How to Record With a USB Microphone in REAPER

Select your USB mic in REAPER’s audio-device preferences, enable its inputs, arm a track, choose the mic’s mono input, and record a test take.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To record a USB microphone in REAPER, select the computer’s audio system and microphone in Options > Preferences > Audio > Device, enable the microphone’s inputs, then arm a track and choose the mic’s mono input. Check for input activity, record a short take, and play it back. If you want to hear yourself while recording, use REAPER input monitoring or the microphone/device’s direct monitoring—not both by default.

1. Connect the microphone and check that the computer sees it

Connect the USB microphone and confirm that it appears as an available audio device in your operating system. The exact system control differs by OS, so consult your OS help or the microphone maker’s instructions if the mic is not listed. REAPER cannot record from a device the computer does not make available.

2. Select the audio device in REAPER

Open Options > Preferences > Audio > Device. Choose an audio system and device that work with your operating system and installed drivers. REAPER’s user guide, updated for v7.81, gives the following platform-specific guidance; the application version reported on REAPER’s documentation page was v7.82 on October 4, 2026.

Platform Device setup
Windows Use the USB microphone or audio device’s ASIO driver if one is available. REAPER lists WASAPI or WaveOut as alternatives; WASAPI may require Exclusive mode. The right choice depends on the drivers available on your computer.
macOS Configure or select audio devices in the system’s Audio MIDI Setup utility, then choose the device in REAPER’s Audio > Device preferences.
Linux REAPER lists ALSA, JACK, and PulseAudio as audio systems. The official guide cited here does not establish one Linux-specific USB-microphone setup procedure.

In the device preferences, enable recording inputs and make sure the input range includes the USB microphone. Input enablement is required for recording. If you are unsure about initial audio settings, the REAPER guide suggests 44.1 kHz and a 512-sample block size as starting points—not universal best settings. You can set these in REAPER or, depending on the device, its control software.

3. Set up a track for the microphone

  1. Create a track or select the track you want to record onto.
  2. Click the track’s record-arm button.
  3. Open the track input selector and choose the input corresponding to the USB microphone. For a single mic, choose its mono input. The guide advises: “If you are not sure which option to pick, choose Mono when recording from a single microphone or lead.”
  4. Speak or play into the mic and check for input activity before starting the take.

Arming the track and choosing its input are separate actions: do both. If the input selector does not offer the microphone, revisit the device and input-range settings in preferences.

4. Record and check the take

Start recording, perform a short test, then stop and play it back. Playback confirms whether audio was captured and lets you check that the intended mic input was recorded. REAPER supports audio recording and overdubbing; a visible signal before recording is a useful check, but actual meter behavior can depend on the selected device and configuration.

5. Choose how to monitor yourself

REAPER input monitoring is on by default and can be changed from the record-arm button’s context menu. With software monitoring, the live signal passes through REAPER, so you can monitor through REAPER effects. REAPER describes this capability as monitoring inputs “with or without software FX.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your microphone or audio device supports direct monitoring, you may prefer to turn REAPER input monitoring off and use the device’s monitoring controls instead. Check the device documentation for how to enable direct monitoring. If there is no direct-monitoring option, leave REAPER input monitoring enabled. Which path is appropriate depends on the device; avoid monitoring through both paths unless you want to hear both, since they may not sound aligned.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

If software monitoring feels delayed, a smaller block size is one setting to consider. The guide’s 512-sample starting point is not a latency guarantee, and no single block size works best for every system. Adjust it in REAPER or the device’s control software where supported, balancing responsiveness against reliable audio operation.

Why REAPER is not picking up the microphone

Check the setup in this order:

  1. Operating system: Is the microphone connected and visible to the computer?
  2. REAPER device: In Options > Preferences > Audio > Device, is REAPER using the intended audio system and microphone/device?
  3. Inputs: Are recording inputs enabled, and does the input range include the mic?
  4. Track: Is the track record-armed?
  5. Track input: Is its input selector set to the microphone’s mono input?

If the recording is captured but you cannot hear it live, check whether REAPER input monitoring is enabled and whether direct monitoring is active on the device. For device-specific missing-input, silence, or monitoring problems, consult the official REAPER video tutorials and troubleshooting resources and the microphone maker’s documentation. REAPER’s documentation and supported audio systems can change, so confirm current guidance for your version and operating system in its official user guide and About page.
