How to Show a Bible Verse Slide Between Recorded Sermons on YouTube Live

Keep one YouTube Live stream connected and switch what it shows: use one OBS scene for the recorded sermon and another for a Bible verse image or text. At the handoff, cut or fade to the verse scene, then switch to the next sermon when ready. Preview the feed and rehearse the sequence before the service.

What you need

  • A YouTube Live stream set up in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • An encoder such as OBS, connected with the stream URL and stream key.
  • The recorded sermon file and a prepared verse image, or the verse text to display in OBS.

YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream overlays and use audio hardware such as preamps; it does not make that hardware a requirement. The workflow below uses OBS sources and scenes, so a dedicated hardware encoder or scene controller is not inherently needed for the handoff.

Set up the sermon and verse scenes in OBS

1. Connect OBS to the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the stream.
  2. In OBS, enter the stream URL and stream key provided for that YouTube stream. Treat the key as private; anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
  3. Start the encoder and check the incoming feed in the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast.

2. Create a scene for each recorded sermon

  1. In OBS, add a scene for the sermon.
  2. Add a Media Source and select the recorded sermon file. OBS supports common video and audio formats; check that your particular file plays correctly in your setup.
  3. For a sermon intended to play once, leave looping off. If you want playback to start from the beginning whenever this scene becomes active, enable the option to restart playback when the source becomes active.
  4. Check both picture and sound in the OBS preview. File playback performance depends on your computer and media file, so test the actual recording rather than assuming it will run smoothly.

3. Create the Bible verse scene

  1. Add a separate scene for the verse.
  2. For a finished slide, add an Image source and choose the prepared image. For text you may want to edit in OBS, add a Text source and enter the verse.
  3. Check the verse in the preview at the stream’s output size. Confirm that the wording and reference are correct and readable against the background.

Switch scenes at the handoff

Keep the encoder connected; the handoff is a change in the scene OBS sends, not a need to start a new YouTube stream. Select the verse scene when the sermon ends, then select the next sermon scene when it is time to resume.

  • Manual selection: click the scene in OBS at the intended moment. This gives the operator direct control over timing.
  • Hotkey: assign a keyboard shortcut to the relevant scene if an operator needs to switch without selecting it in the scene list. Test the shortcut in advance to avoid accidental switches.
  • Cut: changes scenes immediately and is useful when the verse should appear as a direct handoff.
  • Fade: transitions gradually and may suit a more subdued service style. Check what happens to sermon audio during the transition.

OBS supports scene transitions such as Cut and Fade, as well as hotkeys. The right choice depends on the service’s style and the operator’s setup; there is no single required transition.

Preview and rehearse the full sequence

  1. Start OBS’s encoder output and wait for the incoming video to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview.
  2. Run the actual sequence: play the sermon, switch to the verse, and switch to the next sermon scene.
  3. Watch the Live Control Room preview as well as OBS. Confirm that the verse appears, the sermon picture returns as expected, and audio behaves correctly across each switch.
  4. Resolve any playback, layout, or audio issue and repeat the sequence before the service.

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends checking the Live Control Room preview and testing the setup. A successful OBS preview alone does not establish that the feed looks and sounds right in the YouTube preview.

Custom verse scene or YouTube’s break slate?

YouTube documents a temporary away slate for breaks through the Live Control Room and an encoder browser-source overlay workflow. That is suited to a generic break, not a purpose-built scripture scene. A custom OBS scene lets you control the verse wording, layout, and when it appears.

Troubleshoot common handoff problems

  • The verse does not appear on YouTube: confirm that OBS switched to the intended scene, then check the incoming Live Control Room preview. If OBS shows the slide but YouTube does not, verify that the encoder feed is still connected.
  • The sermon starts partway through: check the Media Source’s restart-when-active option, then test by leaving and returning to the scene.
  • The sermon repeats unexpectedly: check that looping is off for a segment meant to play once.
  • Audio cuts out or overlaps during a transition: rehearse the exact switch and inspect the source audio and transition behavior in OBS. Adjust the scene/source arrangement and test again.
  • The slide is difficult to read: review it in the stream preview at the actual output size and revise the image or text layout before going live.
  • The sermon file stutters or fails to play: test the specific file on the computer running OBS and address local playback or performance issues before the service; smooth playback cannot be assumed for every computer and file.

Copyright and content checks

Use sermon recordings and verse-slide material that you have permission to stream. YouTube’s encoder and scene documentation explains how to send and switch sources; it does not establish that a particular recording, music bed, image, or Bible translation is cleared for your use. Check the rights and applicable permissions for each item before broadcasting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded recordings, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams what you uploaded at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, so use OBS for a live-operated scene handoff such as choosing exactly when a verse slide appears.
