To live stream a fitness class on YouTube, first make sure your channel is eligible, then choose the simplest setup that meets your needs: a computer webcam, an eligible phone, or a streaming encoder. Run a private or unlisted test with the instructor moving through representative exercises, check that speech and the full demonstration area are clear, and confirm you have rights to any music you play.
Check YouTube live-stream eligibility
YouTube says live streamers must be at least 16, use a verified channel, and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. These requirements apply before choosing your equipment or setup. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview for current requirements.

Streaming from the YouTube mobile app has additional conditions: at least 50 subscribers, a supported device, and live streaming enabled. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s mobile live-streaming requirements before planning a phone-only class; the mobile subscriber threshold is not a requirement for every streaming method.
Choose a streaming setup
| Setup | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Computer webcam | A straightforward class using a computer’s webcam and microphone. | Simple to start, with less production control than an encoder. |
| Mobile app | A lightweight phone-based class when the channel and device meet YouTube’s mobile requirements. | Convenient, but mobile eligibility and device requirements apply. |
| Encoder | A class using external cameras or microphones, multiple sources, overlays, or more production controls. | Requires more setup, including the YouTube stream URL and stream key. |
Computer webcam
On a computer, open YouTube, select Create and then Go live, and choose the webcam option. Enter the stream details and privacy setting, select the intended camera and microphone, check the preview, and start the stream. See YouTube’s webcam streaming instructions for current screen labels and steps.

Phone
If your channel and phone meet the mobile requirements, use the YouTube app’s live-streaming flow. Set the title and privacy, position the phone securely, and review the preview before going live. A phone may be enough for a simple class, but test whether its camera angle continues to show the full exercise area while you move.
Streaming encoder
An encoder is useful when you need external audio or video equipment, multiple cameras or microphones, overlays, or other production controls. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream, then enter the stream URL and key in the encoder. Select the intended audio and video sources, confirm the encoder preview in Live Control Room, and start the broadcast from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection flow. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.

Prepare and test the class before going live
YouTube’s general live-streaming checklist recommends a full test of connection, framing, audio, and lighting. Apply it to the way you will actually teach: a stationary introduction alone will not show whether your movements take you out of frame or make your voice harder to hear. YouTube also advises: “Test your live stream in an unlisted stream before your go-live date, especially for high-production or high-investment events.” See the Google live-streaming guide and YouTube creator guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Enable streaming early. Verify the channel and enable live streaming before class day. If using a phone, confirm mobile eligibility and allow time for first-time enablement.
- Set the teaching area. Put the camera where the entire area needed for demonstrations remains visible. Record or stream a representative section with steps, stretches, and movements that take you across the space; adjust the position if any part of the demonstration is cropped.
- Check spoken instruction. Listen from a separate device or review a recording. Make sure cues remain understandable while you move and music is playing. YouTube recommends external microphones, but an additional microphone is optional if the built-in one captures clear speech in your test. An external microphone or headset is an upgrade to consider only if the test reveals a problem.
- Check light and connection. Use a private or unlisted test with the same equipment and location planned for class. Look for a stable picture and sufficient light throughout the teaching area.
- Decide how to handle chat. Choose whether chat will be on and, if it is, whether someone can monitor it while you teach. YouTube advises arranging moderators or turning chat off to match the resources available.
- Schedule if useful. Scheduling lets viewers receive reminders and gives you a shareable URL. It is optional; use it when you want to promote the class in advance.
- Run a final check. Confirm privacy, title, description, camera and microphone inputs, preview, and rights for any music or other third-party material. For an encoder, check that you selected the intended stream key.
Choose horizontal, vertical, or dual-format streaming
YouTube supports horizontal and vertical viewing, and its Live Control Room can create both formats when dual-format streaming is enabled. The vertical version is a center crop unless you adjust its layout. YouTube says vertical live streams can appear in the Shorts feed; some features, including clickable chat or description links and live ad placements, are horizontal-only. The vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. Check YouTube’s guidance on dual-format live streams for current availability and controls.

- Capture the moment: With sharp, vibrant 1080p resolution, every video call looks more natural, with better brightness, richer colors, and smoother motion. Whether you’re leading a meeting or catching up with family, they’ll see you exactly as they should.
- Be heard, loud, and clear: No more muffled audio or repeating yourself. With dual built-in microphones, your voice comes through clear, natural, and balanced—so whether you’re speaking softly or laughing out loud, you sound just right.
- Total privacy, in a snap: When you’re not on a call, just slide the built-in privacy shutter closed, and rest easy knowing your camera is completely off.
- Tilt Degree: -20°~10°; Monitor Thickness: 4 mm ~ 40 mm; Maximum Resolution: 1080P; Frame Rate: 30 fps; FOV: 85°
- Connection: USB-A 2.0; Cable Length: 1.8m Integrated Cable; Power Consumption: 5V/1A
- Horizontal: Suits wider viewing surfaces and supports the horizontal-only features YouTube lists.
- Vertical or dual format: Can serve viewers watching vertically, including in the Shorts feed. Test the crop or layout in advance so it does not cut off full-body movement.
For a fitness class, verify the framing in each format you plan to use. A crop that works for a talking head can hide the instructor’s feet, hands, or exercise equipment.

Before playing music, make sure your rights cover its use in a live broadcast and any replay that remains available. YouTube’s live-streaming checklist says to secure rights for third-party content such as music and images, and its creator guidance recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a livestream.

Do not assume a personal music subscription, a short excerpt, or an educational purpose automatically authorizes a broadcast. Platform enforcement depends on the rights involved and YouTube’s processes. For a specific claim or dispute, consult YouTube’s copyright guidance.

| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream. | The channel is unverified, has a recent live-streaming restriction, or—on mobile—does not meet the additional requirements or has not completed enablement. | Check the channel’s eligibility and live-stream status. For a first mobile stream, enable it in advance and allow up to 24 hours. |
| Parts of an exercise are out of frame. | The camera view or vertical center crop is too tight for movement across the teaching area. | Reposition the camera and test representative movements. Review the vertical layout separately if using dual format. |
| Instructions are hard to hear. | The microphone does not capture your voice clearly as you move, or music masks speech. | Listen to a test from another device. Adjust microphone placement or levels; consider an external microphone if the built-in one fails the test. |
| The encoder does not connect. | The stream URL or key is missing, incorrect, or entered in the wrong encoder fields. | Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings, then confirm the preview before starting. |
| A music claim or interruption occurs. | The broadcast includes content for which the necessary rights are not secured, or a rights holder or YouTube process affects the stream. | Use only content cleared for the live stream and replay. Review the relevant YouTube copyright notice and guidance rather than assuming a subscription or short excerpt is sufficient. |
