test and the temperature history. If you used a reference-based spatial or temporal correction, describe where the reference was placed and whether it shared the optical path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The USGS manual for field fluorescence measurements of water constituents illustrates why standards and temperature corrections matter when evaluating fluorescence drift, but its procedures are not pressure-sensor calibration instructions. Use it as a general reminder to document standards and temperature, not as a substitute for a pressure calibration.

Key study figures, with their limits

  • Up to 26-fold repeatability improvement: reported by Pichayawaytin and co-authors for a fluorescent microarray-reader method under specified ISO settings, shutter speeds, source intensities and analysis areas.
  • 0.021 kPa pressure resolution: reported by Bae and co-authors for one dual-cavity Fabry–Perot sensor and its optical interrogation system.
  • 0.0122 to 0.0218 μm/kPa sensitivity change: measured in that same study over 26–50 °C for its polymer-diaphragm sensor.

None of these figures is a general specification for every fluorescent pressure sensor. Tie any performance claim to the sensor, apparatus, operating range and correction method that produced it.
