1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix a GST return error by first identifying the exact form, tax period, invoice, portal status and error message. Then reconcile the portal record with the invoice and books before changing anything. A draft GSTR-1 can be edited or deleted; a filed GSTR-1 may be corrected through the optional, one-time GSTR-1A facility before that period’s GSTR-3B; older-period corrections must fit the applicable time limit; and a purchase mismatch in GSTR-2B usually requires supplier-side correction. Technical upload and summary problems follow the GST Portal’s error-report and known-issues workflow.
This guide applies to Indian GST-registered businesses and finance teams. Portal labels, deadlines and legal rules can change, so verify the live GST Portal instructions and the law applicable to your tax period. Procedural portal guidance does not replace case-specific advice from a qualified tax professional.

Diagnose the error before editing a return
Do not start by re-uploading a file or changing tax values. Capture the complete problem first. The same symptom—such as an invoice missing from a summary—can result from a data validation error, a pending record, a supplier omission, a portal processing delay or an already-filed return that needs a different correction route.
- Identify the form: GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, GSTR-2B or GSTR-3B.
- Record the tax period: note the month or quarter and the financial year, including whether the invoice belongs to an earlier year.
- Record the invoice: capture the invoice or debit/credit-note number, date, supplier or recipient GSTIN, taxable value and tax amounts.
- Copy the exact portal message: include any error code, upload status or wording such as “processed with error,” “pending” or “data mismatch.”
- Check filing status: establish whether the return is still a draft, has been submitted, or has been filed.
- Download evidence: if the portal generated an error report, save it before making another attempt.
The GST Portal’s filing guidance distinguishes draft preparation, summary generation, final review and filing. Its technical guidance directs users with processed-with-error uploads to download the report, correct the identified issues and upload fresh corrected JSON. Keeping the original invoice, books entry, uploaded file, error report and screenshots together prevents a technical symptom from being mistaken for a tax-data problem.

Reconcile the invoice record line by line
Compare the portal record with the source invoice and accounting records before deciding which field to change. A return can appear to “match” on the invoice number while still differing in a tax head, place of supply or recipient identifier.
| Field to compare | What to verify | Why a difference matters |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier and recipient GSTIN | Check every character against the registration details used for the transaction. | A wrong GSTIN can place the supply in the wrong taxpayer’s records and prevent the intended recipient from seeing it in statement data. |
| Invoice or note number | Compare spelling, punctuation, sequence and the financial year in which it was reported. | The portal says an invoice number can be added only once per financial year; an existing record may need amendment rather than a second addition. |
| Invoice date | Confirm the date on the issued document and the period in which it was reported. | A period error can affect amendment availability and the recipient’s statement period. |
| Place of supply | Match the state or other place-of-supply information on the invoice and books. | It can change the tax treatment and the tax heads reported. |
| Taxable value | Check whether discounts, adjustments or line-item totals were included consistently. | A value mismatch changes the tax calculation and the return summary. |
| Tax rate and tax heads | Compare the rate and the split between applicable tax components. | An incorrect head or rate can create validation failures or an incorrect liability. |
| Credit/debit-note relationship | Confirm that the note is linked to the correct original invoice and carries the right values. | An unlinked or wrongly linked note can leave the invoice and return totals inconsistent. |
Also check whether the supplier has already amended the document or issued a credit/debit note. On the purchase side, a difference may be legitimate because the supplier’s later filing changed the amount shown in GSTR-2B.
Correct a GSTR-1 that is still a draft
If GSTR-1 has not been filed, the normal remedy is to correct the draft record rather than create a duplicate invoice. The GST Portal permits draft invoices to be edited or deleted before filing.

