Lower bitrate can reduce transfer, but the smallest advertised Droplet is not automatically the cheapest workable choice: it must sustain your stream with reliability headroom. Powering off a bundled Droplet does not stop its compute billing.
Find out what is driving the bill
Separate the monthly cost into compute, outbound transfer and any retained add-ons such as backups or snapshots. DigitalOcean’s Droplet pricing documentation explains compute billing and included transfer; its bandwidth billing page describes transfer accounting.

- Open the DigitalOcean billing page and record Droplet charges, team transfer used and projected usage. Included transfer is pooled across the team’s Droplets, so a stream can use allowance shared with other workloads. The pool does not roll over month to month.
- Check whether the bill includes backups or snapshots you still retain. DigitalOcean lists these separately; include them in a cost-cutting decision only if you actually have those resources.
- Record CPU, memory and disk use during representative streaming conditions. DigitalOcean’s plan-selection guidance warns that overprovisioning costs more, while an undersized Droplet can degrade performance or fail. Use monitoring and alerts rather than guessing from an idle reading.
- In your encoder, note the actual resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. These settings affect both server workload and the amount of data sent out.
Estimate transfer from the actual stream bitrate
A continuous stream sends roughly bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 in megabytes, before audio, protocol overhead, reconnects and unit differences. At a steady 5 Mbps for 30 days, the raw arithmetic is 1,620,000 megabits, or 202,500 megabytes—about 1.62 decimal TB / 1,507 GiB before overhead. This is an illustrative calculation, not a published benchmark or a bill quote. Compare it with DigitalOcean’s actual team usage and projections.
DigitalOcean pools included outbound transfer across team Droplets. Its official pricing documentation lists excess outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB, while inbound transfer is free; the overage rate was last verified 25 Aug 2026. Since the allowance is shared, compare expected stream use with the team’s remaining pool, not just the allowance shown beside one Droplet.

Match YouTube quality settings to the audience and server
Bitrate is a major transfer-cost lever. YouTube’s live encoder settings currently recommend 5 Mbps for H.264 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for H.264 1080p60. These are recommendations for those specific combinations, not a requirement to stream at either setting. Choose a resolution and frame rate the content needs, then set a bitrate appropriate to that combination.
- YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265 or AV1 options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds.
- YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers; sending a higher input bitrate is not the only way to make the stream available to different viewers.
- Test with representative audio and movement. A static image can conceal problems that appear with motion or sound.
- YouTube’s streaming tips say, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Treat this as headroom above the stream bitrate when planning network capacity, rather than setting the connection exactly at the target bitrate.
Reducing bitrate can trim outbound transfer, but do not cut it so far that the picture no longer serves the audience or so far that the stream becomes unstable. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages after each adjustment.

Choose the smallest Droplet that sustains the workload
Once you have observations from a representative stream, compare suitable plans on sustained CPU performance, RAM headroom, disk constraints, monthly price and included outbound transfer. A lower monthly price can be a false saving if the server cannot keep up or if its smaller transfer allowance increases overage exposure.
DigitalOcean’s current pricing page, accessed 3 Oct 2026, lists Basic bundled plans starting at $4 per month. Its displayed Basic table includes a 1 GiB/1 vCPU configuration at $6/month with 1,000 GiB included transfer and a 2 GiB/1 vCPU option at $12/month with 2,000 GiB. These catalog prices and configurations can change; confirm the live catalog before purchasing. Bundled CPU Droplets are billed per second with a 60-second or $0.01 minimum and a cap of 672 hours (28 days) in a month.

Powering off does not stop compute charges
DigitalOcean says billing for a Droplet begins at creation and ends at destruction. The resources remain reserved, and the Droplet remains billable, while it is powered off. A powered-off Droplet also cannot keep a 24/7 stream running. Do not treat a shutdown as a way to pause compute charges.
Resize carefully—or migrate when a smaller plan is needed
DigitalOcean offers CPU/RAM-only resizing and resizing that includes disk, but disk size can constrain the destination. Its resize instructions require powering off and recommend a graceful shutdown. DigitalOcean’s smaller Droplet support page says a Droplet cannot simply be resized to a smaller plan and recommends migration where needed. Check the current instructions and destination eligibility before scheduling a change.

- Confirm from monitoring that CPU, memory and disk usage leave adequate headroom under real stream conditions.
- Compare the target plan’s resources, disk capacity, price and included transfer with both the current plan and the team’s transfer projection.
- If CPU/RAM-only resizing is available and fits the workload, plan for the required shutdown. If disk sizing prevents a smaller target, arrange a migration instead.
- Schedule the interruption or establish a failover plan before shutting down; a live stream will be interrupted during the resize or migration.
- After the change, run a representative test and monitor the Droplet, transfer and YouTube stream health.
Verify savings without sacrificing reliability
After changing a plan or encoder setting, compare DigitalOcean’s billing usage and daily projections with your earlier readings. Then observe a representative stream and check YouTube’s stream-health tools. YouTube recommends testing the actual setup and leaving capacity headroom; if the stream develops health issues or server resources become constrained, restore the needed capacity rather than optimizing for the lowest displayed plan price.
