Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst, stop saving or downloading anything to the drive where the files were deleted. Then check both Recycle Bins that may apply: Windows Recycle Bin for local files and the OneDrive web Recycle Bin for cloud-synced files. If neither has the files, check backups before trying Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery tool for local storage. The right route depends on whether the files were local, synced with OneDrive, or stored online-only.
Before trying recovery, identify where the files were stored
A Windows cleanup can remove files from different places, and the recovery route depends on the original location:

- Local files: Start with the Windows Recycle Bin and any backup. Windows File Recovery may attempt recovery from local drives if those options fail.
- Files in a synced OneDrive folder: Check both the Windows Recycle Bin and the OneDrive website’s Recycle Bin. The local bin can contain deleted synced files, but cloud-deleted online-only files may not appear there.
- Online-only OneDrive files: Search OneDrive on the web and check its Recycle Bin. Windows File Recovery does not recover cloud storage.
- Network shares: Windows File Recovery does not support network file shares. Check the storage provider’s own recovery options or backups instead.
If local files are missing and you cannot restore them immediately, minimize use of the affected drive. Microsoft explains that deleted-file space is marked as free and new data may overwrite it. Avoid installing recovery software, downloading files, or saving new work to that drive. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance recommends minimizing or avoiding computer use to improve the chance of recovery.

- Open Recycle Bin on the desktop.
- Find the deleted file or folder. You can sort the list or search by name if needed.
- Right-click the item and select Restore. Windows returns it to its original location.
If the file is not there, it may have been permanently deleted, removed from a location that bypasses the local bin, or stored in OneDrive in a way that makes the web bin the relevant place to check.

- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Search OneDrive and check its web Recycle Bin
- Sign in to the OneDrive website with the Microsoft account that held the file. If you use both personal and work or school accounts, check the right one.
- Search OneDrive by file name or a descriptive term. Check likely folders and Personal Vault if you use it.
- Open the OneDrive web Recycle Bin. Select the file or folder and choose Restore if it is listed.
Microsoft’s current support guidance states that deleted items may remain in OneDrive’s Recycle Bin for 30 days for personal accounts and 93 days for work or school accounts, unless an administrator has changed the organization’s retention setting. Items permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin cannot be restored through this documented method. See Microsoft’s OneDrive file-restore instructions for current details.
If a file is missing from the expected folder, check whether it is in another folder or account before concluding that it is gone. Microsoft’s OneDrive missing-file guidance also recommends checking Personal Vault and verifying which account is signed in.

Check backups before attempting file recovery
Look for a backup that was configured before the deletion, such as a backup on another drive or a backup service you already use. Restore the file from that backup if a usable copy exists. Microsoft recommends checking backups before using Windows File Recovery.
Do not assume that File History or Previous Versions contains a copy: those options help only if a suitable backup or snapshot was already available. The specific steps and availability depend on how the PC was configured.

Use Windows File Recovery for deleted local files
If the file was on a local drive and is missing from the Recycle Bin and backups, Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery app can attempt to recover it. The command-line app is available from the Microsoft Store. It supports local internal drives, external drives, and USB devices, but not cloud storage or network shares. Recovery is not guaranteed.
Prepare a separate destination drive
Do not save recovered files to the same drive you are scanning. Microsoft requires different source and destination drives. If you do not already have another suitable drive, an external hard drive for recovered files may provide a separate destination; existing storage on another drive can also work.

Run a recovery command
Microsoft documents this command format:
winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/mode] [/switches]
For example, to try to recover a Documents folder from C: to E:, Microsoft gives:

winfr C: E: /regular /n Users<username>Documents
To search for PDF and DOCX files instead, its example is:
winfr C: E: /regular /n *.pdf /n *.docx
When recovering from the Windows operating-system drive, often C:, use the /n filter to specify a file or folder. Replace <username> with the Windows account folder name on your PC. Check Microsoft’s current Windows File Recovery instructions for exact syntax and mode guidance before running a command.
Choose a recovery mode
Microsoft documents Regular and Extensive modes and recommends starting with Regular if you are unsure. Non-NTFS file systems are supported only in Extensive mode. FAT and exFAT are common on SD cards and smaller flash or USB drives; NTFS is common on computers and larger drives. To check a drive’s file system, open it in File Explorer, right-click the drive, and select Properties.
When several OneDrive files changed or disappeared
If the problem affected many files or folders in OneDrive, Microsoft 365 subscribers can use OneDrive restore to return activity to a point within the last 30 days. Review the activity list and chosen restore point before proceeding: files and folders created after that point are sent to the OneDrive Recycle Bin. For one missing file, check its OneDrive Recycle Bin or available file-version options first. See Microsoft’s OneDrive restore instructions for the current process.
Know when to stop
- The file was permanently deleted from OneDrive’s Recycle Bin: Microsoft says it cannot be restored through the documented OneDrive recovery path.
- The file was cloud-only or on a network share: Windows File Recovery is not the appropriate tool; use the cloud provider’s recovery options or check with the administrator responsible for the share.
- The file is especially valuable: Stop using the affected device and consider consulting a qualified data-recovery professional. No recovery outcome is guaranteed.
Microsoft’s guidance does not establish device-specific recovery odds or whether a particular SSD can recover a deleted file. Avoid relying on a blanket promise that recovery will—or will not—work on a specific drive.
