On a computer, turn on Memory Saver in Chrome’s Settings > Performance to deactivate eligible tabs you are not using. Close tabs you no longer need, review memory-heavy tasks and unused extensions, and consider reducing page preloading. Startup settings are separate: they determine which pages open when Chrome launches, not whether inactive tabs are deactivated.
Turn on Memory Saver in Chrome
In Chrome on a computer, open More > Settings > Performance, turn on Memory Saver, then choose a level. Chrome deactivates eligible inactive tabs and reloads them when you return. Google Chrome Help describes the behavior this way: “When you access an inactive tab, it automatically reloads.” (Google Chrome Help: Personalize Chrome performance.)

Choose a level based on how quickly you want Chrome to deactivate unused tabs. Google does not publish exact waiting times or guaranteed RAM savings for these choices.
| Memory Saver level | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Moderate | Tabs stay active longer before deactivation; Google describes the savings as moderate. |
| Balanced (recommended) | Google’s recommended middle setting. |
| Maximum | Tabs are deactivated after a shorter period; Google describes this as the maximum-savings setting. |
More aggressive deactivation can mean more reloads when you return to tabs. A reload may interrupt what you were doing on a page, so choose a setting that suits your work rather than assuming the most aggressive option is always best.

Keep selected sites active
To exempt a site, use Settings > Performance > Always keep these sites active and add it to the list. Some tabs may remain active even without an exemption: Google lists audio or video playback, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially filled forms, pinned tabs, and connected USB or Bluetooth devices as examples of activity that can prevent deactivation.
Find and close unnecessary tabs or tasks
Closing tabs you no longer need is the simplest way to remove their open pages from the session. If Chrome still seems to be using substantial memory, check which browser task is responsible before ending anything.

- Open More > More tools > Task Manager.
- Select the Memory column heading to sort tasks by memory use.
- Review the list, including background pages. End only a task you recognize and no longer need; ending a task can discard unsaved work.
These are Google’s general Chrome troubleshooting steps; a particular tab or task is not necessarily the cause of every memory problem. (Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.)
Review extensions and page preloading
Disable extensions you do not use
Open More > Extensions > Manage Extensions and turn off or remove extensions you no longer need. Google recommends this as a general troubleshooting measure. It is not a guarantee that disabling an extension will resolve a memory issue.

Choose how Chrome preloads pages
Go to Settings > Performance > Preload pages to review the available preloading choice. Chrome preloads pages a user might visit to make browsing and searching faster. You can turn preloading off or choose a lighter option if you prefer less preloading activity; Google does not quantify how much memory this change saves. Treat it as a speed-versus-preloading preference, not a guaranteed RAM fix. (Google Chrome Help: Speed up Google Chrome.)
Understand what startup settings do
On a computer, Chrome’s startup setting controls which page or pages appear when the browser launches. The homepage is different: it opens when you use the Home control. To restore the pages that were open when you last quit Chrome, choose More > Settings > On startup > Continue where you left off. (Google Chrome Help: Set your homepage and startup page.)

Restoring a session and freeing memory are separate behaviors. Continue where you left off chooses which pages reopen; Memory Saver deactivates eligible inactive tabs. The startup setting may reopen a collection of tabs, but Google’s guidance does not say that it directly reduces or increases memory use. If you want fewer pages to reopen, choose a different startup option; use Memory Saver and tab management to manage inactive pages.
Availability and managed devices
Google says Performance settings cannot be personalized in Chrome on Android or iOS, so these Memory Saver instructions apply to computers. On a work or school device, an administrator may manage Chrome’s memory behavior. Google’s enterprise documentation describes a policy that can set a browser-session memory limit before tabs start closing automatically, and notes that high-efficiency mode is available on ChromeOS and Chrome browser for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Where users are allowed to control it, the setting can be switched at chrome://settings/performance. (Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help: Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.)
