Choose OBS if you want configurable desktop recording, control over sources and audio, or recordings longer than Loom’s free limit. Choose Loom if you want to quickly record your screen and camera, then share the video through a hosted link. Neither is the universal winner: the better fit depends on how you capture, share, and review recordings.

How to record your screen with OBS
OBS is a desktop recording and streaming application built around scenes and sources. A scene is a collection of the things you want in the composition, such as a display, a specific app window, and audio devices. Start with a short test so you can catch missing video or audio before an important recording.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Follow OBS’s setup prompts and select recording as your intended use. The wizard uses your intended use and hardware to recommend settings; treat the result as a starting point, not a guarantee that every scene will run smoothly. OBS Quick Start Guide
- Add the screen source. In a scene, use the add-source control to add a display capture for the whole screen or a window capture for one app. On macOS, choose the appropriate screen-capture source. Check the preview to confirm the correct display or window is visible.
- Check your audio devices. Speak into the intended microphone and watch its audio meter. If you need computer audio, check the desktop-audio meter as well. OBS’s default audio capture includes desktop audio and microphone, subject to device configuration; select devices manually if the meters do not respond as expected. OBS Quick Start Guide
- Confirm recording output. Review the recording settings before you begin, including where the file will be saved and the selected output settings. If the recording is too demanding for your machine, lower the resolution or frame rate and test again rather than assuming minimum system requirements ensure smooth capture.
- Make and review a short test. Record a few minutes, then play the file back. Check that the intended screen area appears, the microphone is audible, desktop audio is present if needed, and the file is saved where expected. OBS specifically encourages testing before an important stream or recording. OBS Quick Start Guide
Resource use varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, so a setting that works for a simple window may not work equally well for a busy multi-source scene. OBS system requirements

Common problems and what to check
- The OBS preview is black or shows the wrong area: Check that the scene contains the intended display or window capture source, and confirm that the selected display or app window is the one you mean to record.
- OBS records no voice: Check the microphone selection and watch its meter while speaking. If the meter does not move, select the intended input device and repeat the test.
- OBS records no computer sound: Check desktop-audio configuration and its meter. Confirm the playback device and recording setup are the ones you intend to use.
- OBS recording stutters or the computer struggles: Reduce resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or use the wizard’s recommended starting point and test again. The demands depend on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS system requirements
- A Loom recording stops before the explanation is finished: Check whether the Starter five-minute screen-recording limit applies to your account; compare the current plan terms if you need longer recordings. Loom pricing
- A Loom recipient cannot view the video: Reopen the current sharing controls and check that the intended person or audience has access before resending the link.
