The biggest CPU saving usually comes from not encoding the video again. If your file’s video and audio codecs are compatible with YouTube’s ingest and your chosen output, use FFmpeg stream copy (-c copy) instead of a software encoder such as libx264. Stream copy avoids the video-encoding workload, but it cannot resize, filter, or convert an incompatible stream. First inspect your file, then test the full stream and monitor both VPS load and YouTube stream health.
Find out what is using CPU before changing the command
Measure the FFmpeg process while it is running and inspect the input file’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio streams, and container. The result determines whether stream copy is possible. High CPU alone does not identify the cause: the VPS allocation, software encoding settings, and any filters can all matter. There is no universal CPU-saving percentage for a particular command or VPS.

FFmpeg describes transcoding as decoding and then encoding; encoding can be computationally expensive. Its guidance is to transcode only when necessary and otherwise use stream copy. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Use stream copy when the source already fits
When the source streams are acceptable to YouTube and compatible with the output muxer and protocol, -c copy passes the encoded streams through without re-encoding. This is the most direct way to reduce CPU usage caused by video encoding on a VPS.

- It can help when: you do not need to resize, add filters or overlays, change frame rate, or convert the codecs.
- It will not do those transformations: filters and codec incompatibility are reasons to transcode instead.
- Audio may need separate treatment: if only the audio is incompatible, you may be able to copy the video and encode audio alone, but validate the input and output compatibility before relying on that approach.
Stream copy does not mean the VPS does no work at all: FFmpeg still reads, demuxes, and sends the media. Its benefit is avoiding video decoding and encoding when neither is needed for a transformation.
Loop and pace the file correctly
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 loops an input indefinitely; 0 means no looping. -re reads a file at its native frame rate, equivalent to a read rate of 1, and is useful when packet timing matters for live streaming. Put input options before the -i they apply to.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmps://DESTINATION/STREAM_KEY
FFmpeg documents the options in its command-line documentation. In a real setup, use the RTMPS destination and stream-key handling shown for your YouTube encoder configuration. Do not expose the key in a public script, shell history, logs, terminal recording, or screenshot. Treat it like a password; if it leaks, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
-re is about real-time pacing, not CPU reduction. If the command still re-encodes, adding -re does not remove the encoding workload.

If you must re-encode, reduce work without breaking the stream
Some sources need conversion, resizing, frame-rate changes, or filters. In that case, keep the transformation you need and tune the encoder deliberately. Lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce work, but it also changes the viewing experience; the effect on CPU depends on the codec, settings, content, and VPS allocation. Measure your own process rather than assuming a fixed reduction.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Choose a bitrate appropriate to the output codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Its figures for H.264 include:
| Output | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingest settings, not CPU benchmarks or promises of image quality for every source. Check the full, current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance before selecting settings for a different codec or output.

Test the stream and check network headroom
- Start with a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and confirm the video and audio play correctly through a complete loop.
- Watch the FFmpeg process and VPS resource use while it runs. Check whether stream copy actually removed the encoder workload or whether a conversion or filter is still active.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. A low-CPU stream can still fail because of a codec, keyframe, bitrate, or network issue.
- Check the VPS’s available outbound bandwidth under sustained load. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; that is network guidance, not a CPU target.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring stream health. A short successful start does not by itself establish that a long-running loop will remain healthy.
Troubleshoot common CPU and streaming problems
- CPU remains high with
-c copy: confirm the running command actually uses stream copy for video and does not include a filter or other operation that forces decoding. Check whether audio is being encoded separately. If no encoding remains, inspect VPS contention and resource allocation rather than expecting-reto lower CPU. - FFmpeg rejects stream copy or YouTube does not accept the output: the source codec, audio, container, or muxer may be incompatible. Use an appropriate conversion only for the incompatible stream or choose a source that already fits; stream copy cannot convert codecs or apply filters.
- Video or audio behaves incorrectly at the loop boundary: test the actual file through a full repeat. A command that starts successfully may still reveal timing or compatibility issues when the input loops.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: check the ingest settings, bitrate for the selected codec and resolution, keyframe interval, and sustained upload capacity. Leave the recommended network headroom and review YouTube’s health messages.
- The stream stops after an interruption: distinguish an FFmpeg process exit from a dropped network or YouTube connection. Review the process and YouTube messages, then test the recovery behavior you plan to rely on; do not assume a VPS or command automatically reconnects in every failure case.
Other ways to handle encoding or continuous streaming
If stream copy is not viable, software re-encoding on the VPS remains the flexible option for conversion and filters, but its CPU demand depends on the workload and VPS. Hardware encoding may move work to a supported device, but only if your provider exposes compatible hardware and your FFmpeg build supports it; a VPS does not necessarily include a usable GPU. YouTube lists NVIDIA NVENC among hardware-encoding options and names Gyre and Upstream.so in its guidance for continuous streaming. Their listing is not a guarantee of CPU savings, pricing, or suitability for every prerecorded-video workflow. Confirm current capabilities and terms directly. See YouTube’s encoder and service guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is an alternative to managing a looping FFmpeg process on your VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs the loop in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality-based tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera streaming.