Online correction
- Open the relevant GSTR-1 preparation area for the affected tax period.
- Go to the invoice, debit-note or credit-note table where the record was entered.
- Open the existing record and compare each field with the source invoice and books.
- Edit incorrect identifiers, date, place of supply, taxable value, rate, tax heads or note linkage.
- If the record is a duplicate or should not be reported, delete it rather than adding another version.
- Use the portal’s Generate Summary function after the correction.
- Inspect the regenerated figures and the affected record before proceeding to final review and filing.
Generating the summary is not a substitute for checking the invoice. It confirms that the portal has incorporated the current draft data into its totals; it does not establish that the underlying transaction is legally correct.
Offline JSON correction
Businesses using the offline utility should correct the source data, generate a fresh JSON file and upload it instead of repeatedly submitting the file that produced the error. If the upload is marked “processed with error,” download the portal’s error report and address every listed validation issue in the current utility. Preserve the corrected JSON and the report so another team member can see exactly what changed.
When an uploaded invoice is not in the summary
First inspect pending and error records and look for an error file. If the portal’s summary-generation symptom persists, its known-issues guidance advises clearing the browser history and cache, generating the summary again, then refreshing after 15 minutes. If the record is still absent, contact the GST helpdesk with a screenshot and the date and time of the attempt. Do not create a second invoice merely because the first one is temporarily not visible.

Correct a filed GSTR-1 with GSTR-1A
Once the same period’s GSTR-1 has been filed—or its due date has passed—the portal provides GSTR-1A as an optional amendment statement. It can be used once for a tax period, and it must be filed before filing that period’s GSTR-3B. It can correct a previously reported record or add a record omitted from GSTR-1.

- Confirm that the affected tax period’s GSTR-1A facility is available and that the period’s GSTR-3B has not been filed.
- Reconcile the original GSTR-1 record or omitted invoice against the source document and books.
- Enter the amendment or addition in the applicable GSTR-1A section.
- Review the resulting values and the effect on the period’s reported supplies.
- File GSTR-1A once the data is complete; it is optional, but a second GSTR-1A filing for the same period is not available.
- Review the corresponding GSTR-3B figures before filing that return. The GST Portal states that corrected values auto-populate in the supplier’s GSTR-3B.
GSTR-1A timing creates an important recipient-side difference. The GST Portal’s GSTR-2B FAQ says supplies added or amended through GSTR-1A appear in the recipient’s next tax period’s GSTR-2B. Therefore, a supplier may complete a valid correction before filing its GSTR-3B while the recipient sees the corrected data only in the following statement period.
Earlier-period amendments and the 30 November cutoff
For an invoice from an earlier period, use the applicable amendment table only if the correction remains legally permitted. The GST Portal user guide states that correcting or adding prior-financial-year invoices in GSTR-1 is subject to a cutoff of 30 November of the following financial year.

Treat that date as a consequential rule, not as a universal instruction detached from the transaction. Verify the financial year, the tax period, current statutory provisions and any applicable notification before relying on the cutoff. If the date has passed or the transaction has unusual facts, obtain case-specific advice rather than forcing an old invoice into a current return.
Resolve purchase invoices that do not match GSTR-2B
GSTR-2B reflects data filed by suppliers or e-commerce operators. The portal says the statement includes supplies declared and filed through GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, the Invoice Furnishing Facility and specified forms. A purchase-register entry by itself is not proof that the supplier has reported the invoice or that input tax credit is available.

- Export or view the purchase register and the relevant GSTR-2B.
- Match supplier GSTIN, invoice or note number, invoice date, taxable value, tax amounts and place of supply.
- Check whether the supplier filed an amendment or credit/debit note that changed the original amount.
- Classify each difference as missing, duplicated, wrong identifier, wrong amount, timing difference or amendment.
- For a supplier-side omission or error, send the supplier the precise discrepancy and ask it to inspect its filed GSTR-1 or GSTR-1A data and use the applicable correction route.
- Reconcile the next statement after the supplier’s correction rather than treating an assurance or email as a completed fix.
Handle negative credit carefully
The GSTR-2B FAQ addresses cases in which amendments create negative credit. Where that situation applies, follow the specified GSTR-3B table and reverse the amount as directed. Do not change tax-head utilisation by guesswork.
Best Value
Even a perfect statement match does not, by itself, establish input-tax-credit eligibility. Eligibility can depend on statutory conditions and the underlying transaction. Assess those conditions and the rules applicable to the period before claiming or retaining credit.

