To reduce the data your connection sends while Castr streams to YouTube, lower the encoder’s video bitrate, then reduce resolution or frame rate if needed, and stream only as long as necessary. Check Castr’s live dashboard to see the bitrate actually being sent. These changes affect the broadcaster’s upload; they do not directly control the separate bandwidth Castr uses to deliver its player to viewers.
First, identify which data use you want to reduce
There are two different connections to consider:
- Broadcaster upload: The data sent from your encoder or streaming setup to Castr. This is the relevant usage for a mobile or metered connection at the broadcast location.
- Castr player delivery: Data Castr uses to serve playback to viewers through its own player. This depends in part on bitrate, viewer count, and stream duration, and is separate from your encoder’s upload.
Castr describes multistreaming as sending one contribution feed to multiple services, including YouTube. Do not assume your source upload is multiplied by the number of destinations; the exact upload depends on the configuration.

Change encoder settings to use less upload data
1. Lower the video bitrate
Bitrate is the most direct setting to adjust: a lower bitrate sends less encoded video data per second. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 4 Mbps for the 240p–720p at 30 fps range. These are recommended encoder settings, not guarantees of the amount your carrier will bill. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Choose a bitrate that balances picture quality with the connection available. Lowering it too far can make detail harder to see or cause visible compression. The right setting depends on the resolution, frame rate, content, and stability of your upload connection.

2. Reduce resolution or frame rate when the bitrate is still too high
Resolution and frame rate affect how much bitrate is useful for acceptable picture quality. Lower resolution reduces fine image detail; lower frame rate can make fast motion look less smooth. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies across resolution and frame-rate combinations, so adjust them together rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
For example, if you do not need 1080p detail or 60 fps motion, try a lower resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding YouTube recommendation as a starting point. YouTube also transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers; your source upload setting is not the same thing as every viewer’s playback quality.

3. Stream for only the time you need
At a fixed bitrate, a longer broadcast sends more total data. End the stream when the program is over, and avoid leaving an encoder running unnecessarily. Duration can also affect Castr player-delivery bandwidth, but that is a different allocation from your outbound upload.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Approximate data in megabytes = bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8.
This estimates encoded video data and does not account for transport overhead, retries, carrier counting rules, or other traffic on the device or network. For instance, at a steady 4 Mbps for one hour, the calculation gives about 1,800 MB before those factors.

- Before the event, speed-test the upload connection. Select an encoder quality that fits the available upload capacity rather than setting quality by resolution alone.
- Run a test stream before the real broadcast. Check that the picture is acceptable and the connection remains stable at the chosen bitrate.
- While live, inspect Castr’s dashboard. Castr documents live display of bandwidth, viewers, bitrate, resolution, codec, and audio bitrate. Use those values to confirm the actual stream configuration instead of relying only on an encoder preset. See Castr’s live-stream setup guide.
- If the stream is unstable, lower settings in measured steps. Reduce bitrate first; if quality or stability still does not fit the connection, lower resolution or frame rate and test again.
YouTube recommends choosing a quality suited to the connection, checking upload speed, and testing before the broadcast. Its guidance is available in the encoder settings documentation and mobile live-streaming tips.

Keep broadcaster upload separate from viewer bandwidth
If you are concerned about the data viewers use or your Castr account’s player bandwidth allocation, changing your encoder upload is not the whole answer. Castr documents adaptive-bitrate renditions for its player, allowing playback to adjust to a viewer’s connection; available options and controls can depend on plan. Castr’s player bandwidth can rise with higher bitrate, more viewers, or longer duration. Check your current account and plan for its applicable allocation and overage behavior, because plan terms can change. See Castr’s transcoding information, Castr’s multi-CDN and live-streaming overview, and Castr’s bandwidth-overage documentation.
Troubleshoot high upload use or an unstable stream
- Data use is higher than expected: Check Castr’s live bitrate and broadcast duration. A higher bitrate or a longer stream increases the estimate; also remember that the calculation does not include carrier-specific accounting or all network overhead.
- Lower bitrate makes the picture look poor: Raise bitrate if your connection allows, or use a lower resolution or frame rate that better matches the desired quality.
- The stream drops or buffers after changing settings: Recheck upload capacity, select a more suitable quality, and test before the event. Avoid reducing settings blindly or choosing a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
- You are seeing Castr bandwidth warnings despite modest broadcaster upload: Confirm whether the concern is player delivery rather than the contribution feed. Viewer count, player bitrate, and duration can affect that separate usage.
