The exact retry window and recovery controls depend on the webhook provider.
Why restoring the backend is only the first step
A provider may retry failed deliveries, stop retrying after a set period, or remove a subscription after repeated failures. Some providers do not automatically retry at all. A backend outage can therefore leave events undelivered even after your endpoint is healthy again.

Recovery has two distinct tasks: replay the deliveries the provider still knows about, and find any missing records that can no longer be replayed. A successful HTTP response should mean the event has been durably accepted for processing—not merely that the request reached the server.
Recover in a controlled sequence
- Restore the endpoint and dependencies. Fix the cause of the outage, including availability, timeout, response handling, or subscription configuration. Confirm the endpoint can return the provider’s required success status within its deadline.
- Inspect delivery attempts for the outage period. In the provider’s logs or dashboard, identify failed deliveries and record their event or delivery IDs, timestamps, response codes, attempt counts, and failure reasons. These details help distinguish an endpoint failure from an application-level error.
- Accept requests quickly and queue the work. Persist the incoming event to a durable queue, acknowledge it promptly, and process queued work independently. Avoid overwhelming a newly restored backend with a large replay backlog.
- Fix the underlying failure before replay. Replaying against a still-broken endpoint can create more failed attempts and make diagnosis harder.
- Replay through the provider’s supported dashboard or API. Use the delivery history to select failed events and retry them. The available controls and any replay window vary by provider.
- Prevent duplicate side effects. Persist delivery IDs and processing outcomes, and make handlers idempotent so a retry cannot repeat an action such as creating an order or issuing a refund.
- Reconcile what replay cannot recover. Compare provider-side records with application state. Restore subscriptions if needed, fetch missing records through the provider’s API or other source of truth, and send them through the same validated processing path.
- Monitor the recovery. Track delivery success rate, response latency, retry counts, queue depth, and unresolved or dead-lettered events until the backlog is cleared.
Meet the provider’s response deadline
Webhook requests are not a good place for slow business logic. GitHub recommends returning a 2XX response within 10 seconds and processing work asynchronously; it considers a delivery failed if the server is unavailable or takes longer than 10 seconds. See GitHub’s webhook best practices.

Shopify’s verification guidance specifies a one-second connection timeout and a five-second total request timeout. A response outside the 200 range is an error. Its guidance also recommends queuing work to handle traffic bursts. See Shopify’s delivery verification guidance.
For either provider, acknowledge only after the event has been durably recorded. If your handler returns success before storing the event and then crashes, the provider may consider delivery complete while your application has lost the work.

Retries and manual replay can deliver the same event more than once. Store a provider’s stable delivery identifier in persistent storage and record whether processing completed. On a duplicate, avoid repeating the side effect and return a success response so the provider does not keep retrying.

For GitHub, the X-GitHub-Delivery header identifies a delivery, and GitHub uses the same value when that delivery is redelivered. Shopify recommends persistent deduplication using X-Shopify-Webhook-Id. Its guidance explains how to verify deliveries and deduplicate webhook IDs.
Keep delivery deduplication distinct from business-level event correlation. A provider may expose separate event and delivery identifiers; deduplicating a transport attempt does not necessarily establish whether two different deliveries represent the same business change. Use the identifiers the provider documents, and make the underlying operation safe to repeat.

Recover gaps after retries end
When provider retries have ended, or an outage outlasts the provider’s delivery history, compare the provider’s records with your application’s state. Query the provider API or source of truth for the affected period, identify missing records, and pass them through the same validation, deduplication, and processing logic used for normal webhook traffic.
Shopify explicitly notes that an extended outage may require importing missing data from the outage period and recreating applicable subscriptions. Check subscription state before creating shop-specific subscriptions to avoid duplicates. Recovery from another provider may require a different reconciliation route.

Make the next outage easier to recover from
- Persist each accepted event before acknowledging it.
- Use a durable queue with bounded concurrency so replay does not overload recovered services.
- Keep delivery IDs, processing status, timestamps, and failure details long enough to investigate and reconcile incidents.
- Alert on endpoint errors and latency, rising retry counts, queue growth, and dead-lettered events.
- Document the provider-specific replay path, credentials, retry behavior, and subscription recovery steps for operators.
