On mobile, Remix > Edit into a Short is a quicker option for eligible public videos you uploaded, but it lets you select up to 60 seconds of source footage.
Choose the clipping method that fits your video

If you are clipping someone else’s video, use YouTube’s remix tools only when they are available for that source. Those tools are different from downloading and re-uploading someone else’s footage.

Clip your video in YouTube Studio on a computer
- Open YouTube Studio and select Content > Videos.
- Select the long-form video you want to turn into a Short.
- In the left menu, open Clips and Shorts.
- Select Create clip or Short, then choose Short.
- Choose the moment to use. You can select transcript text and confirm it, or enter start and end timestamps in the timeline editor. If an AI-powered suggestion is offered, you can select it and adjust its start and end points.
- Review the selection, create a draft, then finish the Short’s upload details.
AI-powered suggestions and outlines are not available to every creator. YouTube lists availability in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and in English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. The controls may not appear if your location or language is outside those lists.
Make a Short from your own video on mobile
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for your video.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds of the source video, then continue to the Shorts tools.
- Add any creative touches you want, such as text or filters, and upload the Short.
YouTube limits this route to long-form public videos uploaded by you. It will not work for a private or unlisted upload, or for a video with a third-party copyright claim. Shorts sampling must also be allowed for the video; if the option is missing, check the video’s sampling setting in YouTube Studio. Shorts made this way link back to the original video, which YouTube says can help new viewers discover it.

One limitation: YouTube says you cannot use Audio Library music or other sounds on Shorts created from your own videos through Edit into a Short.
Use YouTube remix tools for someone else’s video
For an eligible video or Short, open its watch page in the YouTube mobile app, tap Remix, and choose an available option. YouTube’s tools include Cut, Green Screen, Collab, and Use this sound. The options shown depend on the source and the app interface.

Remix access can depend on the video’s privacy settings, copyright claims, creator settings, and music licenses. A creator may later delete the source or restrict remixing, which can affect your use of it. See YouTube Help: Create YouTube Shorts with remixed content for the platform’s guidance.

Remixing is not the same as re-uploading
Downloading another person’s video and uploading an excerpt outside YouTube’s remix tools is not made safe just by giving credit or using a short section. YouTube warns that copyright-protected material in a Short created outside its tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed following a valid copyright takedown request. Get permission or use material you have the rights to use.

Pick a segment that works as a Short
- Choose a complete moment. Look for a single useful, funny, surprising, or satisfying beat that makes sense on its own.
- Keep the opening clear. Start before the key action or statement, rather than cutting off the context a viewer needs.
- Check the ending. Preview the last seconds so the clip does not stop mid-sentence or before the payoff.
- Check the frame. Keep the main subject visible in a square or vertical crop, especially if the original video is horizontal.
- Review the result before publishing. Confirm the clip says what you intend and that any included material is cleared for use.
These are practical editing suggestions, not additional YouTube requirements or guarantees of performance.
Upload a Short from a computer
YouTube’s computer-upload guidance says a Short can be up to three minutes long and must have a square or vertical aspect ratio. Why “Edit into a Short” may be missing
- The video is not your own upload: this feature is for videos uploaded by you. For someone else’s content, check whether a Remix option is available instead.
- The source is private or unlisted: the mobile feature requires your long-form video to be public.
- The video has a third-party copyright claim: YouTube does not allow this route for a video with such a claim.
- Shorts sampling is disabled: check the video’s Shorts sampling setting in YouTube Studio.
