To review ChatGPT’s memory controls, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. From there, use the options available on your account to inspect remembered information, correct it, or remove it. The key distinction: saved memories, information drawn from chat history, and the chats or files that supplied that information are separate. Turning off a setting—or deleting one chat—does not necessarily remove everything associated with a detail.
Where to find ChatGPT memory settings
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account, this area may show controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. OpenAI says memory controls vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace settings, so one account may not show the same labels or options as another. If you use a managed workspace, its administrator may control availability.

Other privacy controls are under Settings > Data controls, but that is separate from the memory controls in Personalization. OpenAI’s guidance for consumer services describes the two settings areas separately: Data Controls FAQ.
How to see what ChatGPT remembers
Use the memory summary or saved-memory management option if it appears in your settings. You can also ask ChatGPT what it remembers about you. Treat the summary as a review aid, not a complete inventory: OpenAI says it may omit details or sources that Memory can still reference. The Memory in ChatGPT help page explains the available controls and their limits: Memory in ChatGPT.

Where supported, you can correct text in the summary, highlight text and provide a correction, or choose an option such as “Don’t mention this again.” That last option changes future personalization behavior; it does not delete the original information or its source.
How to correct or delete a saved memory
If ChatGPT has a detail wrong or it is out of date, tell it the correction. If your settings provide memory management, you may also be able to edit the summary or a saved memory directly. To remove a saved memory, use the available Manage or Saved memories control and delete the relevant entry. The precise label and workflow depend on the interface available to your account.

Deleting the saved memory removes that separate memory entry, but it does not erase mentions of the detail in earlier chats. If you want the information removed from its source as well, locate and delete the relevant chat and check for other places the information may have come from, such as a Library file or connected app.

| Action | What it affects | What it does not automatically do |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a saved memory | The separate saved-memory entry | Remove mentions from past chats or other sources |
| Delete a chat | The chat from your account view; OpenAI schedules permanent system deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions | Delete a separate saved memory created from that chat |
| Turn off Reference chat history | Schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days | Delete the original chats from your history |
| Turn off Memory | Stops the relevant Memory feature from operating as enabled | Delete past chats or saved memories already stored |
| Choose “Don’t mention this again” | Changes future personalization behavior for the detail | Delete the original source information |
Turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history. If saved memories remain on, chat-history reference can be managed separately. These controls are not substitutes for deleting underlying sources when your goal is comprehensive removal.

How to remove information as completely as possible
- In Settings > Personalization > Memory, delete the saved memory if one exists.
- Find and delete the chat where you shared the information if you also want the conversation removed.
- Check whether the information is present in a Library file or a connected app, and remove it there if appropriate.
- If you want to stop ChatGPT from drawing remembered information from past chats, turn off Reference chat history. OpenAI says deletion of that derived information is scheduled within 30 days; the original chats remain unless you delete them separately.
OpenAI says removal and memory updates may take time to propagate. Logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. These are stated processing periods, not a guarantee that every copy disappears at a precise time; deleted-chat retention also has de-identification and security or legal exceptions.
If you delete a chat, does ChatGPT forget it?
Not necessarily. Saved memories are stored separately from chat history, so deleting the chat where a detail first appeared may leave its saved memory intact. Conversely, deleting the saved memory does not remove the detail from the old conversation. OpenAI’s guidance puts it plainly: “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory.” To address both, check the memory entry and the source chat, along with any relevant files or connected apps.

When you delete a regular chat, it disappears from your account view immediately. OpenAI schedules it for permanent deletion from its systems within 30 days unless it has already been de-identified and disassociated from your account or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations. A deleted chat cannot be restored in ChatGPT or through OpenAI Support. See Deleting and archiving chats in ChatGPT.
How to use ChatGPT without creating or using memory
Start a Temporary Chat and choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before the chat begins. The choice determines whether the temporary conversation may use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. Neither choice creates or updates memories while the conversation remains temporary.
Best Value
- Personalized: The temporary chat may use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins, but does not create or update memories.
- Unpersonalized: The temporary chat does not use those personalization sources and does not create or update memories.
If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat; account personalization and model-improvement settings then apply. OpenAI may keep a copy of a Temporary Chat for safety purposes for up to 30 days. Details are in Temporary chat in ChatGPT.
