How to Reduce CPU Usage in Chrome Without Closing Important Tabs

Use Chrome Task Manager to identify the CPU-heavy task, then manage background activity while preserving the sites you need.

Start by finding the specific Chrome tab, extension, or background task using the CPU—don’t close important tabs at random. Chrome’s built-in Task Manager shows CPU use and lets you target a single task. For background tabs, Performance settings can help you balance lower resource use with keeping selected sites active.

Find out which Chrome task is using the CPU

Open Chrome’s built-in Task Manager from More tools > Task Manager. Check the CPU column to see whether a tab, extension, or background task stands out. This is more useful than judging Chrome’s total process count: one renderer can be responsible for one or more tabs or extensions.

If a specific task is responsible, save any unsent forms or other work in that tab before ending it. Google warns that “Any unsaved work in your task will be lost.” Select only the identified task and choose End process if you’re ready to stop it. If an extension appears responsible, review it at More tools > Extensions and turn off or remove extensions you don’t want.

Google’s CPU-process troubleshooting instructions are specifically for managed Chrome on Windows, while Task Manager is a built-in Chrome feature. Menu labels and availability can vary by Chrome version and operating system.

Keep important sites active while Chrome manages other tabs

Open Settings > Performance to review Memory Saver. It is primarily a memory-management feature: it deactivates eligible tabs you are not using, and “When you access an inactive tab, it automatically reloads.” It is not a guaranteed CPU fix, but it can reduce background activity for eligible tabs while leaving other tabs available to reload when needed.

Set how aggressively inactive tabs are deactivated

Memory Saver offers Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum levels. Moderate waits longer before deactivating tabs; Maximum deactivates them sooner. Add sites you need to remain active to Always keep these sites active. This lets Chrome preserve activity for selected sites while deactivating other eligible inactive tabs; it does not promise every tab will remain live.

Use Energy Saver when its battery conditions fit

Energy Saver is intended to reduce power use, and can also help with eligible CPU-intensive background tabs while it is active. Google says it reduces image capture rate and other background tasks; when on, it stops eligible CPU-intensive background tabs. It operates automatically when the computer is unplugged or its battery is low, and Google lists support for Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices with a battery.

Video-conferencing and audio-playback tabs are not affected. Gaming and video performance may change, so Energy Saver may be a poor fit if smooth foreground graphics matter more than battery life. Chrome also lets you temporarily resume background updates for an individual session.

If CPU use remains high, use the process as a clue

When a setting change does not explain the problem, inspect the operating system’s process manager as well. Google’s guidance for managed Chrome on Microsoft Windows describes using Windows Task Manager or another process manager to identify high-CPU Chrome processes. Its process clues are diagnostic possibilities, not a universal explanation for every computer:

  • Main process: Slow disk access or insufficient system memory can contribute to main-process slowdown.

Try focused supporting steps, not a blanket cleanup

Google’s general Chrome speed guidance also recommends keeping Chrome updated, turning off or removing unwanted extensions, stopping unwanted resource-heavy tasks in Task Manager, and adjusting page preloading in Performance settings. It also suggests avoiding multiple apps running at once and treats resetting Chrome settings as a later option. These steps may help when they match the task or conditions you found; none is a universal CPU remedy.

Closing tabs can be useful when a page is failing to load because of memory pressure, but that is a different symptom from high CPU use. Diagnose the CPU-consuming task first so you can preserve tabs that matter.

Choose the option that matches the symptom

Option Best fit Trade-off
Chrome Task Manager A particular tab, extension, or background task is using CPU. Ending a task can discard unsaved work.
Memory Saver You want Chrome to deactivate eligible inactive tabs to save memory while exempting important sites. Accessing a deactivated tab reloads it; it is not a guaranteed CPU fix.
Energy Saver You are on a supported battery-powered device and want to reduce power use and eligible background CPU activity. It depends on battery conditions; gaming and video performance may change.
Extension, update, or preload review The task or your usage points to an unwanted extension, outdated Chrome, or page preloading. These are targeted troubleshooting steps, not a cure for every cause.
