To recover a failed subscription payment, first inspect the invoice and the payment provider’s failure details. Then decide whether the payment can be retried or the customer must update a payment method or authenticate the charge. Send any customer action through a secure provider-hosted or account-based flow, and verify both the invoice outcome and the subscription’s status afterward. A failed charge alone does not tell you which remedy is needed.
How do I recover a failed subscription payment?
- Find the failed invoice and payment attempt. Check the provider’s billing dashboard or API for the invoice, payment result, failure reason, and any required customer action. Do not assume every decline is retryable.
- Choose the next step from the failure details. If the provider identifies the failure as eligible for another attempt, use its retry controls. If the saved payment details are stale or declined, ask the customer to update them. If authentication is required, prompt the customer to complete it rather than waiting for a retry.
- Send a secure customer route when needed. Direct the customer to the provider’s hosted payment update or authentication flow, or to an authenticated account area that launches it. Never ask them to email card numbers or security codes.
- Monitor the payment and subscription. Confirm whether the invoice was paid and check the subscription state and your service’s access decision. A successful invoice payment does not automatically prove that your application’s entitlement handling has updated correctly.
- Handle exhausted retries deliberately. When the retry window ends, inspect the invoice and subscription states, then apply your documented policy for unpaid or canceled subscriptions.
Failure labels and available remedies vary by processor, payment method, issuer, geography, and account configuration. Use the provider’s specific failure details rather than applying a universal decline-code rule.

When should you retry, and when should the customer act?
Retryable payment failures
For failures the provider considers retryable, configure its retry schedule or use its provider-managed timing if available. In Stripe, recovery options include Smart Retries, failed-payment emails, and automatic card updates; network card updates depend on issuer participation, and support varies by geography. Stripe describes Smart Retries as using machine learning to choose timing based on customer, card, and charge properties. These mechanisms can help with recovery, but they do not guarantee that a payment will succeed. See Stripe’s explanation of recovered payments and its engineering account of Smart Retries.
Outdated or declined payment details
If the provider indicates that the stored method needs updating, ask the customer to replace or refresh it through a secure provider flow. The exact link and user experience depend on your processor and configuration. In Stripe’s subscription-update API context, a subscription’s default payment method takes precedence over the customer’s default method; check which method is attached to the subscription you are trying to recover. See the Stripe subscription update reference.

Authentication-required payments
A payment requiring 3D Secure authentication needs the customer to complete that step. Do not rely on an automatic retry to request authentication: Stripe says subscription payments that fail because 3D Secure authentication was required are not automatically retried under its retry settings. Prompt the customer through the provider’s authentication flow. See Stripe’s guidance on retries for failed 3D Secure authorizations.
How should you set up retries and customer notifications?
Choose a retry approach that matches your processor’s controls and your customer experience. Provider-managed timing may reduce the need to choose each attempt manually; a custom schedule gives you more direct control. In either case, make sure notifications explain the next action clearly and lead to the correct secure update or authentication path when the customer needs to act.

Stripe describes Smart Retries, failed-payment emails, automatic card updates, and configurable retry and subscription settings as parts of its recovery options. Those are Stripe features, not universal billing behavior. Confirm which options apply to your processor, account, payment method, and region before relying on them.

Payment and subscription states are related, but a failed invoice does not by itself establish what happens to access in your product. In Stripe, an automatic-charge failure or a payment awaiting customer action can put a subscription into past_due. After retries, settings determine whether it becomes canceled or unpaid; Stripe states that an unpaid subscription does not automatically attempt subsequent invoices. See the Stripe subscriptions API reference.

Set an access policy that fits your service and customer commitments, then implement it separately from the processor’s billing state. There is no single grace-period length that applies to every business. Consider what customers can still do while a payment is being resolved, what happens when retries end, and how support can restore access after payment.
How do you verify recovery?
Track billing outcomes and product access together. Stripe distinguishes events including invoice.payment_failed, invoice.payment_action_required, and invoice.paid. Use the relevant provider events or reporting as inputs to your own billing and entitlement logic, and confirm that your system has processed them as intended. See the Stripe event reference.

- Check whether a customer action remains outstanding.
- Check the subscription’s current status after the payment attempt or retry window.
- Check that the application’s access matches the policy for that billing state.
What should you compare when choosing a recovery setup?
When evaluating built-in billing features or a separate recovery tool, compare the operational capabilities rather than assuming one vendor will recover more payments. The Stripe sources describe Stripe’s own features; they do not establish a neutral vendor ranking or a generally applicable recovery rate.
