That is the fastest built-in method for a short clip. Use Clipchamp when you need microphone narration, webcam video, trimming, or an MP4 export; use OBS Studio when you need multiple sources or more detailed audio control. Windows 10 users should go straight to Clipchamp or OBS because Snipping Tool video recording is a Windows 11 feature.
Pick the right recorder first
Your Windows version and the type of video you want determine the best route. Snipping Tool is designed for a quick rectangular screen capture. Clipchamp combines recording with editing and can include your camera and microphone. OBS Studio is more configurable, but it takes longer to set up.

| Tool | Best for | Capture choices | Audio and editing | Windows notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Snipping Tool | A fast clip of part of the screen | Rectangular selection | Review and save/share in the app; audio controls vary by build and are not identical on every Windows 11 installation | Video recording is documented for Windows 11 |
| Clipchamp | Narrated tutorials, webcam presentations, and edited exports | Screen, screen plus camera, browser tab, window, or entire screen, depending on the workflow | Microphone narration, browser-tab audio in the documented personal flow, trimming, splitting, and MP4 export | Personal and work/school experiences have different controls; Windows 10 and Windows 11 workflows are available |
| OBS Studio | Multi-source recordings and detailed audio routing | Configurable scenes and sources, including window or game capture | Advanced source and mixer controls; application-audio support depends on OBS and Windows versions | Official application-audio guidance covers Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11 |
If you only need to demonstrate a setting or send a short bug report, start with Snipping Tool. Choose Clipchamp for a finished lesson or presentation. Choose OBS when you need separate audio sources, persistent scenes, or a setup you can reuse for many recordings.
Record a selected area with Snipping Tool on Windows 11
Microsoft introduced the built-in Snipping Tool screen recorder for Windows 11 devices in 2023. The feature is delivered through the Snipping Tool app, so its exact controls can depend on your installed Windows and app build.

Before you start
- Confirm that the computer is running Windows 11.
- Install pending Windows and Microsoft Store app updates if Snipping Tool is missing or the video option does not appear.
- Close private windows, password managers, notifications, or unrelated documents that could appear in the recording.
- Decide whether a rectangular portion of one display is sufficient. Snipping Tool’s documented video workflow is based on selecting a rectangle.
Use the keyboard shortcut
- Press Windows+Shift+R. Windows should open the Snipping Tool video-capture overlay.
- Drag over the rectangular part of the screen you want to record. Include the complete application area, toolbar, or dialog that viewers must see.
- Start the recording from the overlay controls.
- Perform the actions you want to demonstrate. Keep the pointer movement deliberate and pause briefly after each important change.
- Stop the recording from the overlay. Snipping Tool opens the resulting video clip for review.
- Use the available save or share controls to keep the clip in the format and location you need.
Open Snipping Tool from Start instead
- Open Start and search for Snipping Tool.
- Launch the app and choose Record.
- Select New, then drag the rectangle around the area to capture.
- Start, stop, review, and save the video using the app’s controls.
What to expect from Snipping Tool audio
The Microsoft help workflow establishes recording a selected screen area, but it does not state that every Windows 11 build exposes the same microphone or system-audio controls. Do not assume that a Snipping Tool clip includes computer sound or narration. If spoken explanation or application audio is essential, make a short test clip first. If the needed audio option is absent, switch to Clipchamp or OBS rather than trying to force Snipping Tool to behave like a full production recorder.
If Windows+Shift+R does nothing
Search for Snipping Tool manually and check whether Record is available. Install Windows and Snipping Tool updates, then try again. A missing video recorder generally means the installation or app build does not expose the feature. Windows 10 users should not expect this exact shortcut and workflow; use one of the alternatives below.
Record and edit with Clipchamp
Clipchamp is the practical choice when the recording needs narration, a camera feed, or editing before delivery. Microsoft documents separate personal-account and work/school-account experiences, so labels and sharing options can differ.
Personal account: screen or screen plus camera
- Open Clipchamp and create or open a project.
- Choose Record & create.
- Select Screen for a screen-only recording, or Screen & camera to show your webcam while you explain the content.
- When prompted, allow the browser or app to use the microphone and camera you selected. If you deny a permission, the corresponding track will not be recorded.
- Choose the microphone for narration. If you use a USB microphone, connect it before opening the recorder and select it explicitly; a separate microphone is optional when the computer’s built-in microphone is adequate.
- Choose what to share: a browser tab, a window, or the entire screen. Share only the smallest surface that contains the material viewers need.
- Start the capture, deliver the demonstration, and stop when finished.
- Preview the result. Retake it if the wrong source, microphone, or camera was selected.
Browser-tab audio has a specific workflow
In the documented personal recorder, sharing a browser tab lets you enable audio sharing for that tab. Select the tab and turn on the audio-sharing option before recording if viewers must hear a video, web application, or other sound produced in that tab. This behavior should not be generalized to every Clipchamp source: a window or entire-screen capture may present different audio choices. Make a short test whenever computer sound matters.

