In OBS, enable Loop on the clip’s Media Source; then test hardware decoding for the clip, switch from x264 to a compatible hardware encoder if encoding is the bottleneck, and simplify demanding scenes. These changes affect different parts of the workload, so check performance on your own system rather than expecting a guaranteed reduction.
Find which part of OBS is using resources
Looping a video is not, by itself, proof that video playback is the cause of high CPU use. OBS requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Diagnose the workload before changing settings: playback decoding handles the clip, stream encoding prepares the outgoing video, and scene composition renders the sources together.

- Playback or decoding: the local clip is difficult for the system to decode smoothly.
- Encoding: OBS is using x264, its CPU-based software encoder, or an encoder setting the machine cannot comfortably handle.
- Scene rendering: browser sources, effects or many active sources are taxing the graphics processor.
Change one relevant setting at a time and compare CPU use and playback stability under similar conditions. Official OBS guidance does not publish a loop-specific CPU benchmark or a guaranteed saving.
Set up the video loop and test decoding
Enable Loop on the Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that contains the video.
- Add a local-file Media Source, or select the existing one, and open its properties.
- Choose the video file and enable Loop. OBS replays the file when playback reaches its end.
- Keep the scene active and watch for smooth playback as the clip reaches the end and starts again.
Try hardware decoding separately
The Media Source properties also include Use hardware decoding when available. Try this if the computer’s GPU has a suitable decoder for the clip, then compare CPU use and playback stability with the option off. Decoding support depends on the GPU and file; enabling this option does not guarantee lower CPU use for every system or codec. It also does not change which encoder OBS uses for the outgoing stream. Reduce CPU load from stream encoding
If OBS is using x264 and encoding appears to be the bottleneck, try a compatible hardware encoder. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it moves encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Hardware decoding of the clip and hardware encoding of the stream are separate controls: one being available or enabled says nothing about the other.

In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the encoder selected for streaming. If x264 is selected, choose a hardware encoder that is actually available on your system, then test the stream. Encoder generations can differ in output quality at a given bitrate, so compare the result at your intended resolution and bitrate rather than assuming every hardware encoder will look identical. A GPU purchase is not required just to loop a file. First check whether your existing hardware exposes a suitable encoder; an upgrade is relevant only if the present system lacks a compatible option or cannot meet the workload.
Lower scene-rendering demands
If encoding and playback are not the main problem, reduce the work in the active scene. OBS warns that browser sources can use substantial resources and that rendering depends on GPU resources.

- Remove browser sources that are not needed in the live scene, or reduce their dimensions and complexity.
- Use an image source for a static overlay instead of a browser source where appropriate.
- Use Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio rather than building a more resource-intensive arrangement.
- Reduce unnecessary effects and active sources, then test again.
These changes target scene composition; they do not necessarily reduce the decoding work of the main video or the CPU cost of x264. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide covers scene and source adjustments.
Keep YouTube ingest settings valid
Reducing CPU use does not mean raising bitrate. Choose YouTube’s encoder settings for the intended codec, resolution and frame rate, and use a rate the internet connection can sustain. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution and frame rate.

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest rates, not CPU measurements. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the selected codec and output format; the page’s recommendations can vary as guidance is updated.

- Use Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard in OBS if you need help choosing a starting configuration. OBS notes that demands depend on encoder, resolution, FPS and scene complexity; retain defaults unless you have a reason to change them.
- Run a test with movement and audio similar to the actual broadcast. A static test image may not reveal the same playback or encoding load.
- Check CPU use, playback smoothness and stream health, and verify that the stream meets YouTube’s ingest requirements.
- If performance worsens after a change, revert that setting and test the next relevant workload area separately.
OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting aid, and YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health before and during a broadcast.
