To record your screen while appearing over a replaced background, add your screen and webcam as separate sources in an OBS Studio scene, place the webcam above the screen capture, then apply the Chroma Key filter to the webcam source. Check your audio and recording settings, and make a short test recording before you begin.
What you need
- OBS Studio for capturing the screen and recording the finished scene.
- A camera, such as a webcam, to capture you in front of the colored background.
- A solid-colored background for the camera shot. A dedicated green-screen backdrop is optional; OBS provides the Chroma Key filter in its camera-source workflow.
- A microphone if you want to narrate. Check that OBS is receiving the intended microphone audio before recording.
The camera image and screen capture are independent sources. The Chroma Key filter removes the selected color from the camera image so the screen capture shows through behind you.

Set up the scene and screen capture
- Open OBS Studio. If you need help choosing a starting configuration, run the Auto-Configuration Wizard; OBS says it takes your intended use and computer resources into account.
- Create a scene. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for this recording.
- Add the screen source. In the Sources panel, click the add (+) control and choose the source that matches what you want to show and your operating system:
- Windows or Linux, full desktop: Display Capture.
- Windows or Linux, one app: Window Capture.
- macOS: macOS Screen Capture.
- Select the display or window in the source properties and confirm that it appears in the preview. The exact available options can vary by operating system and OBS version.
Choose full desktop or one application
Use Display Capture when viewers need to see activity across your desktop. Use Window Capture when the recording should focus on one application. If you choose a window, check the preview before recording and make sure the app content is visible.

- In the Sources panel, click (+) and choose Video Capture Device.
- Create or select the camera device, then confirm you can see its image in the OBS preview.
- Move the camera source above the screen-capture source in the Sources list. Higher sources appear on top of lower sources.
- Resize and reposition the camera image in the preview. A smaller corner overlay leaves more of the captured screen visible; a larger camera image gives the presenter more prominence.
If the camera covers important screen content, adjust its size or position before recording. You can also select the camera source and use the preview handles to change its dimensions.

Apply Chroma Key to the camera
- In Sources, right-click the Video Capture Device source and choose Filters.
- In the effect-filters area, add Chroma Key.
- Check the preview. Adjust the filter settings if needed so the colored background is removed while you remain visible.
- Close the Filters window and review the composite in the main OBS preview.
Apply the filter to the source that contains the colored backdrop—the camera—not to the screen-capture source. There is no single filter value that suits every camera, backdrop, and lighting condition, so judge the result in your own preview rather than copying a universal setting.
Check audio, output, and recording quality
Verify audio independently
Watch the Audio Mixer while speaking and while any desktop sound you want is playing. Confirm that the expected meters respond. OBS may use desktop audio and microphone capture by default; if the wrong devices are selected or a meter does not respond, open Settings → Audio and choose the intended devices manually.

Set output for the recording
Open Settings → Output and review the recording options before the session. Choose a resolution and frame rate appropriate for the content and your computer. Higher frame rates such as 60 fps can be more demanding than 30 fps, so do not assume the highest setting is best for every machine or recording.

Click Start Recording, capture a short sample, then stop and play it back. Check that the screen is legible, the camera key looks acceptable, the microphone and desktop audio are right, and playback is smooth. OBS recommends a test of a few minutes to catch issues before a real recording.

Common problems and fixes
- The green background remains visible: Confirm Chroma Key is applied to the Video Capture Device source, then adjust its settings while watching the preview.
- The screen is hidden behind the camera: Move the camera source above the screen source, then resize or reposition the camera overlay.
- The wrong screen or app appears: Reopen the screen source properties and select the intended display or window. Confirm the result in the preview.
- Your microphone or desktop sound is missing: Check the Audio Mixer meters, then select the intended input or output in Settings → Audio.
- The recording stutters or the computer struggles: Try a less demanding output resolution or frame rate, then make another short test. OBS notes that 60 fps can require more resources than 30 fps.
- The result looks different from the preview: Play the test file back and review the recording settings in Settings → Output before the next take.
Optional gear
A dedicated green-screen backdrop can help provide a solid colored background, but it is not required by OBS itself. A webcam supplies the presenter image, and soft video lights are another optional equipment category to consider. OBS includes Chroma Key as part of the camera-source workflow, so a separate keying application is not a prerequisite.
