Reduce a cellular data logger’s power use by measuring its complete operating cycle, then shortening avoidable radio, sensor and processing work without violating measurement, alarm or reachability requirements. A modem’s sleep-current specification is not a battery-life estimate: energy used during wake-up, cell search, registration, transfer and connected idle time can dominate the logger’s average.
Why a full-cycle energy budget matters
A logger’s consumption is the sum of distinct loads: controller sleep, sensor power and settling, measurement and processing, modem startup and network search, transmit and receive, and any time the modem remains connected after data transfer. Measure or estimate each part over a representative period; peak current alone does not reveal how much energy a reporting schedule uses.
Radio activity can draw far more current than sleep, but the average depends on communication frequency, payload size, protocol, cellular technology, coverage and network behavior. Nordic notes that an nRF9160 development kit can range from a few microamperes in sleep to hundreds of milliamperes with its radio active; that is a board-specific example, not a universal logger specification. Nordic’s radio-focused low-power design guide discusses these workload factors.
Measure a representative logger cycle
Record the requirements first
Write down the logger’s measurement interval, upload interval, alarm-delivery limit, need for inbound commands, expected payload and protocol, sensor warm-up or settling time, battery type and capacity, operating temperature, and expected coverage. Note whether the unit is stationary or mobile and whether it must remain reachable between reports. These constraints define which power-saving changes are acceptable.

Capture all operating phases
Use a current profiler or another suitable measurement setup to record quiescent sleep, sensor power-up and settling, acquisition, controller work, modem startup or cell search, registration, transmission, reception, connected time after transfer, and periodic network updates. Integrate current over a representative interval to compare energy, rather than judging by peaks alone. If the modem exposes PSM timers or radio resource control (RRC) state, record those with the trace.
Nordic’s documented workflow is to model the use case, take real-time measurements with its Power Profiler Kit II, then tune the model against measured results. Its Online Power Profiler is specific to the nRF9160 DK; neither tool substitutes for validation on the intended logger and network. Nordic’s cellular power-profiling guide describes the workflow and its coverage caveats.

Reduce radio energy without breaking reachability
Choose PSM or eDRX for the required response time
Power Saving Mode (PSM) permits deep sleep without regular paging reception. Extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX) checks for paging less often while retaining periodic opportunities to receive downlink traffic. A device asleep between paging occasions is not immediately reachable, so choose timers against the maximum acceptable delay for alarms and commands. Nordic’s PSM and eDRX documentation explains the modes and their reachability trade-off.
A PSM request does not establish that the device entered PSM. Carrier or roaming support and successful selection of a suitable cell matter. Confirm the granted modem or network state and timers; if the device repeatedly searches, investigate coverage and registration behavior instead of assuming the requested mode is active.

Reduce connected time after transfers
Where modem, protocol and network support it, Release Assistance Indication (RAI) can tell the network that the device has no further immediate data to send. Nordic documents an RRC inactivity timer range of 5 to 60 seconds and gives an illustrative reduction of around 60% with AS-RAI. Both figures describe Nordic’s documented examples; actual behavior and savings depend on network conditions and configuration, so measure on the target carrier.
Batch reports and avoid unnecessary link activity
If the application allows the delay, send several readings together rather than repeatedly paying connection and protocol overhead. Remove unnecessary keepalives, repeated connection setup and downlink checks. More bytes, more frequent link use, reconnect behavior and network policy all affect the outcome, so compare energy per reporting cycle against the required latency and data-loss tolerance rather than assuming batching always wins.

Consider offline operation when connectivity is not needed
For long periods with no requirement for network access, check whether the modem supports an offline or shutdown state. Nordic discusses offline mode as an option when PSM is unavailable. It can avoid some connected or search activity, but gives up immediate reachability; confirm behavior with the modem documentation and carrier before using it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reduce sensor, sampling and polling overhead
Measure sensor consumption independently, including warm-up, conversion, interface pull-ups and external voltage conversion. A sensor rail can use more energy than a sleeping controller. If the sensor permits power cycling, a switched supply may help, but include its settling time and confirm that cycling does not compromise the measurement. Sample only as fast as the signal and alarm use case require.

Polling frequency matters for pulse-counting loggers: the polling rate must still capture the shortest valid pulse. ADGT’s DTU2xx guide lists 2 Hz, 20 Hz and 100 Hz configurations and warns that higher polling shortens battery life. Its stated life conditions are specific to that model and communication schedule, not transferable to other loggers. The DTU2xx Data Logger Series User Guide provides the model-specific details.
Similarly, ThingsLog’s LPMDL-110x guide states sleep current below 6.5 µA for that logger, while noting that attached sensor draw must be counted separately. It gives 0.33 mAh per 4G transmission at average signal level and says transmission use varies with technology, coverage and signal. These are vendor figures for that product and stated conditions, not general cellular-logger benchmarks. The LPMDL-110x User Guide separates sleep, reading, wake-up and transmission in its power discussion.
Check coverage and network behavior
Compare current traces in the strong and weak coverage expected at deployment sites. Poor coverage can cause additional cell searches or delay registration; a power-saving mode does not eliminate the cost of finding a suitable cell after wake-up. Nordic describes implementation-specific options such as less frequent periodic searches and offline behavior. Consult the modem vendor and carrier before changing search intervals: a longer interval may save energy but delay service recovery.
Compare settings on the dimensions that matter
| Dimension | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reachability and latency | PSM versus eDRX, paging opportunities, and allowed alarm or command delay | Deeper or less frequent listening can reduce energy while delaying downlink access. |
| Energy per measurement and report | Sensor warm-up and acquisition, modem attach or search, transfer, and post-transfer idle time | Sleep current omits the work surrounding each report. |
| Network conditions | LTE-M or NB-IoT availability, carrier and roaming support, signal quality, and registration behavior | Timers and actual radio behavior depend on the network the logger uses. |
| Data schedule | Sampling and polling rate, batch size, protocol overhead, and acceptable delay | Frequency and batching change both communication overhead and data latency. |
| Evidence quality | Integrated current or energy trace on intended hardware and network | It tests the configuration that will actually be deployed. |
Verify savings and estimate battery life cautiously
Change one factor at a time, then repeat the measurement on the intended device, carrier, coverage conditions and reporting schedule. Compare energy over the same representative period, and test both typical and weak-signal scenarios. If a change saves energy but misses a measurement, alarm or command requirement, it is not a valid optimization.

Nordic’s reference profiling scenario uses LTE-M with PSM, 20-byte payloads, ten-minute measurements and a particular 1000 mAh, 3.7 V battery case; that scenario illustrates why a battery-life figure depends on assumptions, not a prediction for other logger deployments.
