Free-to-play usually lowers the cost of getting started; a subscription can make access spending more predictable while you are actively playing. Neither label tells you which MMO will cost less overall. Compare the same games over the same number of months, include the content you actually want, and separate required fees from optional purchases.
What the labels do—and do not—tell you
“Free-to-play” and “subscription” describe broad payment approaches, not complete cost structures. A game can combine a free trial, a limited free account, recurring fees, separately sold expansions, premium services, and microtransactions. Those pieces can also differ by region or platform.

A free account may provide a lasting way to play, but restrict features or content. A subscription may cover access to some content without including the newest expansion. Optional purchases can be cosmetic, convenience-oriented, or tied to progression. The relevant question is what you need to pay for the version of the game you want to play.
Build a like-for-like cost estimate
Choose a time period that reflects your plans—such as six months or a year—and use it for every game you compare. Add only spending you expect to make, while keeping required charges distinct from optional ones.

- Set your play horizon. Estimate how many months you expect to remain active. For games billed in blocks, account for the actual term you would buy rather than assuming every month can be purchased separately.
- List access costs. Include any base-game purchase, recurring subscription or membership, and separately purchased expansion needed for the content you want.
- Check the free tier. Record its content and feature limits, and whether it remains usable indefinitely or is only a trial.
- Account for optional spending you expect. Include planned cosmetics, convenience items, currency, or premium services; do not treat the store’s theoretical maximum as a typical player’s cost.
- Check what happens when you stop paying. Separate access to subscription-gated content from ownership of expansions or items, and find out whether a free account remains available.
- Match region and platform. Use the price and rules for your own storefront, country, and device, and note when you checked them.
A useful comparison is: required purchase and expansion costs + recurring fees during the chosen period + optional spending you expect. Keep the required and optional subtotals visible. That makes it clear whether a low entry price stays low for your play style or whether a recurring fee buys access you value.
How current game examples illustrate the trade-offs
World of Warcraft: trial, subscription, and expansion access
Blizzard’s support guidance says active modes generally require an active subscription, while the Free Trial offers limited modern content. Its page says The War Within became included in the subscription on January 20, 2026, while Midnight requires a separate purchase. This is a dated example of how subscription access and expansion access can differ within one game; check Blizzard’s current terms before budgeting.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: recurring rates vary by term
Square Enix’s Americas product page lists the following U.S. subscription prices and character limits, marked accurate as of April 2026. The amounts are regional, and Square Enix warns that fees can change.

The longer Standard terms lower the per-30-day rate compared with paying for a single 30-day Standard term, but require paying for the longer period up front. Square Enix also says purchasing Dawntrail does not include a 30-day free-play period. These figures are not global prices or a guarantee of terms on every platform.

Guild Wars 2: no required monthly subscription
ArenaNet says players can create a free account and keep playing without a required monthly subscription. Its support page states, “Guild Wars 2 will never require a monthly subscription or any other fees to play!” The same guidance says players may remain on a free account or buy expansions once to unlock additional features. That is Guild Wars 2’s stated policy, not a rule for free-to-play games generally; optional store spending is a separate consideration.
Optional spending can have progression effects
Payment labels alone do not reveal what purchases do. Gravity’s 2025 filing describes Ragnarok Online’s market-specific arrangements, including premium services that can increase experience accumulation or item-drop rates. It reports a subscription-plus-microtransaction model in Japan and says subscription fees in the United States and Canada had ended in April 2011. Those are distinct regional examples, not one worldwide price or policy.

Daybreak’s PlanetSide 2 FAQ lists an optional $14.99-per-month membership in its PS4 section, with benefits including experience, certification, and resource gains, as well as marketplace discounts. The FAQ’s publication date is not shown, so treat that price and offer as an undated, platform-specific listing rather than a confirmed current global rate.

Evaluate fairness separately from price
The cheapest minimum-access option and the best-value experience are not necessarily the same. If optional purchases affect progression, ask how important those advantages are to your intended play. If they are cosmetic, their effect on gameplay differs, even though they still add to your personal budget. Do not infer that every free-to-play game sells progression advantages, or that a subscription game has no additional spending.

Also consider what a fee buys while you are active. A subscription may offer predictable access spending for someone who plays regularly, but becomes less attractive if you pause often or pay for months you barely use. A free account may be economical for occasional play if its limits fit your needs, while expansion purchases can add one-time costs. Your answer depends on the content and features you want, not the model name.
Why prices need a region, platform, and date
There is no meaningful universal MMO price list without specifying where and how you play. Gravity’s filing says pricing reflects operating and publishing costs, user and payment patterns, competition, and purchasing power, and describes different models by market. Storefronts, platforms, and terms can change, so record the source, region, platform, and date beside any figure you use.
The examples here show selected official policies and prices, not typical player spending across the genre. The cited material does not establish that either model is universally cheaper, or that free-to-play monetization is generally pay-to-win.
