If a Matter accessory stops responding after an update, start by checking whether it still works in the manufacturer’s app, then restart the accessory and any relevant hub or bridge. Check for maker-specific firmware guidance before removing the device from your home. Resetting and pairing again should come later: the exact reset procedure depends on the model, and an app’s “not responding” message alone does not prove the accessory is broken.
First, find out what is affected
Check the accessory in both its home app and the manufacturer’s app, if it has one. Apple recommends checking the maker’s app and whether the accessory needs a firmware update as part of troubleshooting. If it responds in the manufacturer’s app but not the home app, that is a clue to investigate the home-app, controller, or hub path; it does not prove which part is at fault.

Also check whether the problem affects just one accessory, several accessories from one manufacturer, or devices from several manufacturers. Apple’s troubleshooting distinguishes between a single manufacturer’s devices and failures across multiple manufacturers. A wider failure makes shared components—such as the phone, home app, controller, hub, bridge, or network—more relevant to check before resetting individual accessories.

- Check the phone and app. For Apple Home troubleshooting, make sure Bluetooth is on for the iPhone or iPad you are using. Restart the home app and check whether the accessory appears in the manufacturer’s app.
- Restart the accessory. Use its normal power control if available. For a battery-powered accessory, Apple advises removing and reinserting the batteries.
- Check the manufacturer’s guidance. Open the maker’s app or support instructions and look for firmware status or advice for the specific model. Do not assume that an update caused the problem merely because the symptom appeared afterward.
- Restart relevant hubs and bridges. Restart the home hub or third-party bridge used by the accessory before removing its pairing.
If it uses Thread
In its Apple Home troubleshooting guidance, Apple advises disconnecting a Thread accessory from power for five minutes, reconnecting it, and then allowing ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize. Treat this as Apple’s guidance for that troubleshooting context, not as a universal Matter recovery rule. Matter accessories do not all use the same network transport.

If several manufacturers’ accessories are affected
Investigate shared connectivity before resetting each device. In Apple Home, check that the phone or tablet is on the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories, restart the Home app and controller devices, and consider whether the router, bridge, hub, VPN, or third-party security software is interfering. The relevant network checks depend on how each accessory connects; do not assume every Matter device uses Wi-Fi.
If only one accessory or one manufacturer’s devices are affected, prioritize the affected maker’s app and instructions, the accessory itself, and its relevant hub or bridge instead of treating the issue as a home-wide outage.

Remove, reset, and add the accessory again
If the accessory remains unresponsive after the lower-risk checks, removing it from the home app and setting it up again may help. This changes its pairing state, so leave it until after the restart and connectivity checks.
- Remove the unresponsive accessory from the home app. If removal is unavailable there, Apple says to try the manufacturer’s app.
- Follow the manufacturer’s exact instructions to reset that model. Button combinations and reset behavior vary, so do not substitute a generic sequence.
- Add the accessory to the home again using the platform’s setup flow. If setup continues to fail, Google’s guidance says a factory reset may be needed; follow the device maker’s procedure.
Apple’s instruction is: “After you’ve removed the accessories, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reset them and add them to the Home app again.”

On iOS, Apple documents an additional control path at Settings > General > Matter Accessories for managing Matter accessories, deleting pairings, and factory-resetting them. This is an iOS path, not a universal menu on other platforms.

- The accessory cannot be seen or operated in its own app.
- You cannot identify the correct reset procedure for the exact model.
- It still will not complete setup after restarting and retrying.
Google advises contacting the manufacturer if Matter setup remains unsuccessful, and Apple also recommends manufacturer support when its troubleshooting has not restored service. Have the accessory’s brand and model, the home platform, and any message shown during setup available when you contact support.