| Portal symptom | Recommended workflow | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|
| Processed with error | Download the error report, correct every listed issue in the current offline utility, generate fresh JSON and upload it again. | Do not keep uploading the unchanged file. |
| Uploaded records missing from the summary | Check pending and error records, clear browser history/cache, generate the summary, wait 15 minutes and refresh. If unresolved, send the helpdesk a screenshot and date/time. | Do not add a duplicate invoice while the first record may still be pending. |
| Same invoice number cannot be added or amended | Search the financial year’s records and confirm whether the number already exists. The portal allows an invoice number to be added once per financial year and may allow amendment in a later return within the legal time limit. | Do not alter the number merely to bypass a duplicate warning. |
| Invoice is pending | Edit and correct the pending record, or remove the errored record and add it again with corrected details when the portal workflow permits. | Do not assume pending means filed or accepted. |
| Data mismatch or incomplete data | Complete the period’s missing data, validate it again and inspect the resulting summary. | Do not file with known incomplete records. |
| ITC offset error in GSTR-3B | Follow the portal’s ITC utilisation order and the instruction attached to the specific error. | Do not change utilisation between tax heads based on an assumption. |
When a technical issue continues after the documented refresh and re-upload steps, provide the helpdesk with the exact form and period, error text, screenshot, upload or generation time and the relevant error report. Those details allow the portal team to distinguish a validation failure from a processing or display problem.
Choose the correction route by status
| Your situation | Route | Constraint or consequence |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-1 is not filed | Edit or delete the draft invoice, regenerate the summary and review it. | Draft records remain changeable before filing. |
| GSTR-1 filed, same-period GSTR-3B not filed | Consider GSTR-1A for an amendment or omitted record. | Optional, available once per period, and must precede that period’s GSTR-3B; the recipient sees the change in the next GSTR-2B period. |
| Earlier-period invoice | Use the applicable GSTR-1 amendment route if still legally open. | The portal guide states a 30 November following-financial-year cutoff for prior-year correction or addition; verify current law for the period. |
| Purchase-side GSTR-2B mismatch | Reconcile the statement, request supplier correction and assess ITC separately. | Supplier amendments can change the statement and may create negative credit requiring the specified GSTR-3B reversal. |
| Upload or portal-processing problem | Use the error report, correct the offline JSON, regenerate or refresh as directed, then contact the helpdesk if necessary. | Follow the error-specific workflow instead of repeatedly filing or re-uploading. |
Checks to complete before filing again
After correcting data, perform a controlled review rather than relying on the absence of an error message.
- Confirm the form and tax period are the intended ones.
- Verify that every corrected invoice agrees with the source document and books.
- Check that no duplicate invoice number was introduced for the financial year.
- Generate and inspect the updated summary.
- Review tax values by head, place of supply and note linkage.
- For GSTR-1A, confirm that the period’s GSTR-3B has not already been filed and that the one-time facility has not been consumed.
- For GSTR-2B differences, document the supplier contact and continue checking the next statement where a later-period appearance is expected.
- Save the final error report, corrected JSON, summary and screenshots with the period’s reconciliation file.
Prevent repeat mismatches
Use the same reconciliation discipline every filing period. Lock the invoice source used for return preparation, validate GSTINs and invoice numbering before upload, and keep a list of records that are pending, errored, amended or awaiting supplier action. Assign an owner and due date to each unresolved difference. Separating “portal processing,” “supplier reporting” and “tax eligibility” issues keeps a technical fix from being mistaken for a completed compliance decision.
Review the portal’s current instructions before each filing cycle, particularly when correcting a prior financial year, using GSTR-1A or deciding how a negative GSTR-2B credit affects GSTR-3B. If the facts involve disputed liability, restricted credit or a deadline that may have passed, a GST practitioner or chartered accountant can assess the specific transaction and applicable law.
