How to Recover Text You Lost in a Web Form—and Prevent It Next Time

A closed tab, refresh, or timeout can wipe a web form. Here are the recovery options worth trying—and a reliable way to protect long drafts.

First, try to restore the closed tab if that is how the text disappeared. In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac. A restored page may still have an empty form, but check it before refreshing or navigating away. If the browser and website did not retain your draft, there may be no way to recover it.

Try these recovery steps in order

  1. Reopen a recently closed tab or window

In Chrome, use Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac. Google documents this shortcut for reopening closed tabs and windows in its Chrome tab-management help. If the page returns, inspect the form before refreshing or leaving it. Restoring the tab does not guarantee that text typed into the form will return.

  2. Check Firefox form suggestions

In Firefox, focus the field where you entered the text. Start typing the first letters of the old entry, or press the down-arrow in an empty field to see whether Firefox offers a saved value. This can help with entries Firefox retained, but it is not a backup of every field or a dependable way to restore a long response. Mozilla explains the feature and its limits in its form-autofill help.

  3. Look for a site draft or recovery prompt

If the website timed out or reset, check whether it offers a draft, autosave, recovery prompt, or a way to return to the previous page state. What is available depends on the site; there is no universal browser command that restores unsaved website text.

  4. Do not clear browser data while troubleshooting

Clearing browsing data may remove saved form entries. Chrome lists saved form entries among data types a user can delete in its browsing-data help. Avoid clearing data until you have tried the relevant recovery options.

What browser history can—and cannot—do

Browser history can help you find and reopen the page, but that is different from recovering the text you typed into it. The documented Chrome shortcut restores a closed tab or window; it does not promise to restore unsent form content. Firefox form suggestions are a separate, limited possibility when an entry was retained.

Why Firefox may not offer the old entry

Firefox form history needs to be enabled and its saved entries must still exist. A website can ask Firefox not to save form history, and extensions or security and privacy software may interfere. Even when enabled, form history is not a guaranteed record of every field or long answer. Mozilla describes these conditions in its form-autofill documentation.

How to avoid losing a long response again

Keep a separate draft

For an important or lengthy answer, write it in a notes app or text editor first. Keep that draft until the website confirms submission, then paste the text into the form. This simple habit gives you a copy independent of the page and browser.

Consider an extension only after checking its privacy details

Some browser extensions advertise saving and restoring form data. For example, the Chrome Web Store listing for Form Recover describes local saving and restoration after a refresh, crash, or unexpected closure. Those are the publisher’s claims; they do not establish that the extension works on every site or field.

Before using any form-recovery extension, check:

  • Which browsers and sites it supports, and which fields it saves or excludes.
  • Whether data stays on your device or is sent to a remote service, and how long it is retained.
  • How to delete saved data and what permissions the extension requests.
  • Its privacy policy and whether its claims have independent support.

Avoid entering passwords, payment details, or other sensitive information into a recovery tool unless you understand how it handles that data.
