You can run a continuous YouTube livestream of a podcast archive by hosting an encoder such as FFmpeg on an always-on VPS, connecting it to a YouTube Live event with that event’s ingest URL and stream key, and configuring the encoder to play the archive at real-time speed. YouTube Studio creates and manages the viewer-facing event; the VPS runs the media process. This is a deployment pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is able to livestream. Confirm the channel’s current live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio; eligibility and monetization status are channel-specific.
- A VPS that can stay online and run your chosen encoder, with enough CPU capacity, storage, and network transfer for your media and output format. No universal VPS size or price is established for this workload, so measure the actual configuration you plan to use.
- FFmpeg or another encoder that supports the ingest protocol YouTube provides. FFmpeg’s documentation describes support for RTMP; verify the particular build and output settings you intend to use.
- The podcast files, an explicit play order or playlist, and a plan for what viewers should see while audio plays, such as a static image or a prepared video.
- Permission to livestream every episode and any included music, clips, artwork, or other third-party material. Rights and monetization eligibility must be checked for your channel and content; repeated playback of an archive is not automatically cleared or guaranteed to qualify for monetization.
For encoder settings such as codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval, follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the selected ingest type and validate your chosen profile in Live Control Room. These depend on the source and output you choose; do not assume that a setting suitable for one archive or VPS will suit another.

Prepare the podcast archive
Inventory and order the episodes
List the files in the sequence you want to play them. Decide whether the stream should move through the archive once, repeat a playlist, or restart from the beginning after the last item. Make that behavior explicit in the encoder’s playlist or process configuration rather than relying on an undocumented default.
Choose how to present audio
YouTube Live expects an audio/video feed from the encoder. If the archive contains audio only, decide what visual output to pair with it, such as a static image or prepared video. Check that the image and audio behave as intended across file transitions, and listen for gaps, clipping, or synchronization problems in a real preview.

Check rights and channel suitability
Review the rights for each episode and all embedded third-party material before broadcasting. YouTube’s encoder instructions note that live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program, but that does not determine rights for a particular episode or whether a repeatedly played archive meets applicable reused-content or monetization rules.
Create the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create a stream or open the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling can provide a viewer-facing event to promote and let viewers set reminders.
- In Live Control Room, copy the event’s stream URL (ingest endpoint) and stream key. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, source control, and logs.
- Keep the event open in Live Control Room so you can verify the incoming preview after starting the VPS encoder.
YouTube distinguishes the broadcast—the event viewers watch—from the stream, which carries the encoder’s audio/video feed and settings. A running encoder does not create the viewer-facing event by itself. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes broadcasts and streams as separate resources that can be associated.

Run FFmpeg from the VPS
Install and stage the media
Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate for the VPS operating system, then place the archive files and playlist where the service account running the encoder can read them. Check available disk space and confirm the files play locally through the chosen FFmpeg build before connecting to YouTube.
Configure the encoder process
Configure FFmpeg to read the selected file or playlist, produce the chosen audio/video output at real-time speed, and send it to the exact ingest endpoint and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Implement looping or playlist progression deliberately. The appropriate codec, bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, and video treatment depend on the media and current YouTube encoder requirements; validate them against YouTube’s guidance rather than copying settings intended for a different source.

For secure ingest, use RTMPS when supported by your encoder. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; its instructions specify the RTMPS endpoint, application path, and port 443. Use the exact endpoint components YouTube supplies—an incorrect scheme, path, or port can prevent connection.
Make the process recoverable
Run the encoder under a service manager or equivalent supervision so it can restart after an unexpected exit or VPS reboot. Add a way to notice a failed process or lost feed, such as health checks and alerts, and document how to restart it. A restart policy cannot guarantee uninterrupted playback, so test failure recovery and inspect the feed rather than assuming it works.

Connect, verify, and go live
- Start the encoder on the VPS and watch its output for connection errors.
- In Live Control Room, confirm YouTube receives the feed and displays a preview.
- For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when prompted.
- Use a separate viewer session to check audible sound, episode order, playback stability, and the intended visual presentation.
- Test a file transition and the configured loop behavior before treating the setup as ready for unattended operation.
If the feed does not connect, verify the stream key and complete ingest endpoint first, then check the RTMPS scheme, application path, and port if using RTMPS. If YouTube receives a feed but the preview is wrong, inspect the encoder’s selected files, output profile, and audio/video synchronization.

YouTube’s automatic-archive statement is specifically for streams under 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, design event lengths and restart or scheduling behavior around that limit, then confirm the resulting archive in Studio.

VPS costs vary by provider, region, plan, storage, and network-transfer allowance; no universal resource minimum or provider price is established for this use. Compare sustained CPU capacity, storage, transfer limits, region, and support terms, then measure the chosen encoder profile while it is running. Include the time needed to monitor the process and recover from failures in your operating-cost estimate.
