To record multiple visual sources in OBS Studio, add each one to a scene, arrange them in the preview, then start recording. OBS saves the scene as one composed video—not a separate video track for every source. If you need independently editable audio, assign audio inputs to separate recording tracks in Advanced Audio Properties and enable those tracks in Output settings.

What “multiple sources” means in OBS

An OBS scene is the layout that appears in your recording. It can combine inputs such as a display, a game, a webcam, a capture device, an image, text, a media file, or audio. The resulting video shows the scene’s visual composition. OBS’s multiple-track workflow is for separate audio tracks; it does not mean each visual source is saved as its own editable video track.

Decide which result you need before setting up:

  • One video with several visuals: add the visual inputs to a scene and position them together.
  • Separate audio for editing: assign audio sources to separate recording tracks as well as configuring the scene.
  • A normal video that plays all audio: keep the audio you want to hear together on track 1; many standard players play only one audio track at a time.

Choose the right source for each input

What you want to capture OBS source to consider Notes
The whole computer display Display Capture Captures the display rather than a single application window.
One application Window Capture Use when you want a particular window rather than the full display.
A game Game Capture OBS documents Game Capture for Windows; source availability and capture options vary by operating system.
A webcam or external video input Video Capture Device A webcam or capture card can be used when appropriate to the input; neither is universally required.
A still image, title, or video file Image, Text, or Media Source Useful for overlays, labels, and media included in the scene.
A microphone or other audio input Audio Input Capture or another relevant audio source Check the mixer meters and track assignments. Avoid capturing the same device both globally and as a scene source without checking for duplicate audio or echo.

For macOS 13 and later, OBS directs users to macOS Screen Capture for display, window, or app capture. Source choices and names can differ across operating systems, so use the source that matches both your input and platform.

Add and arrange multiple sources

  1. Create or select a scene. In the Scenes dock, select an existing scene or add one for this recording.
  2. Add the first input. In the Sources dock, click + and choose the matching source type, such as Display Capture, Window Capture, Game Capture, Video Capture Device, or an audio source. Configure the input in the dialog that appears.
  3. Add each additional input. Repeat the same + process for every visual or audio input you want available in the scene.
  4. Position and size the visuals. Select a source in the preview and drag it to place it; drag its handles to resize it. Arrange, for example, a screen capture as the background and a webcam image in a corner.
  5. Set layer order. In the Sources list, higher sources appear above lower sources and can cover them. Drag sources in the list to reorder them. Use the eye control to hide or show a source without removing it.
  6. Check the audio mixer. Speak into the intended microphone or play the intended sound and confirm the relevant meter responds. Listen for duplicate or echoing audio, especially if a device is selected both in global audio settings and as a scene source.
  7. Make a short test recording. Start recording, test the layout and sound, stop, and play the file. Confirm the intended sources are visible and the audio is present before relying on the setup for a long session.

Record separate audio tracks for editing

Separate audio tracks let an editor adjust sources independently after recording—for example, lowering a microphone without lowering game audio. OBS Project’s Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide describes this workflow for audio; it is not a method for separating visual sources into independent video tracks.

  1. Open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer gear menu, or use the Edit menu.
  2. For each audio source, select the recording track or tracks it should use. Give sources separate tracks if you want independent editing.
  3. Open Settings → Output and enable the recording tracks you assigned. Assigning a source to a track alone is not enough if that track is not enabled for recording.
  4. If the file must play all intended audio in a standard player without editing, make sure all those sources are also routed to track 1. A player may play only one track at a time, so tracks intended as isolated stems may not all be heard together by default.
  5. Record and review a short sample in the editor or player you plan to use. Confirm the expected tracks exist and contain the intended sound.

Common problems and fixes

  • A source is missing from the recording: check that it is added to the active scene and its eye control is enabled. Confirm the correct scene is selected before recording.
  • A webcam or overlay is hidden: move it higher in the Sources list or reposition it in the preview; a source below an opaque source can be covered.
  • The whole display appears instead of one app: replace or reconfigure the capture source to target the window or app rather than the display, where that option is supported.
  • There is echo or doubled audio: check whether the same device is being captured both globally and as a scene source, and remove the duplicate route if unnecessary.
  • The recording has no audio or only some sources are audible: inspect the mixer meters, source routing, and recording-track selections. If you expect a standard player to play everything together, route the needed audio to track 1.
  • You expected separate video files or editable video layers: OBS’s scene recording composes the visual sources into the recorded picture. Its documented multiple-track feature covers audio tracks, not independent video-source tracks.
