Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallA Windows 11 blue screen does not, by itself, mean your personal files are gone. First protect any copies you can still access; then choose a repair option based on whether Windows starts, whether you have a backup, and whether the drive is encrypted or failing. Avoid resetting, reinstalling, formatting, or making partitions until you understand what that action will remove.
First, check whether your files are already backed up
If Windows still starts, copy your most important files to a separate external drive before trying more repairs. If it will not start, use another device to check OneDrive or any other cloud account where you may have saved copies. A blue screen alone cannot establish whether files were deleted or whether the storage drive is healthy.

Check whether File History or another backup was configured before the crash. File History can restore earlier versions only if it had been set up to save copies to an external drive or network location. Windows Backup can restore apps and settings through its account-based flow; personal data backups are handled separately. See Microsoft’s guidance on backup and restore in Windows and File History.
If you hear repeated clicking, the drive is unreadable, or you have other signs of physical drive failure, stop trying software recovery. The built-in Windows tools described below do not establish a diagnosis or guarantee recovery from a physically damaged drive. If the files are important, consider qualified data recovery assistance before further attempts.

Which recovery option should you choose?
Windows recovery tools do different jobs. Use a backup to restore a saved copy; use repair tools to address startup or system problems; use Windows File Recovery only when trying to recover deleted files from local storage. Read the choices on screen before confirming an operation.
| Option | When it may help | Effect on personal files | What to know |

| Startup Repair | Windows will not start normally. | It is a startup repair tool, not a file backup. Microsoft’s overview does not state that it preserves or removes personal files. | It attempts to fix problems that prevent Windows from starting. Microsoft’s recovery options. |
| System Restore | A suitable restore point exists and a recent system change may be involved. | Personal files are not affected. | It can roll back system files and settings, and may undo recent apps, drivers, updates, or settings. System Restore details. |

How to open Windows Recovery Environment when Windows will not start
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) includes tools such as Startup Repair, System Restore, Command Prompt, update removal, and image recovery. Depending on your Windows version, device configuration, or organization policy, the available menus may differ. Microsoft’s guidance is on Windows Recovery Environment.
Use Automatic Repair if it appears
Windows may enter WinRE automatically after failed starts. If Automatic Repair appears, follow its prompts to reach the recovery tools. Microsoft’s support procedure also describes interrupting startup twice so Automatic Repair appears on the third start. Because forced power-offs disrupt startup, use that procedure only when you cannot sign in or reach recovery through a supported restart route.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Boot from recovery or installation media
- On another working PC, create a Windows recovery drive or Windows installation USB. Creating a recovery drive erases the USB drive, and that media is not a personal-file backup.
- Connect the USB to the affected PC and start it from that device. The key or menu used to choose a boot device varies by manufacturer; consult the PC maker’s instructions if needed.
- With Windows installation media, choose Repair my PC to open recovery tools. Do not proceed with an installation if your priority is protecting files.
If WinRE asks for a BitLocker recovery key, resolve that prompt before expecting recovery tools to access the encrypted volume.
What to try in WinRE before resetting or reinstalling
Startup Repair for a boot failure
Use Startup Repair when Windows cannot start. It attempts to fix startup problems; it is not a substitute for copying or backing up personal files. If it does not resolve the startup issue, do not assume that repeating it will recover deleted files.
System Restore after a recent change
If a suitable restore point is available and the blue screen followed a recent system change, System Restore can roll back system files and settings without affecting personal files. It may undo recent applications, drivers, updates, or settings, so review the changes shown before confirming.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Remove a recent update when the timing fits
If the blue screen began after a Windows update, WinRE may offer an option to uninstall a recent update. This addresses a possible system change; it does not restore a backup or retrieve files that were deleted.
Will Reset this PC or reinstalling Windows delete files?
It depends on the specific option. Reset this PC offers a choice to keep personal files, but that choice removes apps and settings; choosing to remove everything can delete personal files too. A recovery-drive reinstall removes personal files, apps, and settings. Other installation paths can have different effects, so do not assume every “repair” or “reinstall” has the same outcome.
Before selecting Reset this PC, recovery-drive restore, or an installation option, read the keep/remove details on screen. If your files are not backed up and you cannot afford to lose them, stop before an option that may erase data and pursue a safe copy or suitable recovery path first.

Can Windows File Recovery get deleted files back?
Windows File Recovery is a Microsoft Store command-line app for attempting to recover deleted files from local storage. It is not a general fix for every blue screen, an inaccessible drive, cloud storage, or a network share. Microsoft advises: “If you want to increase your chances of recovering a file, minimize or avoid using your computer.” New writes can overwrite data that might otherwise still be recoverable.
What you need before running it
- A source drive containing the deleted files and a different destination drive for recovered files. Microsoft’s instruction is: “The source and destination drives must be different.” If the PC has only one drive, use a USB or external hard drive as the destination.
- The Windows File Recovery app installed from Microsoft Store. If Windows will not boot, you may need to get Windows running or connect the affected drive to a working PC in a way that allows it to be accessed; the cited guidance does not provide a universal procedure for unreadable or physically damaged drives.
- For files on the operating-system drive, filters that specify the user files or folders you want to find.
Choose a mode based on the file system and deletion
- Regular mode: Microsoft’s recommended starting mode for recently deleted files on NTFS.
- Extensive mode: Microsoft’s recommendation for older deletions, formatted or corrupted NTFS drives, and FAT or exFAT.
Recovery is not guaranteed. If deleted data has been overwritten, including on an SSD, it may no longer be recoverable. Follow Microsoft’s current Windows File Recovery instructions for the commands and filters that fit your drive and files.

Where to find a BitLocker recovery key
BitLocker encrypts the drive, so WinRE may need its recovery key to unlock the volume. The key is not something to bypass; without access to it, recovery tools may not be able to read the encrypted data.

- For a work- or school-managed device, an organization may hold the key in Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory. Contact the IT administrator if you cannot find it yourself.
Key storage depends on how the device was configured and enrolled. Microsoft’s instructions explain how to find your BitLocker recovery key.
When to stop troubleshooting and protect the drive
If the drive is unreadable, appears physically damaged, or contains files that are more valuable than the PC itself, avoid repeated repair, reset, or recovery attempts that could write to the drive. Windows’ built-in recovery documentation does not establish a universal recovery method or guarantee for physically damaged or inaccessible storage. Consider a qualified data recovery professional before continuing. An external drive can serve as a separate destination for copied or recovered files, but it cannot guarantee recovery and is not a backup unless you actually have a separate copy of the files.
