A black rectangle or highlight alone does not establish that the underlying content was removed. Adobe says an applied and saved redaction in Acrobat Pro is permanent; that claim describes Adobe’s documented workflow, not every PDF editor or every possible file structure.
Redaction and sanitization do different jobs
A PDF can contain information that is not apparent from its pages. A true redaction removes selected visible text or graphics. Sanitization addresses hidden information, such as metadata, attachments, scripts, and other non-visible content. Doing one does not automatically answer whether the other has been handled.

Adobe Acrobat’s product documentation describes redaction as permanently hiding sensitive information. In its documented Acrobat Pro workflow, the redaction takes effect when you apply it and save the sanitized document. For a file you plan to share, treat both the visible redactions and the hidden-content choices as separate items to review.
Before you redact
- Work on a copy, not the only copy of the original. The original may be needed for your own records, while the sanitized copy is the one to review for sharing.
- Identify every sensitive item and where it may appear: on the page, in repeated text, in form data, or in document features such as comments and attachments.
- Use a PDF editor with a redaction feature that applies the removal. Drawing a shape over content or using a highlight is not a substitute for applying a redaction.
- Plan to inspect the result after saving. Applying redactions does not remove the need to check that the intended areas were selected and hidden information was addressed.
Apply redactions to individual text and images in Acrobat Pro
Adobe’s guide, “Redact sensitive content in PDFs in Acrobat Pro,” last updated August 31, 2026, documents these menu labels. They can change as Acrobat is updated.
#1 Best Overall
- Work securely offline — without connecting to the cloud — with desktop-only PDF tools.
- Edit text and images and reorder and delete pages in a PDF.
- Convert PDFs to Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files while preserving fonts, formatting, and layouts.
- Easily create, fill, and sign forms.
- Password-protect documents or redact sections of a PDF to keep sensitive information secure.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat Pro.
- Choose All tools > Redact a PDF.
- Select Redact text and images.
- Mark each sensitive text or image region you want removed. Work through the document page by page so you do not overlook repeated appearances or nearby content.
- Choose Apply. Review the apply dialog and choose whether to sanitize and remove hidden information.
- Continue to Save Sanitized Document, choose a filename and location for the output, and save it.
Marking an area and applying the redaction are distinct actions. Do not stop after placing marks: complete the apply and save steps. Save to a new file so the original remains separate from the version intended for distribution.
Redact repeated words or patterns with search
Search-based redaction is useful when a name, account number, or other term appears in several places. Acrobat lets you inspect matches before marking them, which matters because a search can return occurrences that should not all be removed.

- Edit text and images without jumping to another app.
- E-sign documents or request e-signatures on any device. Recipients don’t need to log in to e-sign.
- Convert PDFs to editable Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents.
- Share PDFs for collaboration. Commenting features make it easy for reviewers to comment, mark up, and annotate.
- Choose All tools > Redact a PDF > Find text and redact.
- Search for a single word or phrase, multiple words or phrases, or a pattern.
- Review the results and check the occurrences that should be redacted. Do not assume every match is sensitive or that every relevant occurrence has been found.
- Mark the selected results, then apply the redactions.
- Choose the hidden-information option in the apply dialog, continue, and save the sanitized document to a chosen filename and location.
Search helps with repeated text; it does not replace review of the document’s pages or hidden content. Use manual marking for sensitive regions that search cannot identify, such as an image or a visual detail.
Remove hidden information
If you need to address hidden content separately, Adobe’s “Sanitize PDFs and remove hidden content in Acrobat Pro,” last updated September 23, 2025, documents a standalone route:
Rank #3
- Create and edit PDFs. Collaborate with ease. E-sign documents and collect signatures. Get everything done in one app, wherever you go.
- Open All tools > Redact a PDF.
- Select Sanitize document.
- Choose Remove all to remove all detected hidden information, or choose Selectively remove and check the items you want to remove in the Hidden Information panel.
- Save the resulting file. Adobe says saving is necessary to permanently remove the selected content.
Remove all is the broader option; selective removal gives you more control over what remains. The documentation does not quantify the trade-off. Review the detected categories before choosing, especially if the PDF relies on document features you want to preserve.
Use this checklist to review what may be in a PDF
Adobe’s “Types of redactable data in PDFs,” last updated November 5, 2025, lists the following categories. This is a review checklist, not a claim that every PDF contains every type.
Rank #4
- EXCLUSIVE AMAZON BUNDLE - Securely create, edit, and share PDFs with Adobe Acrobat Pro. Secure your pc and personal information against advanced threats, frauds, and scams with McAfee Total Protection. Introductory offer for new users
- ULTIMATE TOOL FOR CREATIVING – Create and edit PDFs. Collaborate with ease. E-sign documents and collect signatures. Get everything done in one app, wherever you go
- REVISIONS - Edit text and images without jumping to another app.
- ELECTRONIC SIGNATURES - E-sign documents or request e-signatures on any device. Recipients don’t need to log in to esign.
- CONVERT PDFs - Convert your pdf files to editable Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents.
- Visible page content: text and images, including the specific information you marked for redaction.
- Forms: form fields and associated data.
- Document details: metadata such as the author name and keywords.
- Attached or navigational content: attachments and bookmarks.
- Review content: comments and markups.
- Content not normally visible on the page: hidden text, hidden layers, and an embedded search index.
- Content obscured by editing or layout: deleted or cropped content and overlapping objects.
- Interactive or active content: links, actions, and JavaScript.
Use the categories to decide what to inspect and what to remove; do not assume that blacking out a page region also handles comments, metadata, attachments, or other hidden elements. The Acrobat sanitization controls are the documented way to address hidden information in this workflow.

| Task | Useful approach | What to review |
|---|---|---|
| Remove a specific visible region | Manually mark the text or image with Redact text and images. | Check that each intended region is marked, then apply and save. |
| Remove repeated words, phrases, or patterns | Use Find text and redact. | Inspect search results and select the occurrences that should be removed. |
| Address hidden information | Use the hidden-information option while applying redactions, or select Sanitize document. | Choose between removing all detected items and selecting categories, then save. |
These methods are complementary: a repeated-text search is not a hidden-data scan, and sanitizing hidden information is not a substitute for marking visible content.

Check the saved file before sharing
- Open the saved sanitized copy, rather than relying only on the unsaved editing view.
- Review the pages where you placed redactions and confirm that the intended visible regions are covered.
- For repeated terms, check the relevant occurrences in the document, not only the search-result list.
- Confirm that you completed the hidden-information choice you intended and saved the sanitized output.
- Share the sanitized copy, not the unredacted original.
This review helps catch missed selections and incomplete workflow steps. Adobe’s documentation supports the permanence of applied and saved redactions in Acrobat Pro; it does not establish a universal guarantee for every PDF editor, version, platform, file structure, or other method of handling PDFs. Menu labels and feature availability may vary by product version, platform, or plan.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Covering instead of redacting: a visual rectangle or highlight alone does not establish that the underlying information was removed. Use the editor’s redaction function and apply it.
- Marking without applying: complete the apply step; marks awaiting application are not the finished redaction.
- Applying but not saving: save the sanitized document to make the documented removal permanent.
- Redacting visible content but overlooking hidden data: review the sanitization choice and relevant hidden-information categories.
- Trusting every search match—or assuming search found everything: inspect the results and manually review the document for other sensitive content.
- Sending the wrong file: keep the original distinct from the sanitized copy and share only the reviewed output.
