How Old Is My Dell Computer? Find Its Build or Ship Date

Use your Dell Service Tag to look up the device’s support details. A build or shipped date, when available, is better evidence of age than the model name or warranty expiration.

To find out how old your Dell computer is, locate its Service Tag and enter it on Dell Support. If the device-specific support details show a build date or shipped date, use that date to estimate the computer’s age. Those dates are not shown for every product, so use an order record or receipt if they are missing—and describe that as purchase age, not manufacture age.

Check your Dell computer’s Service Tag

The Service Tag is the key to Dell’s device-specific support lookup. Dell describes it as a seven-character alphanumeric code; the Express Service Code is its numeric conversion. On a laptop, check the bottom cover first. If the label is missing or hard to read, retrieve the tag digitally instead.

On a Dell laptop

  • BIOS or UEFI: Restart the laptop and open BIOS/UEFI setup; the Service Tag is typically listed in the system information.
  • SupportAssist: Open Dell SupportAssist and look for the device details.
  • Windows Command Prompt: Run wmic bios get serialnumber. Dell notes that WMIC is disabled by default in Windows 11 version 24H2 and newer, so this command may not work there.
  • Windows PowerShell: Use Dell’s documented PowerShell method if WMIC is unavailable.
  • Ubuntu or another Linux terminal: Dell also documents a terminal method for retrieving the tag.

Dell’s instructions for laptop methods are in Locate Your Laptop’s Service Tag.

On a Dell desktop

Check the rear panel or BIOS/UEFI, or use Command Prompt, PowerShell, or SupportAssist. Dell lists these options in its Service Tag locator. These methods identify the computer; they do not reveal its age by themselves.

Look for a build date or shipped date

  1. Open Dell Support and enter the Service Tag, or let the site detect it if that option is available.
  2. Open the device’s support details and look for a build date or shipped date. Dell’s warranty lookup confirms that entering a Service Tag can show warranty status and expiration, while a Dell Community age-check post says the support details may also show build or shipping dates. The date fields are not guaranteed to appear for every product or page.
  3. Calculate elapsed time from the displayed date to today. Keep the label accurate: a build date marks manufacture, while a shipped date marks dispatch from Dell.

The age-check instructions were posted by a Dell-FAQ moderator in Dell Community and updated May 2, 2025: How to Check the Age of Your Dell Laptop or Desktop. Dell’s official warranty status and information guide explains the Service Tag lookup for warranty status and expiration, but does not promise build or ship dates for every device.

If Dell Support does not show a date

Check the original order confirmation, receipt, or seller records for when the computer was purchased. That establishes purchase timing, not when the unit was manufactured or first used. A shipping-box label can help identify the model and Service Tag, but is not necessarily a manufacturing-date record.

Keep the kinds of evidence distinct:

  • Build date: when the computer was manufactured, if Dell displays it.
  • Shipped date: when Dell dispatched the computer, if displayed.
  • Purchase date: when the buyer acquired it, established by an order or receipt.
  • Warranty expiration: the end date of warranty coverage, not the computer’s manufacture date. Warranty terms and registration or ownership history can affect how that date relates to the device’s age.

Why the model name is not enough

A model name identifies a product model or family, not the production date of your particular computer. Dell’s model-identification guide explains how to find the model for support, drivers, manuals, specifications, and capabilities. Use the Service Tag to look up your individual unit; use a dated record to estimate its age.

Windows 11 Settings can show a Dell computer’s model. Dell says the model listing is not available in Settings on Windows 10 and earlier. A model lookup can help identify the machine, but it does not independently establish its age.
