To use less mobile data while streaming with Larix Broadcaster, lower the video bitrate first. If that harms image quality or makes the stream unstable, reduce the output resolution or frame rate and test again. As a rough guide, a constant 1 Mbps uses about 450 MB of encoded data per hour; your phone’s total cellular usage can be higher.
How much data does a Larix YouTube stream use per hour?
For a constant bitrate, estimate encoded payload with this formula:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Data in MB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 450 × duration in hours
| Video bitrate | Estimated encoded payload per hour |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | About 450 MB |
| 2 Mbps | About 900 MB |
| 4 Mbps | About 1,800 MB (1.8 GB decimal) |
These are arithmetic estimates, not measurements of a mobile carrier’s billing. They exclude protocol overhead, retransmissions and other phone traffic; actual usage can also vary if the encoder’s bitrate fluctuates. If you stream at an average of 2 Mbps for one hour, for example, expect roughly 900 MB of encoded payload before those additions.

Change Larix settings to reduce upload data
Menu labels can vary by Larix version and operating system. Find the video or encoder settings and adjust the bitrate, resolution and frame rate available on your device.
- Start with the bitrate. Reduce the target video bitrate, then check the picture and connection stability. A lower bitrate sends less encoded video data, but can make detail look worse, especially in a busy or fast-moving scene.
- Lower resolution if needed. If the image is too degraded at a lower bitrate, try a lower output resolution and retest. A practical starting point is 720p at 30 fps, with a bitrate chosen for your actual scene and cellular connection.
- Reduce frame rate when the content allows it. For a mostly static talk or presentation, a lower frame rate may be acceptable. Fast movement generally needs more data to preserve smoothness and image quality. Larix uses the device’s system encoder, so a selected frame rate or range is not a guarantee of exact output.
- Use one destination. If you only intend to stream to YouTube, disable other Larix destinations. Beeline’s setup guide says Larix can stream to up to three destinations simultaneously; sending to additional destinations can increase outgoing traffic.
Balance Larix settings with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s H.264 encoder recommendations, on its help page accessed in 2026, are quality and ingest guidance—not a mobile-data-saving cap. The lower settings save data, but may fall below YouTube’s recommendations. Test the result rather than assuming a low bitrate will look acceptable or remain stable.
| YouTube ingest setting | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
YouTube also recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Audio can be AAC or MP3. Which options you can set depends on Larix and your device encoder. For the current details, see YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Understand Larix bitrate and adaptive settings
Bitrate targets depend on the phone
Larix says Android lets you type in a bitrate, while iOS offers predefined values and selects a default based on resolution. In either case, the device encoder uses the value as a target, not necessarily a strict ceiling. Larix notes that on Android, variable-bitrate quality-floor behavior can push the bitrate above a low target; a device with CBR support is needed to hold a low bitrate regardless of quality.
Larix’s resolution-based defaults are 4,500 Kbps at 2160p, 3,000 Kbps at 1080p, 2,000 Kbps at 720p, 1,500 Kbps at 540p, 1,000 Kbps at 480p, 700 Kbps at 360p, 500 Kbps at 288p and 300 Kbps at 144p. These are Larix defaults, not YouTube recommendations. Larix says HEVC multiplies those defaults by 0.5 and 50 fps or above multiplies them by 1.6.
Adaptive bitrate is not a data-plan limit
Larix offers adaptive-bitrate modes and variable FPS, but behavior differs by operating system, protocol and mode. Hybrid also considers latency for RTMP and RTSP. Larix lists Android Hybrid support only for SRT; on iOS, it lists RTMP, RTSP and SRT support. Do not assume a mode available on one setup behaves the same for a YouTube RTMP stream on another.

Adaptive bitrate can respond to network conditions, but it is not a monthly data cap: it may raise bitrate again when conditions improve. Check Larix’s available settings for your device and protocol before relying on it.

- Set the intended resolution, frame rate and bitrate in Larix.
- Run a short private or unlisted YouTube test over the same mobile connection you plan to use. Include audio and camera movement similar to the real broadcast.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and Larix session statistics, if available. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
- Estimate a longer session from the observed average bitrate using bitrate × 450 × hours, then compare with your phone’s mobile-data usage. The phone’s total can include other apps and network overhead.
- If the stream is unstable, test a lower resolution or frame rate, or a bitrate your uplink can sustain. Cellular upload capacity can change by location and time, so no single setting is guaranteed for every Indian network or broadcast.
Repeated reconnects may add traffic, although the extra amount is not quantified here. Check whether Larix is repeatedly reconnecting and close any unintended parallel destinations.
