The field records who has authority to make decisions at acceptance gates—not necessarily who is on call or will repair an incident.
What “ownership” means in this proposal
Software engineer Anton Brilliantov argues that a verbal agreement about who owns a service is difficult for a new team member to inspect, cannot be checked by a build, and may leave no answerable history. His proposed record places an owner field alongside the service name and team in the declaration from which runtime and deployment details are derived.

In this model, the owner is the person who accepts or refuses decisions at defined transitions. That is a decision-making role, not an automatic assignment to fix every live failure.
Why put the owner in the service declaration?
Brilliantov contrasts the declaration with three other places teams might record ownership. His concern is that each can become disconnected from the deployed service or may describe a different responsibility.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A wiki table can name an owner, but may be separate from the service’s declaration and deployment.
- A ticket assignment identifies who is handling a particular task; it does not necessarily establish who accepts decisions for the service.
- A repository ownership file can describe code-review responsibility, which may not be the same as authority over service-level decisions.
Putting the field in the declaration is meant to make the record part of the service’s inspectable definition. It does not, by itself, prove that the field always matches reality or that the proposed approach performs better than the alternatives.
How the owner field changes
- Edit the declaration: change the owner field where the service and team are declared.
- Review the change: have the proposed change examined rather than relying on an unwritten or verbal handoff.
- Commit it: the committed change leaves a history and a place for discussion about who has decision authority.
Brilliantov’s concise formulation is: “The owner of a service is a field in a declaration, and it changes by a commit.” The commit makes the change discoverable; it cannot guarantee that the organizational change and the declaration update happen at the same time.

What decisions the owner is meant to accept
The essay describes five transitions, with evidence expected at each gate. The listed controls are the author’s proposed practice, not independently demonstrated results.
- Requirements to contract: use measurable non-functional requirements as evidence for the agreement.
- Contract to specification: check compatibility before moving into a detailed specification.
- Specification to execution: rely on an executable specification as work begins.
- Execution to acceptance: use an acceptance command to check whether the work meets its acceptance criteria.
- Acceptance to release: examine build, test, structure, or drift checks before release.
In this framing, “finished, all green” is an assertion, not the evidence itself. The output of the relevant run is what a reviewer can inspect. The owner’s role is to accept or refuse at the transition based on that evidence.

Where the proposal has limits
The declaration can become stale
A personnel or organizational change may take effect before anyone updates and reviews the declaration. The committed record is useful only to the extent that the team keeps it aligned with current decision authority.
A required name can misrepresent collective ownership
If decisions are genuinely collective, a single-person field can falsely imply that one person has authority. Brilliantov argues against using a single-name field in that case. If an empty field is disallowed, someone must agree in writing to take the decision-making role.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Decision authority is not incident response
A declared owner does not answer who will repair a live failure. As Brilliantov puts it: “The field says who decides. It does not say who will fix the thing that is broken right now.” Operational repair and on-call responsibility need to be handled separately if the team needs those answers.

The field may add little in a very small setup
Brilliantov says the field adds little when one person runs one service. He also notes that the service card with owners and commitments is not yet available as a web interface; the described approach is based on a declaration, its resulting deployment, and checks around them.

When this approach fits
The proposal is most relevant when a service has identifiable decision gates and the team wants a reviewable record of who can accept decisions at those gates. Before adopting a single-owner field, establish whether authority is actually individual, decide how declaration updates follow organizational changes, and keep incident response distinct from acceptance ownership.
Useful questions for a team discussion include: Where does the owner of a service live, and what changes it? What did an unowned gate cost? When is a declared owner worse than a standing agreement?
