The biggest savings usually come from running only what your workflow needs: one encoder sending one feed to YouTube, at a resolution and bitrate suited to the content. YouTube creates viewer formats from the incoming live stream, so a small encoder does not need to build a separate set of renditions first. Before estimating a monthly bill, distinguish that setup from a full streaming stack that also packages and delivers video to viewers.
Start by identifying what the server actually does
A cloud server used only to play a playlist, encode it, and send a single live feed to YouTube has a different cost profile from a system that encodes, packages, and distributes video directly to viewers. Do not use a viewer-delivery estimate as though it were the price of a YouTube encoder.

- Single-feed encoder: compute runs the playlist and encoder; the output goes to YouTube ingest.
- Streaming and delivery stack: services may encode and package the video, then deliver it to viewers. This includes components that a YouTube-ingest-only setup may not need.
Decide whether a cloud host is necessary for your workflow at all. If you already have suitable infrastructure that can run continuously, using it may avoid adding a cloud instance; the sources cited here do not establish a general cost comparison between local hardware and cloud hosting.
Lower the encoding workload without sacrificing needed quality
Choose an appropriate output resolution and frame rate
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings to select a bitrate range for the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to stream. Higher output settings can require more encoder resources and network capacity. Avoid choosing a higher resolution or bitrate than the material and intended audience need.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Use the documented encoder settings
- YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for live input, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Its guidance lists constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health before relying on a lower-cost configuration.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Its encoder guidance says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” For RTMPS, use the correct protocol, endpoint, stream path, and port 443, as described in Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
Do not create viewer renditions without a reason
YouTube automatically detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming live stream into output formats for viewers. Unless your particular workflow requires otherwise, avoid paying to generate multiple versions before sending the feed to YouTube.

- Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
- Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
- Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, which requires a conforming media playlist and segments and a single encoded stream at the highest resolution you intend to serve. Its guide notes that HLS usually has higher latency than RTMP- and WebRTC-based ingestion. Use that route only if your encoder or workflow needs it; it is not a default cost-saving replacement for RTMPS.
Estimate the real always-on bill
There is no defensible generic monthly price for a continuously running cloud VM that only sends one playlist feed to YouTube. A useful estimate must specify the provider, region, instance or encoder type, output bitrate, schedule, and applicable network billing. Include only components your setup actually uses.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Compute or VM charges for the always-on encoder.
- Storage for playlist files, if they are stored in the cloud.
- Network transfer, checked against the provider’s current rules for the chosen region and destination.
- Monitoring, restart tooling, or managed encoding and packaging, if used.
These are planning categories, not a tariff. Cloud prices and network terms vary by provider and region; price the specific configuration you intend to run rather than multiplying a generic rate into a promised monthly total.
Compare like with like
AWS publishes an example of approximately $69.74 for a one-hour event serving approximately 1,000 viewers at SD-540p: about $2.50 for live encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for 791 GB of distribution in US East (N. Virginia). That example describes viewer distribution using AWS’s live streaming solution, not a monthly cost for one encoder feed sent to YouTube. AWS says the estimate depends on solution revision and region, so check its Live Streaming on AWS pricing example and current pricing before using it in a comparison.

Control operational costs and interruptions
A lower instance price is not the only cost consideration for an always-on stream. Account for whether the playlist resumes after a failure, how you will detect an interruption, and what a stream outage means for your channel. Test the full setup and monitor YouTube stream health before depending on it. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring; it does not make a particular low-cost server configuration reliable by itself.

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for prerecorded video playback, not camera streaming.