Ideal for podcasting, streaming, ASMR, voice-overs, singing, and professional multi-platform recording.
The Clipchamp Windows app limits browser-tab recording to Microsoft Edge tabs. To record a Chrome tab, use Clipchamp in Chrome rather than assuming the Windows app can capture it. This limitation applies to the tab-recording workflow, not to every possible screen or window capture.
Review, edit, and export
- Preview the captured clip in your project timeline.
- Use trimming to remove dead time at the beginning or end.
- Split the clip where you need to remove a mistake or rearrange sections.
- Check that the camera box, narration, and screen remain synchronized.
- Export the edited project as an MP4 using the available export controls.
Recordings can be retaken before editing, which is often faster than trying to repair a clip that used the wrong microphone or shared the wrong window. Keep the original project until you have checked the exported MP4 from start to finish.
Work or school account
Microsoft documents a separate Clipchamp recorder for work and school accounts. The workflow can offer screen, window, or browser-tab selection and an option to include system audio. Depending on your organization’s account, licensing, and policies, a completed recording can upload to Microsoft 365 and provide sharing features. Those controls are not guaranteed for every personal account, and an administrator may restrict them.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you do not see the work recorder or its sharing controls, verify that you are signed in with the intended organizational account and ask your administrator whether the feature is enabled. Do not treat the presence of a Microsoft 365 subscription as proof that every Clipchamp capability is available in your tenant.

Use OBS Studio for configurable capture
OBS Studio is a third-party recorder for people who need reusable scenes, several sources, or detailed audio routing. It is more configurable than Snipping Tool, which also means more setup decisions and more opportunities to select the wrong source.
Install and create a basic scene
- Download OBS Studio using the project’s official Windows installation guidance.
- Run the installer and open OBS.
- Accept the automatic configuration prompts as a starting point, then create a scene for the recording.
- Add the source that matches the content: a window capture for one application, a display capture for a monitor, or another source appropriate to your demonstration.
- Check the preview. Resize or crop the source so private desktop areas and unrelated windows are not visible.
- Check the audio meters before recording. Speak briefly and play the application sound you intend to capture.
- Start recording, perform the demonstration, and stop recording from OBS.
Application audio version requirements
OBS Studio 28 and later supports per-application audio sources on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, according to the project’s application-audio guidance. The instructions also describe adding audio to Window Capture or Game Capture in OBS 30.1. These controls are therefore version-sensitive; do not assume that an older OBS release or an older Windows 10 installation has the same menus.
Open the properties for the relevant capture source and look for the documented application-audio option in your version. If it is unavailable, update OBS where your organization’s policy allows, verify the Windows version, or use a different audio source arrangement. Record a short test and play it back before making a long tutorial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen OBS is worth the extra setup
- You need separate volume control for narration and application sound.
- You want a scene that combines a window, webcam, still image, and multiple audio sources.
- You plan to make recurring recordings and want the same layout each time.
- You need more control than a single rectangular snip or a one-time Clipchamp project provides.
For a one-off screen explanation, OBS’s additional configuration may be unnecessary. Its advantage is control, not a guaranteed improvement in image or audio quality under every setup.

