Can a delisted digital game still have a physical copy?

Sony announced on July 1, 2026, that production of discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting January 2028. Sony’s Sid Shuman said: “This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.” This concerns production for new releases, not whether a particular older copy is currently for sale or what its resale market will be. How to search for a physical copy
- Search the exact title with format terms. Try the title plus “PS5 disc,” “PS4 disc,” and “physical edition.” If there are multiple releases, include the publisher or edition name.
- Check more than one kind of seller. Look at used-game retailers, local game shops, and marketplace listings. Compare the platform, edition, condition, return terms, shipping, and total cost across listings.
- Confirm a disc release exists. A delisted digital listing does not mean a physical edition was made. Check the title and edition shown in the listing rather than assuming a disc exists.
- Inspect what is actually included. Read the description and review photos. Make sure the offer includes the game disc, not only a box, digital code, or collectible edition without the game.
- Check title-specific requirements. Find out whether the game depends on downloads, online services, or codes, and whether any included code is usable. Requirements vary by title and listing.
- Compare the complete purchase cost. Account for shipping and the seller’s return policy as well as the asking price. Rare or collector editions may cost more; no current price or inventory is guaranteed.
Will the disc work on your PS5?
A disc-drive PS5 can play PS5 and PS4 game discs. Sony says the PS5 Digital Edition plays digital games only and has no disc drive, so it cannot use PS4 discs. Buying a PS5 disc
Check that the listing identifies the PS5 version and includes its game disc. Do not treat a PS4 copy as the PS5 edition just because it may run on a PS5.
Buying a PS4 disc to play on PS5
Sony says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games work on PS5, but some do not. Its compatibility page lists these PS4-only titles: Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, and Shadwen. Sony notes that the list can change, so check the live page for the title you plan to buy. Sony also reports that more than 99 percent of the 4,000+ games available on PS4 are playable on PS5; this general statistic is not a guarantee for an individual title or a disc-drive-free console. For a PS4 disc, the disc must stay inserted each time you play, and a game update may be required. If you are relying on a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade, check the individual game’s terms: some upgrades are available and may require an internet connection or an additional purchase.
