Disable optional apps you do not need as soon as you sign in—especially enabled items Task Manager labels High impact. But that label describes activity during startup, not an app’s continuous CPU use. To find what is consuming CPU after sign-in, check Task Manager’s Processes or Performance view, then disable only launches that are unnecessary for your routine.
How to choose which startup apps to disable
There is no universal list: the right choice depends on what you use and which features need to work immediately. Microsoft recommends disabling apps you do not need to start automatically; startup apps can slow boot and increase background activity. Treat app categories below as prompts to review, not automatic instructions.
- Often worth reviewing: optional app launchers, chat or meeting clients, game launchers, media helpers, cloud utilities you do not need to sync immediately, and vendor convenience utilities whose features you do not use.
- Keep enabled when you rely on the immediate function: apps or utilities needed for accessibility, input devices, audio, security, backup, or hardware features. An unfamiliar name is a reason to check its publisher and purpose before changing it—not to disable it blindly.
For each item, weigh its Task Manager impact label against whether you need its function at sign-in, whether delaying it could interrupt notifications, syncing, backup, security, accessibility, or hardware features, and whether it is actually using CPU after startup.
Disable an app through Windows settings
Windows 10 and Windows 11 both provide built-in controls for startup apps. Choose either interface:

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then select Startup apps. Select an app and choose Disable.
- Alternatively, open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off the app you want to stop launching automatically.
Microsoft documents both routes in its startup-app configuration guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
What the High impact label means—and what it does not
Task Manager’s startup impact is a prioritization aid based on an app’s CPU and disk activity during startup. High impact is a sensible reason to inspect an item, not an automatic command to disable it. The label does not tell you whether the app continues to consume CPU later in the session. Microsoft’s technical thresholds are scoped to Windows 8, and its current support guidance uses somewhat different boundaries, so exact cutoffs should not be treated as universal across current Windows versions. To investigate sustained CPU use, open Task Manager’s Processes or Performance view while the problem is occurring. A startup app might be contributing background activity, but persistent high CPU can have other causes, including an active process, updates, or malware. Microsoft recommends checking resource use and considering other performance issues rather than assuming startup impact explains them. Its Windows performance guidance discusses these checks.
Check the result and restore anything you still need
- Disable one or a small number of optional apps, then restart Windows.
- When CPU usage would normally be high, check Task Manager > Processes or Performance again. This lets you see whether the symptom changed; no particular CPU reduction is guaranteed.
- If a notification, sync, or device feature you depend on stops working, return to the Startup page and enable the app again.
Startup launch and background permissions are separate controls. For supported apps, background permissions are under Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [app] > Advanced options. Microsoft notes that this Windows background-app control does not govern desktop apps; those may have their own settings. Details are in Microsoft’s guidance on background apps and privacy.

If an app is missing from the startup list
Some apps launch through a Startup folder shortcut instead of appearing in the usual Settings or Task Manager list. Microsoft documents these folder shortcuts:
- Press Windows key+R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter to open the current user’s Startup folder. - Use
shell:common startupto open the Startup folder shared by all users.
Check whether the app has a shortcut there before making other changes. Registry entries can also affect startup, but registry edits can have unintended consequences; they are not a routine first step for trimming startup apps.

When a clean boot is appropriate
A clean boot is a temporary troubleshooting method for isolating software conflicts, not the usual way to remove a few unnecessary startup launches. Microsoft advises tracking changes and warns that some functionality may be temporarily unavailable while troubleshooting. Use its clean-boot procedure when you are investigating a conflict, rather than as a routine startup cleanup.
Windows 10 support status
The configuration steps remain documented for Windows 10 and Windows 11, but that does not change support status: Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Startup configuration is separate from the question of whether an operating system is still supported.