Get narration and system sound right
Microphone narration
A built-in microphone is sufficient if your voice is clear and the room is quiet. A USB microphone can be useful for narrated tutorials, but no extra hardware is required by Clipchamp’s documented workflow. Connect and select the microphone before you begin, then listen to a test recording with headphones. If the meter moves but playback is silent, check that the correct input was selected and that the clip’s audio track is not muted.
Computer or tab audio
System audio is not uniform across these tools. Snipping Tool’s documented help does not promise identical audio controls on every Windows 11 build. Clipchamp personal documents audio sharing for a selected browser tab, while the work experience can offer system-audio inclusion. OBS can provide application-audio sources when the stated OBS and Windows requirements are met. Always test the exact source type you will use: a browser tab, a window, and a whole display are not interchangeable.
Permissions
Clipchamp may request browser or app permission for the microphone and camera. Grant only the permissions required for the recording, and revisit the browser or Windows privacy settings if the device does not appear. Permission troubleshooting is separate from choosing the correct source; a microphone can be allowed but still not selected as the active input.
Recommended Free Tools
Prevent avoidable recording mistakes
- Choose the smallest useful area. A focused rectangle or window keeps passwords, messages, and unrelated work out of the video.
- Prepare the demonstration. Open the application, document, or website before pressing record so the first seconds do not show setup clutter.
- Disable interruptions. Turn on an appropriate notification-suppression mode and close private chats before capturing the desktop.
- Use a deliberate pointer. Move slowly, pause after clicks, and avoid rapidly switching windows.
- Test the complete signal path. A moving audio meter proves that input is detected, not that the exported video contains audible sound.
- Leave space for editing. Pause briefly before speaking and after finishing an action; those gaps make trimming easier.
- Review the export. Watch the MP4 or saved clip at the intended playback volume before sending it to anyone.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The video recorder is missing
On Windows 11, open Snipping Tool from Start and look for Record. If it is absent, install pending Windows and Snipping Tool updates. If the feature still does not appear, use Clipchamp or OBS. On Windows 10, skip the Snipping Tool shortcut and use one of those alternatives.

The recording contains the screen but no voice
In Clipchamp, confirm microphone permission and the selected input, then make another short test. In OBS, check the microphone source and its meter, and verify that the track is not muted. Snipping Tool may not expose narration controls in your build, so use Clipchamp or OBS when voice is required.
The recording contains your voice but not application sound
For Clipchamp personal, select a browser tab and enable its documented audio-sharing option; do not expect the same control for every capture type. For Clipchamp work, check the system-audio option if your organization provides it. In OBS, verify that your release supports application audio on your Windows version and that the capture source has the audio option enabled.
Clipchamp cannot access the camera or microphone
Allow the requested browser or app permissions, close another program that may be holding the device, and reopen the recorder. Then select the intended device explicitly. If you are using the Windows app to capture a Chrome tab, switch to Clipchamp in Chrome; the Windows app’s documented browser-tab limitation applies to Microsoft Edge tabs.

OBS records the wrong window
Stop recording, open the source properties, and select the exact application window again. Check the preview for private content before restarting. If the application-audio option is absent, verify the OBS release and Windows 10/11 requirement for that feature rather than assuming the source is configured correctly.
The finished file is too long or contains mistakes
Use Clipchamp’s trim and split tools when you need a simple edit. With Snipping Tool, record a new, shorter clip if the unwanted material is at the edges. OBS is best used with a planned scene and a clean retake when a complex recording contains a major error.
Quick Recap
A practical preflight checklist
- Identify the Windows version and choose Snipping Tool, Clipchamp, or OBS accordingly.
- Decide whether you need a rectangle, window, tab, full display, camera, microphone, or application audio.
- Close confidential material and silence notifications.
- Select the correct microphone and camera, then grant only the required permissions.
- Make a 10- to 20-second test using the same source type as the final recording.
- Play the test back and confirm the picture, voice, computer sound, and cursor behavior.
- Record the final demonstration, stop cleanly, and review the saved or exported file before sharing.
