If you do not want a computer running at home, a cloud service is a better fit. YouTube lists cloud options for continuous prerecorded streams, but it does not rank them or independently establish their reliability.
A YouTube playlist is not itself a live broadcast. A playlist repeats for an individual viewer; to make prerecorded videos appear as a continuous live stream, an encoder or cloud service has to send a live feed to YouTube.

How to set up a local YouTube stream from a Mac
This is the encoder-based workflow: OBS is the local software candidate, while YouTube provides the destination details. The exact OBS labels, macOS compatibility, and playlist-source steps can vary by version and are not established here; use the current OBS help for your installed version rather than assuming a particular menu or source type.
- Prepare the content. Make sure the video files you intend to broadcast are available to the Mac and to the playback method you plan to use. Check that you have the right to stream each item. Do not assume that pasting a YouTube playlist URL into OBS is an officially supported way to play it.
- Set up a YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it authorizes a connection to your stream.
- Configure OBS as the encoder. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in OBS’s streaming configuration. Follow the current OBS and YouTube instructions for your installed versions; do not substitute an HLS address or unrelated playback URL for the encoder destination.
- Add and test playback. Configure a source that can play your local prerecorded material, then test a short private or unlisted stream before making the broadcast public. Confirm picture, sound, sequence, and whether playback returns to the beginning as expected. A working local playback test is not proof that the stream will remain uninterrupted for days.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Start streaming from OBS and check YouTube’s live control room for an incoming feed and any warnings. For continuous operation, keep the Mac awake and connected, keep the source files accessible, and monitor power, network and playback.
Choosing an ingest protocol
YouTube documents RTMP setup and also supports HLS ingestion. HLS has higher latency than RTMP and requires the specified segment and rolling-playlist configuration. It is an ingestion protocol, not a playlist manager; do not choose HLS simply because your content is a playlist. Use it only when your encoder workflow calls for it and you can meet YouTube’s documented configuration requirements.

What 24/7 operation means on a Mac
A local encoder leaves the stream dependent on your computer and its environment. A restart, sleep setting, unavailable source file, power interruption or lost network connection can stop the feed. YouTube’s encoder approach requires the encoder to send the stream; it does not make a home computer or connection redundant. Treat uninterrupted operation as an ongoing operational responsibility, not a guarantee provided by the software.
- Keep the Mac awake for the intended broadcast period and prevent routine updates or scheduled shutdowns from interrupting it.
- Keep the video files and playback source available throughout the stream; test a full playlist cycle rather than only the opening minutes.
- Check the network and YouTube’s incoming-stream status, and have a plan to restart the encoder if the feed drops.
- Decide how you will handle changes to the playlist or source files. The current supported behavior for modifying an OBS playlist during a live stream should be verified for your specific setup.
Stream length, archives and content rights
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated duration, so do not count on YouTube automatically saving the entire continuous stream as one replay under that rule. If you need a complete recording, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify current YouTube behavior before relying on it.
