There is no single switch that turns off AI features, recommendations, and personalized ads across every device and app. These controls are separate: start with the specific feature or app you want to change, then review your account’s recommendation and advertising settings. Turning off ad personalization does not necessarily turn off AI features or stop recommendations.
Choose the control that matches what you want to change
“AI features” can mean generated replies, summaries, or writing tools. Recommendations are suggestions about apps, content, or search results. Personalized advertising is a separate control again. A setting for one category may leave the others unchanged.

Adjust individual Apple Intelligence features
Apple documents controls for specific features rather than treating every AI-related function as one category. Depending on the device and software available to you, the controls may cover Messages, Mail, and notification summaries; priority notifications; personalized Smart Replies; voicemail suggestions; call context cards; and Journal writing prompts. Review the controls for the feature you actually want to change. Availability varies by device, language, and region.

Use Screen Time restrictions when you need tighter limits
Screen Time can restrict categories such as Writing Tools, image creation, and Intelligence Extensions, including third-party extensions such as ChatGPT. This is a restriction mechanism; it should not be treated as a guarantee that every AI-related function on the iPhone is switched off.
Turn down Siri Suggestions separately
Siri Suggestions are not the same thing as Apple Intelligence features. Apple Support says, “Siri Suggestions are on by default for your apps.” You can adjust suggestions for individual apps and control where suggestions appear, including in apps, on the Home Screen, as app suggestions, or in notifications. Apple also documents an iCloud control for people who do not want Siri personalization to update across devices.

On Windows: review Copilot, recommendations, and ads as distinct settings
Check Copilot personalization and memory
Microsoft’s Copilot privacy settings cover personalization and memory. Review those settings for the Copilot experience you use; changing Windows advertising preferences is a separate action and does not serve as a Copilot off switch.

Review Windows 11 recommendations and offers
Windows 11 has a Recommendations & offers privacy settings page with options that include the advertising ID and Start/search personalization. These controls address recommendations or ad personalization in Windows, not every recommendation across your apps.

Know what turning off the advertising ID changes
Microsoft says disabling the Windows advertising ID does not reduce the number of ads shown. It may make those ads less relevant instead. So if your goal is fewer ads, changing this preference does not promise that outcome; it also does not turn off Copilot or all recommendations.
In Google: manage Search personalization and ads without assuming AI Search is disabled
Review Search personalization
Google says Search personalization can affect which results appear and the order of content blocks. Turning off personalized recommendations does not stop Google from using all information to improve results. Google also provides data and privacy controls for pausing or deleting stored activity; those are separate choices from turning off a particular AI feature.

Keep ad preferences separate from AI Search features
Google’s My Ad Center is an advertising control, not a general switch for Search AI features. The official guidance covered here does not establish a universal, current setting that hides AI Overviews or turns off AI Mode for every account and region. Do not assume that changing ad personalization or Search personalization will remove those features.

Meta has said that interactions with its generative AI features would inform content and ad recommendations across its platforms. Its announcement points users toward Ads Preferences and other feed controls to adjust what they see, but it does not establish current, step-by-step menu paths for each app. Open the current feed and ad preferences in the app you use, and treat them as recommendation or advertising controls—not as a documented universal switch for all AI features.

Use a practical, app-by-app check
- Name the unwanted behavior. Decide whether you are trying to reduce summaries or generated content, app suggestions, feed or search recommendations, personalized ads, or the use of stored activity. They may have different controls.
- Start where you see it. Check the feature’s settings in that device or app before changing account-wide preferences. On Apple devices, look at the individual AI feature and Siri Suggestions separately.
- Review account-level controls. Check personalization, memory, advertising, or activity settings for the account you use in that app. If a preference offers cross-device syncing, check whether you want the change to apply across your signed-in devices.
- Check the result in the same place. Return to the app, feed, or feature you were adjusting. A change to ad personalization, for example, is not evidence that AI features or non-ad recommendations have changed.
- Recheck after updates or when switching accounts. Labels and available settings can vary by software version, region, device, and account, so a control may not appear in every setup.
Changing a recommendation or advertising preference does not, by itself, establish that earlier activity has been deleted, that all data use has stopped, or that recommendations have been eliminated everywhere. For data history, review the service’s separate activity and privacy controls.
